Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for Kilcummin Harbour over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a pretty quiet spell ahead. There are a few windows where you might get a wave, but nothing that'll have you rushing to grab your board. The first week or so is looking very marginal, with the best of the surf not arriving until the weekend of the 18th and 19th of July.
The standout window looks to be Wednesday the 8th of July. The swell drops a touch from the weekend, settling around 4ft from the west, with a solid period of 9 seconds. That's a nice, clean groundswell. The wind is the real winner here – glassy or light offshore from the south, making for some clean, lined-up waves at this reef break. The combined energy is moderate, sitting around 247 to 293, so there's enough push for a fun session. It's an intermediate spot, and it can get crowded, so get in early. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
There's another little pulse on the weekend of the 18th of July, but it's a bit of a mixed bag. The morning of Saturday the 18th has some potential with 5ft west-northwest swell and an 11-second period, pushing the combined energy up to a strong 534. That's a solid groundswell, and the winds are cross-offshore, meaning clean faces. However, the period is long, so expect longer lulls between sets, and it might be a bit much for beginners. The afternoon looks lumpy and poor. The following Sunday morning also has some size but the wind is messy.
The real message here is patience. From now until that Wednesday the 8th, you're looking at small swell, strong cross-offshore winds, and marginal conditions. The weekend of the 11th and 12th is pretty poor with onshore winds. If you're itching for a paddle, Wednesday and Thursday mornings of the 8th and 9th are your best bet for clean if not overly powerful surf. The bigger swell around the 18th is promising but it's a long way off, so forecasts could change. Keep your eye on it.
Rusty.
