Table - best surf conditions forecast for Bundoran over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Bundoran.
Straight up, I’ve got to be honest with you. This outlook is a tough one to swallow. For the next week and a bit, it’s a total flat spell. From Saturday the 11th right through to Monday the 20th of July, there’s just nothing doing. We’re looking at tiny, weak leftovers, most of them under 1 feet and with combined wave energy barely getting into double digits. You’d be floating out there, not surfing. There’s a bit of a spark on the 13th with a long-period 13 second swell, but it’s only 0.7 feet, so that’s a tease, not a wave. The water temp right now is around the seasonal average, so nothing weird going on there.
Then, late on Monday the 20th, things start to change. We’ve got a pulse of swell pushing in from the WNW. By Tuesday the 21st, it’s building to 5 – 5 feet with an 8-second period. Problem is, the wind is going to be a mess. We’re looking at strong cross and cross-onshore winds, 12 to 18 mph, which is going to chop it right up. The combined energy is climbing to a moderate 270–301, but the conditions will be lumpy and hard work. This is a spot where a reef break doesn't handle that kind of chop well.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July. That’s the biggest we see, with 5 feet of WNW swell (combined energy of 415). But again, it’s hammered by a fresh 18 mph cross-onshore wind, making it lumpy and poor. This is borderline too big for beginners at 5 feet, but with the wind and chop, it’s really only for the experienced lot who don’t mind a wrestle. Honestly, if you’re into kite surfing, this stretch from the 20th to the 22nd might be more your thing, because paddle surfing is going to be a battle.
After that peak, it drops back down through the rest of the week, with onshore winds sticking around, keeping things messy. There’s a brief chance on the morning of Sunday the 26th of July when a light offshore wind from the SE (6 mph) and some clean conditions appear on the charts, but the swell is only 0.7 feet. A total non-event.
Bottom line: there is no good surf in this 16-day window. The forecast can change, but right now, it’s a long stretch of tiny waves and blown-out lumps. Keep your board in the car, but don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
