The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us around Bundoran.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the start of this period is a bit of a dud. We’re looking at a stretch from Saturday the 22nd right through to about Friday the 28th of August where the surf is just plain poor. There’s a bit of energy, but the wind’s all wrong. We’ve got a run of cross-onshore and onshore winds that are just chopping everything up. You’d be fighting a losing battle out there.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Monday the 24th. We’ve got a small pulse of swell coming in at around 3ft from the WNW, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a proper bit of groundswell energy, with moderate energy readings (254). The wind is looking good too – cross-offshore in the morning and clean offshore in the afternoon. The water is sitting at a balmy 62°, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, so you can leave the thick winter steamer at home.
After that Monday, it goes quiet again. Tuesday the 25th through to Monday the 31st of August is a write-off. The winds are onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is either tiny or messy. Tuesday the 1st of September is more of the same – a small, choppy mess.
Now, hold onto your boards, because things get seriously interesting from Wednesday the 2nd of September. The models are starting to flash some serious potential. Wednesday morning brings a 5ft west swell with a period of 9 seconds and a solid 445 energy reading, but the wind is cross-shore, making it a bit tricky. By Wednesday afternoon, the swell bumps up to 6ft from the west with a 10-second period and a strong 650 energy. It’s still a bit cross-onshore, though, so keep your eye on that.
The absolute standout, the one you want to circle on your calendar, is Thursday the 3rd of September. We are looking at a beauty of a day. Thursday morning starts with a 6ft west swell, 10-second period, and clean with cross-offshore winds from the ESE. The energy is pumping at 694. Then Thursday afternoon… wow. Glassy conditions with a 8ft west swell and an 11-second period. The combined energy is a massive 1253 – that’s proper power. This is expert territory for sure; that’s a solid, powerful wave. For the experienced crew, this is going to be firing.
Friday the 4th keeps the momentum going. A clean 7ft west swell with a long 12-second period and offshore ESE winds in the morning. The energy is a staggering 1290. That’s a long-period groundswell, which will be wrapping nicely around the point. It’s still big, so it’s for the confident surfer only. The afternoon gets a bit trickier with a cross-offshore breeze picking up, but the morning session will be one to remember.
Heading into the weekend of the 5th and 6th of September, the swell drops back a touch to around 5ft to 6ft, with good offshore winds on Saturday, but the energy is still moderate to strong. A decent option if you missed the big stuff.
So, to sum it up: be patient through this week and next. The real magic is waiting for you on Thursday the 3rd of September at Bundoran. That’s the session. Glassy conditions, a powerful 8ft groundswell from the west, and that reef will be working perfectly. Get your board ready.
Rusty.
