Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cornish Reef over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for this stretch. It's a bit of a tale of two halves, with a whole lot of nothing in between.
The week kicks off on Thursday, July 9th, with a pulse of energy. We've got a 4ft west swell rolling in at Cornish Reef, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is light and from the west, straight onshore, but the water's sitting at a balmy 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate at 224. It's a start, but that onshore wind means it's going to be a bit of a messy affair.
The real bright spot, and the only one worth circling on the calendar, is Friday morning, July 10th. The swell drops to 3ft, but it's shifted to a cleaner WNW direction with a solid 11-second period – that's proper groundswell. The wind is a light NNE cross-offshore breeze, and the wave comment says "expect good surf conditions." The combined energy is a moderate 241. This is your window. It'll be small, but those longer-period lines with clean conditions will make for some fun, peeling waves. It's the best we're going to see, so if you can get out, do it.
After that, it's a grim run. From Friday afternoon all the way through to Thursday, July 16th, the swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the energy drops off a cliff. There's a lot of clean wind in there, with some glassy mornings on the 15th and 16th, but with wave heights of 1ft and 1ft, and combined energy readings in the teens and twenties, there's just nothing to surf. It's a long, flat spell.
Then, things get interesting again, but not in a good way. Starting Friday, July 17th, the swell picks up, but it's accompanied by some serious wind. We get a bump of 4ft on Friday the 17th, but it's with a short 6-second period and a strong cross-onshore breeze. The energy climbs to 143, but it's junky.
The real power shows up on Saturday, July 18th, into the following week. By Saturday afternoon, we have a 5ft WNW swell with an 11-second period, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 467. But the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore from the NW, making it lumpy and messy. It gets worse. Sunday, July 19th, sees 6ft of swell with 25 mph winds from the NW. The energy is a whopping 384, but it's a full-on, strong cross-onshore mess. That's strictly for the experts, and even then, it's a battle. The setup is so rough, it's honestly more interesting for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing.
The size sticks around into Monday and Tuesday, but the wind remains onshore, keeping the quality poor. The whole second week is a write-off for quality surfing. Stick to the Friday morning window, and leave the rest.
Rusty.
