The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down, feet and miles style. Rusty here. The next couple of weeks at Kilcummin Harbour are a slog. Flat, small, and messy for days, then a proper wall of water shows up late in the game. Gotta be patient.
Right now, through Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th, it’s ankle-biters. Swell heights are around 1ft to 2ft out of the west, with weak combined energy (116 dropping to 35). The wind is cross or cross-onshore, so the surface is choppy and rippled. Not worth it.
Thursday the 16th through Tuesday the 22nd is more of the same – small, weak, and mostly onshore. North and northwest winds blow straight on or cross-on, with swell heights barely hitting 3ft. Combined energy is mostly in the double digits to low triple digits. It’s a dry spell. Wednesday morning the 23rd cleans up with cross-offshore wind, but the swell is only 1ft. Not enough.
Then the big one. On Friday morning the 24th, a very long period groundswell hits – 10ft from the west-northwest, with a period of 13 seconds. Combined energy blasts to 2890. That’s serious power. The wind is cross-onshore, so it’ll be a little lumpy. This is for experts only – way too big for beginners. The long period means better shape at the reef, with longer lulls between sets.
The real standout? Saturday the 25th. Morning brings 7ft west-northwest swell with an 11-second period, and the wind goes glassy from the south. Combined energy is 1162 – strong. Conditions are clean, glassy. That’s the session to aim for. The afternoon holds 7ft with glassy conditions too, but light rain may show up. Sunday the 26th stays solid at 8ft, but the wind picks up fresh from the west, making it lumpy.
Monday the 27th keeps the 10ft swell, but the wind is strong and cross-off or offshore. The morning is clean, but the wind is fresh. By Tuesday the 28th, the swell drops to 6ft and the wind gets strong, messy. After that, it’s back to small and poor.
So, bottom line: Friday the 24th is a beast for the brave, but Saturday the 25th is the call – clean, glassy, and solid. Skip the first ten days. That Saturday morning is the one.
Rusty.
