Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Kilcummin Harbour.
Right off the bat, the next week and a half is going to be a tough slog. The water temp is sitting at 59° which is about average for this time of year, so that’s not the issue. The problem is the wind and the quality of the swell. We’ve got a run of poor to marginal conditions from Saturday the 4th all the way through to about Thursday the 16th of July. That’s a long gap with nothing worth paddling out for. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross-on, with a few stronger breezes, and the swell is just not arranging itself well for this spot.
The only real bright spot in the whole 16-day window is Wednesday the 8th of July. That morning we’ve got a light offshore breeze from the south at just 6 mph, clean conditions, with a 4ft swell out of the west at 9 seconds. It’s not big, but the combined wave energy is moderate at 294, and it’s clean. Then into the afternoon it goes glassy – light breeze from the WNW at 3 mph, and the swell cleans up even more with a period stretching to 10 seconds and energy at 325. That’s the pick of the week for sure. A really nice, clean little session if you’ve got a grovel board.
Thursday the 9th holds similar, with clean, light wind conditions, but the swell is a touch smaller at 4ft.
Then look at Friday the 10th of July. The morning gets interesting. We’ve got light rain, a slight air from the ESE, and a 5ft west swell with a long period of 11 seconds. The energy jumps up to 549, which is decent. That’s a proper groundswell, and it’s clean. Now, at a reef break like Kilcummin Harbour, that longer period west swell should line up nicely, giving you some proper shape and longer waits between sets. This is the standout of the entire forecast. Conditions look very good for the morning session. The afternoon turns a bit cross-on with a northeast breeze, so get in early.
After that, it’s back to disappointment. From Saturday the 11th through to Saturday the 18th, it’s a wasteland of small, weak swell and poor wind. We’re looking at swell heights dropping to 1ft to 2ft and combined energy falling to double digits – weak stuff. Not worth the effort.
There’s a tiny flicker on Sunday the 19th of July with a 3ft west-northwest swell and a light offshore wind from the south-southwest in the morning, but at 143 energy it’s weak, and the description says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”. The afternoon gets a bit more size but drops in quality.
So to sum it up: this forecast is a long dry spell bookended by the 8th to the 10th of July. Wednesday morning the 8th is your best bet for clean, user-friendly waves. Friday morning the 10th is the real standout – bigger, longer-period, and clean. Don’t bother with anything else for the next two weeks unless the forecast changes.
Stay stoked, and keep an eye on the sky.
