The Lowdown
Right, folks, this one's gonna be a bit of a waiting game. We're looking at the 16-day window for Mullaghmore (Ireland), and honestly, the first week is pretty much a write-off. There's a massive gap in decent surf until we finally get a glimmer of hope later on.
You're looking at a handful of days with zero to tiny, short-period windswell, blown out or just messy. The best of a bad lot in this first week is that moment on Monday, August 24th. The swell ticks up a touch, swinging in from the WNW with a period bumping up to 11 seconds and a combined energy of 313 (moderate). It's still small, around 4ft, but the key here is the wind – it goes offshore, light from the ESE. That's clean surf, but the quality is nothing to write home about. Honestly, it's a bare-minimum surf, not a standout.
That Monday morning window is the only thing close to a go in the first eight or nine days. After that, it fades back into tiny, choppy junk. Then we hit Saturday, August 29th. The swell gets a bit of a push from the W at 5ft, with the combined energy hitting 351 (moderate). However, the wind is a cross-shore breeze at 16 mph from the WSW, making things a bit of a battle. It's not a true standout by any stretch.
But hang onto your hats for the real promise. Sunday, August 30th is our best bet. By the afternoon, the wind drops to a dead calm – absolutely glassy, with the lightest of breezes from the east. The swell direction is NW at 2ft and a period of 10 seconds (combined energy 84 – weak). It's small, but that glassy, clean surface will make the most of whatever is there. This is a sneaky one for the longboard or a fun mid-length.
For the absolute best on offer, I'm calling Monday, August 24th morning as the one to pin your hopes on for a proper wave. It's got the biggest swell of the "good" days at 4ft from the WNW, and that clean offshore wind. But if you can wait, the glassy conditions on Sunday, August 30th afternoon could be the most enjoyable session of the whole run. Just remember, it's small.
None of these are for beginners; that 4ft on the 24th is fine for intermediates, and the 5ft on the 29th is pushing it a bit. The long period on the 24th (11s) means the point will handle it nicely.
