The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a full 16-day window for this spot, but it’s gonna be a real slow burn before we see anything worthwhile. Get ready for a long wait.
The first week is a write-off, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. From Friday the 17th right through to Sunday the 23rd, we’ve got persistent onshore winds and weak, short-period windswell. The wave energy is low, and the conditions are consistently labeled as poor. You’ll be looking at bumpy, choppy lines with no real power. The wind is hammering from the north and northwest, staying on it like a dog with a bone. Just leave the board in the shed.
Things start to get a bit more interesting around the 24th of July. The swell picks up, but it’s a messy affair. The wind, swinging from the west and WNW, is still cross-shore, making for lumpy, cross-chop conditions. The waves hit 8ft on Friday the 24th, but the energy is there for the wrong reasons – it’s messy and blown out. This is strictly for the die-hard crew or perhaps the kite surfers, as the beach-and-reef setup looks more like a wind sport zone than a paddle session.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, arrives on Tuesday the 28th of July. This is the cream of the crop. We’ve got a solid 7ft of WNW groundswell with a gorgeous 10-second period, and the wind... the wind drops to nothing. Glass-off. The wave state is described as "glassy" – that’s the magic word. For a spot like Kilcummin Harbour, which is a reef break exposed to the optimum northwest swell direction, this is about as clean as it gets. This is the one to clear your diary for. The morning of the 29th (Wednesday) also looks promising with a clean 4ft NW swell, but Tuesday is the king.
The rest of the second week is a bit of a mixed bag. The 27th July (Monday) offers a clean 7ft swell with a cross-offshore wind, which is good, but Tuesday is the main event. After that, the swell sticks around in the 5ft to 6ft range, but the wind picks up again, making it a bit more of a gamble. The water temperature will be about average for this time of year.
Remember, this is a reef break that’s fairly consistent, and with the offshore wind direction being from the south, you can get some really clean lines. But for the love of all things holy, don’t get excited about the first week. It’s all about that Tuesday the 28th of July.
Rusty.
