Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, it's Rusty here, and I've taken a good, long look at what Bundoran has to offer over the next couple of weeks, and I'll be honest with you – it's a bit of a mixed bag. The immediate outlook is pretty grim, but there's a tiny glimmer of hope mid-week if you're willing to get up early.
The wave energy is looking weak across the entire period, with most values coming in under 100, and for the next few days we're dealing with some proper onshore junk.
Right now, Monday the 6th and on into Tuesday the 7th, it's a write-off. We've got a messy 4 ft to 4 ft swell coming from the west, but with a solid 12 mph cross-on wind out of the west and southwest, it's just choppy and blown out. The combined energy is only 161, which is weak. Honestly, not worth paddling out.
Wednesday the 8th is a little better, but still no good. The swell drops a bit to 3 ft - 3 ft from the west, but we've got light cross-shore winds. It’s still a poor setup, so you're better off doing something else.
Now, our first real chance comes early on Thursday the 9th. For the Thursday morning session, we get a bit of light cross-offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph, which cleans things up nicely on a weak but surfable 3 ft west swell. The wave energy is only 129 – still weak – but the conditions will be clean. It's a pretty ordinary wave, but if you're desperate for a slide, this is your window. Honestly, though, the afternoon looks to get a bit choppy again as the wind swings west-northwest.
Friday the 10th morning is an interesting one. We've got offshore wind from the northwest at 6 mph, and the swell ticks up a bit – 3 ft from the west with a longer period of 11 seconds. This is a bit more of a groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 231, which is still only moderate. It’s carrying a bit more punch though, but the forecast has some question marks over the tide, so stay on your toes. It’s not a standout, just worth a check.
After that, the surf really drops out. From Saturday the 11th all the way through to the start of the following week, we're looking at tiny waves, mostly under 2 ft. The swell energy is pitiful – we're talking single and double-digit figures. For instance, Saturday morning shows a combined energy of only 110 on a weak 3 ft swell, and it gets worse from there. The winds are light and clean, but there's simply no swell to ride. This flat spell looks set to last for days.
Tuesday the 14th might offer something a bit different. You'll see some clean conditions with cross-offshore east winds, but the swell is still tiny on a 1 ft to 2 ft west swell with a bit more period around 11 seconds. The energy is only 58, so we're still in the weak category. It's not going to set the world on fire, but with a longboard it might just be ridable.
Looking further out, the pattern doesn’t really improve. The rest of the week and into the weekend stays very small. The ocean looks completely flat, with swell heights barely reaching 0.7 ft and combined energy readings in the single digits. There is a small bump of long-period energy showing for Sunday the 19th – a 12-second period from the west, but the swell height is still only 0.7 ft, and the energy is just 18. Not enough for a surf. We also have some very light offshores that morning, which would be lovely if there was any water moving.
So, what's the bottom line? If you're after the absolute best on offer, it’s a toss-up between the clean conditions on Thursday morning the 9th and the interesting pulse with offshore winds on Friday the 10th. No one is a proper standout; we're just looking for the least average options. The long range looks pretty barren for the next week and a half, with a long gap of flat days from the 11th right through until maybe the middle of the third week.
It's a frustrating time for Bundoran, but that's the nature of the beast. The water temperature is notably 63°F, which is about 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – very unusual, almost like a warm summer bath.
Stay tuned, forecasts can change, but for now, keep the board in the car and the expectations low.
Rusty.
