The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. We’re looking at the local picture here, just the one spot, so we’ll work with what we’ve got.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 63°F with a big anomaly of 5°F warmer than normal. That’s a proper tropical feel for this time of year – you’ll be surfing in a shorty or maybe even boardies if you’re tough enough.
Right now, it’s a rough start. The first few days from Saturday the 18th right through to Thursday the 23rd are a write-off. The swell is small, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is weak (values between 44 and 144). The wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. You’re better off staying home.
Then we get a flicker of hope on Friday the 24th. The swell picks up to 5ft from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds and a combined energy of 370 (moderate). The wind is cross-offshore, keeping things clean. This is a marginal surf forecast, but it’s the first real sign of life. Still, the crowd factor might be an issue – it’s known to be busy sometimes.
Saturday the 25th is the standout. The morning shows 8ft from the WNW with a 9-second period and a big energy jump to 1057 (strong). The wind is cross-offshore again, so it’s clean. The swell is getting up there, though – over 8ft means this is for experienced surfers only. The break is a reef setup, and with the swell direction matching the optimum NNW, it should line up nicely. The afternoon holds at 8ft with a 10-second period. This is your best window, but it’s still only a marginal call, so don’t expect perfection.
Sunday the 26th gets messy. Morning has a fresh cross-shore wind with lumpy conditions – poor surf. Afternoon cleans up a bit with cross-offshore wind, but the energy is still strong (912). The 27th Monday morning has clean 8ft surf, but the wind is getting stronger (35 km/h) and the energy is 1033. Again, for experts only.
After that, the pattern gets choppy. Tuesday the 28th is cross-onshore and lumpy. Then Wednesday the 29th morning sees a solid 10ft from the WNW with a 9-second period and energy at 1219 (strong). The wind is cross-offshore, so it’s clean, but that’s serious size – only for the brave. The afternoon pushes energy to 1600.
Thursday the 30th has the biggest swell of the run: 12ft from the WNW with a 10-second period and energy at 2407 (very strong). But the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. The afternoon has the same size but onshore wind, which is no good.
The final days into the start of August show the swell dropping back to 5ft to 6ft, with onshore winds and fading energy (350-561). Poor conditions again.
Overall, the only real window for a decent, clean surf is Friday the 24th through to Monday the 27th, with Saturday the 25th being the pick of the bunch. But remember, this is a reef break that can be inconsistent, and the size means it’s not for everyone. The crowds could be a factor too.
Rusty.
