The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the Mullaghmore zone over the next couple of weeks.

First off, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough start. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a massive 5° warmer than what we'd normally expect for this time of year. That's a real standout, a proper anomaly. But that’s where the good news almost ends for the next week or so.

From Friday the 17th right through to the end of July, it's a pretty grim run. We're looking at a solid 13-day stretch of flat to tiny, weak swell. The combined energy is just a whisper in the weeds, mostly reading between 23 and 62 (weak energy), with a few afternoons like the 24th July showing a tickle of 201 (moderate). But that's a tease. The wind is almost always on it or cross-on, and it's coming from the NNW or NW. That's the wrong direction for this spot, and it's making for a messy, blown-out ocean. The wave heights are barely breaking the 2 ft mark most days, with a period of 6 to 11 seconds. It's just flat, mate. Honestly, there's nothing for a surfer to get excited about in this first half of the outlook.

The real story, and the only story worth paddling out for, starts to build late on the 24th of July. By Friday afternoon, the combined energy jumps to 201 (moderate), with a 3 ft swell from the WNW and a 10-second period. It’s still cross-on and messy, but it’s a sign of life.

Then, the standout window arrives on the 25th and 26th of July. Saturday morning the 25th sees real energy – 5 ft from the WNW with a combined energy of 522 (moderate to strong). The wind is still cross-on, which isn't perfect, but it's a light breeze. That’s the best we’re going to get. The swell is starting to get some size, and the WNW direction is a lot closer to the optimum NW for this break. By Sunday the 26th, the morning looks good with a 5 ft swell from the WNW, a 9-second period, and the wind swinging to a light NW. That's a massive improvement, offering clean conditions. The combined energy sits at 380 (moderate to strong). This is the pick of the window. The afternoon on the 26th gets a bit bigger at 6 ft, but the wind goes cross-on again, so it'll be a bit more lumpy.

The real grunt shows up on the 27th of July. Monday morning we’re looking at 7 ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, and a combined energy of 867 (strong). The wind is onshore from the NW. That's a serious swell, but at this size, Mullaghmore is a big-wave reef break for experts only. The afternoon drops to 7 ft with a fresh breeze, making it even more challenging. The energy is through the roof at 916 (strong).

After that, the swell backs off through the end of the month and into the start of August, dropping back to the 3 ft to 4 ft range with cross-on winds, so it fades pretty quickly.

So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are a write-off. The only real chance for a wave is the window from Saturday the 25th of July through to Monday the 27th of July. The standout is the morning of the 26th of July – a decent 5 ft WNW swell, a solid 9-second period, and light offshore wind. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only clean surf on the board. Monday the 27th is for the big dogs only.

Rusty out.
