Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kilcummin Harbour over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Kilcummin Harbour.
Truth is, the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing but poor surf conditions right through until Wednesday the 23rd of July. The models are showing a mix of onshore and cross-shore winds, and the swell is just too small and weak to get excited about. For a solid week, there’s nothing to recommend.
The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about 1° above the norm for this time of year. Nothing to write home about, just a touch warmer than average.
Now, things start to get interesting towards the end of the month. The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Thursday the 24th of July. The swell is building to a solid 7 ft from the W with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is light and cross-shore, which is a major positive. The combined energy is 527 (moderate wave energy), but the wave comment says it’s marginal. Still, it’s the first decent pulse we’ve seen in a while. That said, 7 ft is getting into the size where it’s mostly for experienced surfers.
The standout, however, looks to be the morning of Saturday the 26th of July. We’ve got a solid 8 ft groundswell from the W, with a period of 10 seconds. The wind is WNW at 9 mph, which is cross-shore, and the combined energy jumps to 1070 (strong wave energy). This is the biggest, most powerful swell of the window. Keep in mind, with a 10-second period, it’s got some punch, but a long period groundswell like this can sometimes close out a beach break, so it might be better if you can find a point or reef setup. Kilcummin Harbour is a reef break, so this could be a real treat. It’s in the 8 ft range, so it’s definitely for the experienced crew only. Crowds are listed as “sometimes” possible, so you might have a few others with the same idea.
The Sunday afternoon on the 26th pushes up to 8 ft from the W, with a 10-second period and a combined energy of 1409 (very strong). That’s big, powerful, and expert-only territory. The wind is a bit stronger at 12 mph, so it won’t be as clean.
So, the long and short of it: you’ve got a lot of flat, poor days to sit through, but the weekend of the 26th of July is the one to circle. The morning of the 26th is your best bet for a proper session, but it’s a big one, so bring your big-wave board and your wits.
Rusty.
