The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s happening at Bundoran (Ireland). The water is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, sitting at about 17°. That’s a nice little gift for your hands.
We’ve got a real slow start. There’s nothing worth paddling out for on Sunday the 23rd or Monday the 24th. The swell is tiny, and the wind just isn’t playing ball. You’re looking at a gap of a few days with no real reason to get wet.
Things start to look a bit more promising on Monday morning, the 24th. The swell picks up to 3ft from the WNW, with a nice long period of 11 seconds. That’s groundswell, folks, and it’s got some proper energy behind it (254). The wind is a light offshore from the ESE, which is a major positive. It’ll be clean. Monday afternoon keeps it going: 4ft from the WNW, period still 11 seconds, and the wind goes glassy offshore from the SE. That’s the standout for the whole 16-day window. The quality is there, and the reef should handle that long-period swell well. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but it can get busy sometimes, so keep an eye out for company.
The rest of the forecast is a bit of a write-off, to be honest. Tuesday the 25th kicks up a cross-offshore breeze that’s too strong, and the swell drops off. From there, it’s a long run of poor conditions with onshore winds, rain, and messy seas. Even the bigger swells that pop up later, like the 5ft on Friday the 28th of August, are hammered by onshore winds. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
The only other flicker of hope is on Thursday the 3rd of September. The afternoon session shows a 3ft swell from the west with a period of 8 seconds, and it’s glassy. The energy is moderate (114), but it’s just surfable, nothing special. The wind is light and glassy from the ESE, so it’ll be clean, but it’s a far cry from that Monday.
So, the short story: if you’re free on Monday the 24th of August, get out there. The morning and afternoon are both good, with the afternoon being the pick of the bunch. After that, you’re waiting until the 3rd of September for a very ordinary little window. The long-range stuff after that, like the 6th and 7th of September, looks promising in terms of swell size, but the wind is all wrong every time. It’s frustrating.
