Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m staring down the next couple of weeks here for Kilcummin Harbour.
First off, this is a reef break that can be a little hit or miss, but when it gets good, it gets real good. Water temp is sitting at 60°, which is a hair warmer than usual for the season – nothing huge, but a nice little touch. The overall pattern is a bit of a tease: some clean swell to start, a long dead spell, and then a promising window in the second week.
Friday July 3rd is a decent kickoff. The morning session is your best call with a 4ft WSW swell and a 10-second interval. The combined energy is moderate (492), and you’ve got a gentle offshore wind out of the south – that’s the right direction for this spot, keeping things clean and rideable. The afternoon turns a bit ragged, so hit the dawn patrol.
Through Saturday and Sunday (July 4th & 5th), the swell actually jumps up to 8ft on Saturday. That’s getting into proper size territory, not for beginners. The wind is cross-off, so it’s not a total loss, but the wave energy is high (into the 900s). It’s powerful, but conditions are just a bit too messy to call it a standout. Sunday backs off a bit, but the wind issues stick around.
Then the ocean goes to sleep. From Monday July 6th all the way through to Saturday July 12th, there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. Wave heights drop, periods get short, and the wind is consistently wrong. Energy readings fall into the double digits most days. It’s one of those long gaps where you just have to wait.
Now, here’s the payoff. Monday July 13th is the real standout of the forecast. Kilcummin Harbour wakes up with a 4ft swell from the west, but the magic is in that 12-second interval – proper groundswell. Wave energy pushes into 536 in the morning and climbs to 662 by the afternoon. The wind is a light cross-off from the SSE, meaning clean, lined-up waves. That direction is a good match for the break’s exposure. This is the day.
Tuesday July 14th is almost as good. We’ve got 5ft from the west, 10-second period, with a gentle offshore SSE breeze. Energy is still up in the 500s. Another solid day, just a tad less power than Monday. Morning again is the pick.
After that, the plug gets pulled. From Wednesday July 15th, the swell tapers fast. Heights fall under 3ft, energy drops below 100, and by the end we’re looking at tiny 1ft waves. The wind tries to stay offshore, but there’s simply no push left.
Bottom line: don’t waste your time on the first week unless you’re after a flat-water paddle. The real deal is Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th of July. That’s your window for clean, powered-up surf. Get in there.
