G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s take a look at what’s shaping up at Kilcummin Harbour – a reef break that’s exposed to the swell, fairly consistent, and likes the swell coming from the NNW.
Right now, there’s nothing going on. The first few days are a bust. Monday 6 July through to Tuesday morning has a solid 6ft swell from the west with a short 8-second period, but the wind is messy cross-off at 12-16 mph and the energy is only moderate (382-450). It’s marginal at best – not worth getting wet. That continues into Tuesday and Wednesday morning – the swell drops a little, wind lightens, but it’s still poor. By Wednesday 8 July afternoon, we’ve got 4ft at 10 seconds from the west, light cross-off breeze, energy at 305 – it’s clean but not firing. Just surfable.
Thursday 9 July stays clean with 4-5ft from the west, 9-second period, light wind, energy around 305 to 259. Getting better.
Then the standout: Friday 10 July morning. This is the one. The swell is 5ft from the west, period jumps to 11 seconds – that’s proper groundswell with energy. Combined energy hits a strong 513. And the wind? Glassy – NE at 3 mph, dead offshore for this reef. That means clean, peeling lines. Water temp is 59°, about normal for this time of year. This is the best session of the outlook – get on it early because the afternoon turns ugly with northerly wind.
Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July drop off fast. Swell shrinks to 3ft then 2ft, wind shifts onshore or cross-on at 16 mph, and energy drops to a weak 87-41. Not worth it. That flat, windy stretch continues right through to Saturday 19 July – waves under 3ft, mostly onshore, energy often below 100. A long dull gap of more than a week.
Now, a big pulse arrives Monday 20 July and Tuesday 21 July – the swell jumps to 10-12ft from the WNW with a 10-11 second period. Combined energy explodes to 1941-2725 – very strong. But the wind is cross-on or onshore at 6-12 mph, and it’s marginal. At this size, it’s experts only – beginners stay away. For a reef, that much energy will be heavy and challenging, especially with wind chop. It’s a serious session for the experienced, but not the clean, glassy perfection of that Friday 10 July morning.
That Friday 10 July morning is your best bet. Mark it. If you’re an expert and want power, the 20th-21st might be worth a look, but expect it to be rough.
Rusty.
