The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Tullaghan (Leitrim). The water’s sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 62°, so that’s a nice little bonus.
To be honest, the next few days look pretty grim. There’s a real flat spell through Friday and the weekend. The 21st of August are a write-off – tiny, choppy, and messing about with poor conditions. Sunday morning the 23rd goes glassy but with only 0.7ft of swell, it’s not even worth paddling out for.
The first proper sign of life comes on Monday the 24th of August. We’ve got a bit of a pulse from the west-northwest with 4ft of swell and an 11-second period, giving a moderate wave energy of 265. The wind swings offshore from the southeast, so the surf is clean. It’s small but it’s a start. Tuesday the 25th stays clean but drops back to 3ft, so it’s a real knee-slapper.
Now, the real standout is Thursday the 27th of August. This is the one to circle. The swell jumps to 7ft from the west-northwest, with a short period of 8 seconds. That’s going to dump a lot of energy in quickly – combined energy of 574, which is strong. The wind is light and cross-off from the east-southeast, so it’ll be clean. At 7ft, this is heading into proper territory – not for the grommets, but for the lads who know what they’re doing. The crowds can be around sometimes, but on a Thursday you might get a bit more room.
After that, things get messy again. The 28th of August is blown out with cross-onshore winds, and the 31st of August brings another pulse of 6ft but with questionable wind and tide conditions. The first week of September is a mix of cross-shores and onshore slop, with nothing really coming together. The 5th of September is a howling westerly with 19 mph winds, so that’s more for the kite crew than the paddle crew.
So, to sum it up: the best window is Thursday the 27th of August. Get on it if you can. The rest of the 16-day run is mostly small or blown out, with a few clean, tiny days in between.
