The Lowdown
Right then, Rusty here again. Let's talk about Kilcummin Harbour in feet and miles per hour.
I’ll be honest, the forecast is looking bleak for the first week and a bit. Nearly ten days of onshore wind and messy conditions mean you’re better off doing something else. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s one small mercy while you stare at the lumpy, choppy nothing.
The first real chance for a surf comes on Monday, August 24th. There will be a 6ft swell from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds, carrying moderate energy. The wind turns cross-offshore and clean, so that morning and afternoon will have some rideable waves. It’s not going to be magic, but it’s the first clean surf in a while.
The big standout is Sunday, August 30th. Mark it down. We’re looking at a powerful 12ft NW groundswell early, with a huge amount of energy. The wind will be a light, clean offshore from the SSE, which is perfect – expect clean, powerful walls. This is for experts only. The swell direction lines up nicely with the break's best direction. The morning session is the one to chase. The afternoon gets even bigger at 13ft, but the wind changes, so don't sleep in.
Then on Monday, September 1st, there’s another solid day. A 5ft NNW swell with a gentle, clean offshore breeze from the South. The report says "expect good surf conditions," and with that wind, it’ll be a fun, less intimidating session after the big Sunday.
So, to wrap it up: the 24th of August is a low-key option, but the 30th of August is the big dog. That long-period groundswell with clean offshore wind is the best call in the whole forecast. The 1st of September is a solid, more manageable follow-up.
Rusty.
