The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Looking at the next couple of weeks, and I’ve got to be honest – it’s a real waiting game. There’s a long stretch of poor conditions, with only a couple of brief windows where it might be worth getting wet.
The first decent option is over a week out. The weather's locked in a stubborn pattern.
The only break in the game is Tullaghan (Leitrim) . It's a point break for intermediates, fairly consistent, exposed to the swell with a best direction from the NW. Water temp is about 62°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that's a small plus.
The first week is a write-off. From now through the 24th, it's all cross-onshore winds and lumpy, choppy surf. Swell energy is weak to moderate, with a reading of 486 on the 18th, but it's just not rideable. There's one small chance on Monday morning (August 24th) . You'll see a 3ft swell from the WNW with a 10-second period and a moderate energy of 131. The winds go light cross-offshore, and conditions are clean. It's surfable, but very ordinary. If you're itching, that's your shot.
Then it dries up again. From the 25th through the 1st of September, most days have energy under 100, and the winds are either onshore or too strong. That's a solid gap of 5 to 6 days with nothing.
Looking into the start of September, there's a tiny glimmer. On Wednesday morning (September 2nd) , we get a 3ft swell from the west, period of 8 seconds, with moderate energy at 123. The wind is light and cross-offshore, leaving it clean. It's just "surfable but ordinary." By the afternoon, the swell picks up to 5ft, energy climbs to 357, but the wind swings around to a light cross-onshore, which will mess up the face.
No true standouts here. The best bet is the morning of August 24th for the clean conditions, or the morning of September 2nd if you just need a paddle. For the rest, keep the board in the car and wait for a better forecast.
That's all from me. Stay patient, Rusty.
