The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s comin’ up for our little corner of the coast.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a slow start. The first week or so is looking pretty flat and sad. We’re talking about a gap from now, the 13th of July, all the way through until the 21st where there’s just not enough push to get excited about. Swell heights are barely a whisper, and the energy is weak. You’d be floating around out there more than surfing.
The first real sign of life shows up on the 21st of July. The swell bumps up to around 3 ft from the WNW, and the energy finally gets into a moderate range. It’s still a bit messy with cross-onshore winds, so not a standout, but at least there’s something to paddle for.
Now, the best on offer comes on the 22nd of July. Wednesday morning is looking magic. We’ve got a 4 ft swell from the west, with a 9-second period, bringing a moderate wave energy (269). The wind is dead calm – glassy. That’s the kind of clean that makes you want to call in sick. Mullaghmore will be the spot to be. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 61°F, so you can leave the thickest rubber at home. It’s a sheltered reef break, so it handles the NW direction well, but keep in mind that the crowds can show up *sometimes* when it’s clean.
The following Thursday, the 23rd, is also worth a mention. We’ve got a 3 ft west swell, still moderate energy, but the wind swings offshore from the ESE at 9 mph. That’s clean, surfable conditions. It’s not the size of the 22nd, but it’s a solid, user-friendly day.
The next week is a bit of a mixed bag. The swell stays small, and the wind is often a problem. The 26th of July morning has a fresh offshore breeze from the ESE at 19 mph with a 3 ft west swell, but that wind is strong enough to make paddling a battle. The afternoon of the 28th of July picks up a bit of energy with a 3 ft, 10-second swell from the west, but the cross-onshore wind from the WNW at 16 mph will chop it up.
Overall, don’t waste your energy on the first week. Point your board towards the 22nd of July for the true glassy goodness. After that, keep an eye on the 23rd for a clean, tidy session before the wind starts to mess things up again.
Rusty.
