The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s happening at Kilcummin Harbour over the next couple of weeks.
Right now it’s flat. Sunday the 23rd starts with a tiny 1ft WNW swell and clean conditions, but there’s no power – poor surf. Afternoon gets a slight bump to 2ft but it’s cross-shore and still no good.
Monday the 24th is where it gets interesting. We’ve got a solid 5ft to 6ft WNW swell with a 11-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore and light. That means clean faces and proper energy. The combined energy jumps to moderate to strong, so the reef should start showing some decent lines. This is the first real standout – Monday morning and afternoon both look good.
Tuesday the 25th drops back. Morning sees 4ft WNW swell but the wind is a moderate cross-off, and energy drops. By afternoon it’s down to 3ft and poor. Wednesday is worse – short period ENE slop and rain, not worth your time.
Thursday the 27th offers a little WNW swell at 3ft but it’s cross-onshore with light rain – not good. Friday is choppy and onshore with 3ft to 5ft NW swell. Saturday the 29th brings a bump in size – 8ft WNW swell, but the cross-shore wind and period of only 7 seconds means it’s messy and only marginal. Sunday the 30th hits 10ft NNW swell with a 10-second period and cross-onshore wind – strong energy but too rough for a good session. This is expert-only territory if you’re keen on a battle, but it’s not clean.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday September 1st are mostly onshore and small, with poor conditions. Wednesday September 2nd is a real standout. Morning brings 8ft W swell with offshore wind and a 8-second period, clean and punchy. The energy is strong. By afternoon, it builds to 8ft W swell with 9-second period, light offshore wind, and energy is very strong – excellent surf for experienced surfers. This is the best of the run.
Thursday September 3rd holds 8ft to 10ft W swell with offshore to cross-off winds, and energy very strong – again excellent for experts. Friday September 4th drops to 5ft W swell with moderate offshore wind – good conditions for intermediates. Saturday and Sunday taper off but stay clean with offshore winds and 3ft to 6ft swell.
Monday September 7th ends the forecast with 5ft WNW swell but cross-onshore wind and choppy conditions – not recommended.
Overall, the first real surf hits Monday the 24th, then we have a gap of poor days until the next standout on Wednesday September 2nd. That Wednesday afternoon is the pick of the whole period – 8ft W swell, offshore wind, clean faces, and plenty of energy. If you’re an experienced surfer, don’t miss it.
