The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Kilcummin Harbour.
First up, water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a real treat, so don’t expect that winter wetsuit you usually reach for.
Right now, and for the next week, it’s a bit of a tough watch. There’s surf on offer, but the conditions are just not playing ball. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the period is short and weak. The combined swell energy is pretty weak, sitting around 100 to 150 (108 to 150). It’s shallow, choppy, and blown out. Hold your horses.
The first sniff of something decent comes around Friday, July 24th. The morning has a 5ft NW swell rolling in on a 10-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore. That’s a big step up, and the energy jumps to 377. It’s still only a marginal call, but it’s the first clean window we’ve seen. The swell is a bit small for a reef, but it’s a start.
The real stand-out? That’s got to be Friday, July 31st. The morning brings a solid 10ft WNW swell, with a 10-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore. The combined energy is a massive 2000, which is proper strong. The report says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers,” and I’m with it. That’s a big, powerful groundswell hitting the reef, and with the wind cleaning it up, it’s going to be a serious session. The afternoon holds similar size at 12ft, but the wind picks up a bit. Still, the morning is the pick of the entire 16-day window. Just be aware, this is over a week away, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but it’s got that long-range promise.
The week leading up to that will see some building swell, but it’s all cross-shore or blowy, so it’s messy. The period from July 25th to 30th has some decent size (7ft to 8ft), but the wind is all over the place, making it marginal at best. The energy is high (800 to 1300), but the quality isn’t there.
After that big day on the 31st, the surf drops off fast. August 1st and 2nd see the swell fading to 4ft or less, with the wind turning strong and onshore, so it’s back to the drawing board.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The second week builds, but it’s messy. The one true standout is the morning of Friday, July 31st at Kilcummin Harbour. Get on it if you can handle the size.
Rusty.
