Alright, let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for Bundoran.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions starting now and lasting through most of the first week, with only a couple of very ordinary windows. The first real standout doesn’t show up until Monday the 13th, which is over a week away. That’s a solid gap of about 9 days with nothing worth getting excited about.
For the first few days, from Thursday the 2nd through to Sunday the 12th, the story is mostly messy wind from the west and southwest, making a cross-onshore chop. Swell heights bounce between 2 ft and 6 ft, but the wind just ruins it. The water temperature at the start is sitting at 63°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s really unusual, so you might get away with a thinner wetsuit, but you’ll still be battling the chop.
There are a couple of moments where it cleans up a bit. Friday morning the 3rd has a south wind going cross-offshore with 3 ft swell from the west at 10 seconds, and the combined energy is low at 183 – it’s surfable but very ordinary. Wednesday morning the 8th, we get a glassy morning with no wind, 3 ft west swell at 9 seconds (139 combined energy), but again, not much push. Thursday morning the 9th is glassy too, with 3 ft west swell (122 combined energy), but still small.
Friday the 10th shows a bit of life – an ESE wind giving cross-offshore conditions in the morning, 3 ft west-northwest swell at 11 seconds (198 combined energy), and then the afternoon goes clean with an offshore breeze. That low period (8 seconds) on Saturday the 11th drops the energy to 86, so it’s not doing much.
Now, the one that catches my eye is Monday the 13th. That morning is looking proper. We’ve got an easterly wind blowing cross-offshore, and the swell jumps to 5 ft from the west with a period of 13 seconds. That’s groundswell, and the combined energy hits 649 – that’s a serious boost in power. The surf will be clean and should have some decent shape. This is the best on offer over the whole 16 days, no question. The afternoon drops off with a cross-on wind, so hit it early.
After that, the rest of the second week trails off into smaller, weaker swell with occasional glassy windows, but nothing else worth jumping for. Crowds at Bundoran can be an issue sometimes, so if you’re heading out on Monday the 13th morning, expect some company.
That’s the long and short of it. Keep an eye on the Monday the 13th – that’s the one to aim for.
