Alright, I’ll give it to you straight, folks. Rusty here, and let me tell you, looking out at Mullaghmore over this forecast period… it’s a tough watch. This is a proper reef set-up that needs the right key to unlock it, and for the next week and a half, the key is all but lost in the mud.
For the first nine days—from Friday the 3rd right through until the 12th—it’s basically a write-off. The swell is small, mostly under 3 feet, and the wind is constantly messing with the surface. You’ve got a mix of cross and cross-onshore winds, combined with a weak energy reading (mostly below 200, sometimes just 50-80). The wave comment on every single session for that period is "poor surf conditions," which tells you everything. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
There is a significant gap here. You’re looking at nearly ten days of very little to nothing worth paddling out for.
Now, here’s where things get a little interesting. On Sunday the 12th, in the afternoon, the glass comes down—dead calm. And the swell starts to show its teeth. A 5ft groundswell from the west, with a period hitting 11 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 499, which is moderate but solid. And the wind? Glassy. Clean. That’s the first time we see "expect good surf conditions" pop up. This is the standout window for the entire outlook.
That little window carries into Monday the 13th. Morning and afternoon both clean, with a light offshore from the SSE or southerly. Swell holds at 4ft to 5ft, period stays long at 11-12 seconds. The energy is strong, 535 and 416. For Mullaghmore, this west groundswell with a long period is exactly what you want—it will line up beautifully on this sheltered reef. The offshore wind will make it perfect. Just know this is an advanced wave, and with 5ft it's manageable for strong surfers but not for beginners.
After that, the pattern fades again. The rest of the second week sees the swell drop back under 3 feet, and the wind turns cross-off or cross-on, but the energy is weak again. Nothing that really shouts at you.
So, here's the bottom line: if you’ve got the patience and the skill, the only real opportunity in this 16-day stretch is Sunday afternoon the 12th and Monday the 13th. Clean, glassy, lined-up west swell at a world-class reef. A classic Mullaghmore moment, but don’t be late.
Rusty.
