The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee, let's chew the fat on the coming days at Mullaghmore.
Right now, it's a quiet start. Most of the next two weeks looks pretty ordinary, but there are a couple of windows that get the heart rate up a little.
The real standout, and really the only one worth circling on the calendar, is Saturday the 29th of August. We've got a pulse of new swell rolling in, with the combined energy hitting 344 (moderate) and a solid 6ft of westerly-northwest swell. What makes it special is the light offshore flow from the SSW keeping things clean. This is big enough to get the reef working, but at 6ft and a short 8-second period, it's not going to be a monster, just a proper, fun-sized session for the experienced crew. The only buzzkill? Crowds are *possible* here, so get in early if you can.
Before that, there's a little tease if you're desperate. Monday the 24th of August has some clean conditions in the morning with a 3ft west-northwest swell and a moderate 254 combined energy. The wind will be offshore from the ESE, so the faces should be nice. It's not huge, but it's something to wet the line.
After the 29th, the swell drops off hard, and we slide back into a stretch of poor conditions. We see another possible pulse around Tuesday the 2nd of September, with some cleaner conditions and a 3ft west swell. The combined energy is 202 (moderate), and the period jumps to a very long 13 seconds. That's a proper groundswell, but it's small. If it had any size, the long period would be perfect for this reef, but as it is, it's just a whisper.
In between these events, there are big gaps of several days where the waves are too small or the wind is onshore, messy, or too strong. For the first week, it's a waiting game. If you're a kitesurfer, some of those choppier, windier days mid-period might look more interesting than a paddle session.
The water temp is sitting right where it should be for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
So, to sum it up: Hang tight for Saturday the 29th. That's your best shot. The rest is mostly a whole lot of waiting and watching.
