Hey, Rusty here. Let's be real: the surf outlook at Mullaghmore for the next couple of weeks is mostly a bummer. This is a serious reef that needs everything in its favour, and for a long stretch, it's just not there. We've got a long run of weak, short-period swell and messy cross-shore to cross-onshore winds. The water's about 62°F, which is nearly 5°F warmer than average for this time of year – that's a pretty big deal, feels like summer's arrived early.
Thursday the 2nd kicks off with a 6ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore, so it's lumpy and nasty. Combined swell energy hits 627 (moderate, but wasted). That pattern sticks around for days: Friday the 3rd drops to 3ft, but the wind goes light and cross-off, so the surface cleans up – still, the swell's too small to get excited about (energy around 221, weak). Saturday the 4th bumps back up to 6ft from the west, but with 19-22 mph cross-winds, it's a lumpy, blown-out mess (energy peaks at 526 – moderate, but all ugly). Honestly, this whole first week is a write-off for paddle surfing. With that much wind and a reef setup producing lumpy, poorly shaped waves, it might honestly look more interesting for kite surfing than a traditional surf.
There's a long gap of mostly poor to tiny surf through the middle of the month. The one flicker of hope shows up much later, on Friday the 10th of July. That morning we get a 5ft swell from the WNW with an 11-second period – that's a proper groundswell, packing some punch. The combined energy hits 572 (moderate, but much more significant). The wind is light offshore out of the ESE at just 3 mph, which will groom those waves beautifully. This is easily the standout window: clean conditions, a decent sized, longer-period swell, and the direction is close to the optimum NW. It's 9 days out, so treat it as promising but not locked in – but if it comes together, this is the session to circle. The afternoon swings onshore and drops off, so aim for that morning.
After that, we're back to tiny, weak, and onshore for the rest of the run. Saturday 11th through the end shows nothing over 3ft with periods falling off to 7-8 seconds and onshore winds. Energy readings stay below 120 (weak) from the 12th onward. Honestly, the only real option to get excited about is that Friday 10th morning. Keep an eye on it.
