The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, giving you the long-range look at what’s on offer for our slab.

We got a rough start, a hopeful middle, and what looks like a proper payoff at the very end of this 16-day run. The first week and a half is basically a write-off with onshore winds slamming Mullaghmore, but don't lose hope yet; it looks like the offshore gods might just show up to save the second half.

Right now, and for the next week or so, we're looking at a cross-onshore mess. From Tuesday the 18th right through to Monday the 24th, it’s a real grind. Fresh westerlies and northerlies are just tearing it up, making everything lumpy and choppy. The swell is all over the place but the energy is weak to moderate and the quality is zilch. This stretch is purely for the hardcore who just want a paddle or for kite surfers to have a blast in the wind. Avoid unless you love punishment.

We finally catch a break late on Monday the 24th of August. A cleaner window opens up as the wind swings cross-off from the south. The swell jumps a bit to 5ft from the west with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy reads 466. The call is marginal – a tide check will be key – but it’s the first sign of life after a long, bleak stretch.

Then we get a taste of the good stuff. From Tuesday the 25th through Thursday the 28th, we see some proper offshore wind spells from the SE and SSE. The waves are small, mostly in the 2ft to 3ft range, but they’ll be glassy smooth. The energy is low, but for a clean, small-wave sesh on an offshore wind day, you could get some clean lines in. It’s not the main event though.

Okay, here is the standout. Saturday the 29th of August is the one to circle. A solid pulse of west swell arrives, pushing 12ft with an 8-second period. Now, 12ft is heavy territory. At a reef like Mullaghmore, this is strictly for the experts. The combined wave energy slams in at 1583, which is serious power. But the wind? Offshore from the ESE, then swinging SE. This is as good as it gets. This is a big, powerful, clean swell at a class reef. The setup will be huge, hollow, and dangerous. It carries into Sunday the 30th with a slightly smaller 6ft to 6ft swell from the WNW under clean offshore winds. That Sunday looks more manageable but still powerful, with energy around 500. Monday the 31st drops off quickly. After that, we get a few more clean but smaller days, and then a final pulse of 8ft swell from the west on Wednesday the 2nd of September, but the wind goes cross-onshore, putting a dampener on it.

So, bottom line: suffer through the first week of slop. The real action is Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August. That's your window for a proper session at Mullaghmore. The size on Saturday is no joke – only for the brave. Sunday looks like the better, more manageable day for experienced surfers looking for clean, powerful waves.

Stay stoked.
Rusty.
