The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Bundoran.
Right now, it’s a pretty quiet start. We’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands. The first sniff of anything worthwhile won't show up until Monday the 27th of July. Before that, we’re looking at a solid week of tiny, onshore slop. The waves are small, the wind is on it, and the energy is weak. It’s a full week of no-go, so don't even bother waxing up until then.
Things start to change on Monday the 27th. The swell picks up from the WNW with a moderate 5ft to 6ft of clean swell. The wind swings light from the SSW, going cross-offshore, which is a game-changer. The water is a balmy 65°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a proper treat. The combined energy climbs to a solid 586, so there’s some proper push behind it. This is your window. Get out there for the Monday afternoon session.
The highlight of the whole 16-day run is Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell bumps up to 7ft from the WNW, still with that clean cross-offshore wind. The period is a nice 10-11 seconds, giving the waves some real shape and power. The energy is cranking at 972, a very strong number. This is a solid, powerful groundswell. For a reef break like Bundoran, that’s a serious session. It's going to be a bit of a handful for beginners – anything over 5ft is getting chunky, and this is over 8ft for the bigger sets, so keep that in mind. Expect some crowds, as it's sometimes busy, but for good reason.
Wednesday the 29th of July still has some clean waves in the morning, with 5ft and light winds, but the energy drops off pretty quick. The wind swings hard onshore by the afternoon, and by Thursday the 30th, it’s blown out with strong winds and rain. The rest of the forecast into early August is a write-off again, with small, messy, onshore conditions.
So, bottom line: don't look at the first week. The standout is Tuesday the 28th of July, with a solid, clean, powerful swell rolling in. Monday the 27th is the runner-up. Get on it while it’s good.
Rusty.
