The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's look at what's on the table for Bundoran over the next couple of weeks. I'll level with you right now – it’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a long, quiet period ahead before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
The forecast starts off flat as a lake for the first week or so. From Thursday 16th of July through to Thursday 23rd of July, the swell is tiny – we're talking about 0.7 ft to 1 ft waves with weak energy (8 to 54). The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s just not happening. There are a few glassy windows on Thursday 16th, Sunday 19th, and Tuesday 21st mornings, but with almost no swell, they don't mean a thing. You're better off doing something else.
The picture doesn't really improve until Friday 24th of July. We finally see a pulse of swell push in around 3 ft from a W to WNW direction, with moderate energy building to 236. But the wind is a problem – a moderate cross-onshore breeze will chop things up. It’s still “poor surf conditions” across the board, so don’t get your hopes up for that weekend. Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th are a similar story: modest waves in the 3 ft to 3 ft range but the onshore wind keeps the quality low.
Now, here’s the one bright spot in this whole outlook. On Monday 27th of July, things finally click into place for a moment. We get a clean, 3 ft groundswell from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds. The wind goes offshore from the ESE in the morning at 9 mph, and then it goes glassy in the afternoon with light SSE air. The conditions are described as "surfable" and the water is much warmer than normal for the time of year at 64°F.
That Monday morning and afternoon session is your best bet across the entire 16 days. The swell direction is NW, which is exactly what this reef set-up likes to see. It’s a fairly consistent break, but crowds are possible at Bundoran, so get in early if you can. The wave height is small enough for intermediates, but that clean, glassy surface will mean peaky, tidy waves.
For the remainder of the forecast after that, from Tuesday 28th of July through to Friday 31st of July, it drops back into the doldrums. Swells shrink to 1 ft - 3 ft with onshore winds returning, and the energy fades to weak (29 - 98). It's back to poor conditions.
So, honestly, it’s a lean run. The one standout is Monday 27th of July at Bundoran. Mark it in your calendar. Other than that, the first week is a washout, and the end of the second week follows suit.
Rusty.
