The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough one for the Tullaghan area. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a bust for decent surf. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak, and mostly messy conditions.
Right now, from the 16th of July right through to the 23rd, it’s all tiny. We’re talking ankle-snappers, with the odd pulse of swell barely reaching 2 feet, and the period is short and weak. The combined energy is just a whisper, mostly in the teens and twenties, with one reading of 54 (joules per square metre). The winds are often onshore or cross-onshore, and even the glassy mornings come with zero wave height. It’s a kite surfer’s dream, not a paddler’s.
Then we get a bit of a pulse on the 24th of July. The swell picks up to 3 feet from the WNW, with a period of 10 seconds, and the energy jumps to 236 (joules per square metre). But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. The surf report is calling it “poor surf conditions” – it’s just not worth the paddle out. That bumpy, blown-out look carries through the next few days.
The only real glimmer I can see is right at the tail end of the forecast, on the morning of the 27th of July. We’ll have a 3 foot swell from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds, and a combined energy of 111 (joules per square metre). The wind is going to be light offshore from the ESE, which will clean things up. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – it’s a small window. The rest of that day and the days after quickly go back to choppy, onshore junk.
So, plain and simple: there’s no standout session here. The best on offer is that Monday the 27th morning, but it’s a low bar. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, it’s a rough run. Stick to the forecasts, they can change. But for now, I’d leave the boards in the van.
Rusty.
