The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let me tell you what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch for the most part. We’re looking at a long, quiet spell with very little to get excited about. The first real action doesn’t show up for over a week, so don’t bother rushing to the water.
The best chance we get falls on Wednesday, September 2nd. Mullaghmore will finally see a pulse of 6 ft swell from the West, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a moderate energy swell (combined energy of all swells directed here is 548). The real kicker is the wind – it’s glassy, dead calm. That’s a major positive for a reef break like this, meaning the surface will be clean. The troughs will be deep, and the lines will be clean. The swell direction is straight out of the West, which is a fair bit off the optimum Northwest direction, but with that glassy surface, it’s still the best on offer.
Following that, Thursday, September 3rd morning holds some promise. The swell is 6 ft from the West, period 9 seconds, and the wind is blowing offshore from the Southeast at 12 mph. The water’s going to be clean and the wave energy is moderate (492). This is a solid, rideable day for the advanced crew. However, that afternoon the wind picks up and the looks get messier.
The rest of the run is a write-off until then. There’s a long gap from now until that Wednesday. The 6 ft swell on Saturday, August 29th is blown out by onshore winds, and the little 2 ft dribble on other days is just not worth the paddle. The biggest swell we see is 7 ft on the afternoon of Thursday, September 3rd, but it’s with a stiff cross-offshore breeze that makes it a tough, choppy affair.
The water temperature here is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
So, there you have it. One glassy day to aim for if you’re keen. The rest? Keep your board in the bag.
Rusty.
