The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I'm looking at a pretty lean run for Bundoran over the next couple of weeks. The good news is there are a couple of clear windows worth paddling out for, but you'll need patience to get through the flat and rubbish spells in between.
Right from the start, it's a quiet scene. The first real surf that's any good doesn't show up until Monday, August 24th. Before that, you're looking at small, messy dribble with onshore winds from the 22nd through to the 24th morning. On Monday morning, things finally switch. The wind goes cross-offshore from the ESE at 9 mph, and a new long-period groundswell pushes in at 3 ft from the WNW. That 11-second period is a proper sign of energy from deep water, and the combined swell energy clocks in at a moderate 254. The water temperature is about average for the time of year. Bundoran is a reef break, so that longer-period groundswell will line up nicely. It's worth getting out for a session then, though be aware that crowds are likely here. The afternoon keeps it clean with 3 ft from the west, 10-second period, and a light offshore breeze from the SE at 6 mph, though the combined swell energy drops a touch to 204.
Tuesday the 25th is okay but a step down. Morning has 3 ft at 10 seconds from the west with a moderate cross-offshore breeze from the ESE at 12 mph. The combined energy is a modest 118, and the wind kicks up enough to make it feel ordinary. The afternoon improves a little with a proper offshore wind at 12 mph and 2 ft waves, but it's marginal.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are a mixed bag. Thursday afternoon looks the best of a bad lot – 4 ft from the WNW, 9-second period, and glassy conditions with only 3 mph wind from the NW. The combined energy is a solid 243, and it cleans right up. That's a good option if you can get out of work.
Friday the 28th is a write-off with onshore wind again. Then Saturday the 29th – this is the standout of the whole run. Morning brings 6 ft from the WNW at 8 seconds, cross-offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph, and a combined swell energy of 344 – that's the strongest reading in the whole 16 days. The afternoon holds at 4 ft with a combined energy of 205, still clean. That Saturday offers the biggest swell and the best conditions. It's over 5 ft, so it's not for beginners, but for intermediates and above, that's the session to circle.
From Sunday the 30th through to the end of the forecast period, it's poor. Sunday the 30th is cross-on and choppy, Monday August 31st has strong onshore winds up to 22 mph and lumpy conditions, and the rest dribbles away into tiny, weak surf with no real recommendation through to September 6th. There's a small bump on September 2nd afternoon with 3 ft at 13 seconds and clean conditions, but the score is poor. September 3rd has surfable but very ordinary conditions.
So, to sum it up: there's a decent run from Monday August 24th through Saturday August 29th, with Saturday the 29th being the clear highlight. Before that and after, there's a lot of flat, windy, and ordinary days. Hang in there.
Rusty.
