The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again – let’s talk in feet and miles per hour.
The outlook is a tough one for a while. The first week is mostly a dud, with a big gap of days where you’d be wasting your time. The first real chance to surf doesn’t come until Tuesday the 25th, and even then it’s just okay.
We’re looking at Kilcummin Harbour (Ireland), a reef break that needs the right swell direction. The best swell is from the NNW, and we don’t get that for a while.
From Monday the 17th through Monday the 24th, it’s a no-go. The wind is onshore, the swell is small, or the period is too short. Tuesday the 18th has a spike to about 7ft from the W, but the wind is a mess – a 30 km/h cross-shore makes it lumpy. Not worth it. Wednesday the 19th morning has a solid 12ft swell from the WNW at 11 seconds, but the wind is a 25 km/h cross-off, and the energy is high (2783) – but the quality just isn’t there. By Thursday and Friday, the wind blows straight onshore from the N, ruining the shape. The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd is flat.
Tuesday the 25th is the first tiny window. Morning brings a 6ft swell from the W, 8 second period, with a light 15 km/h cross-off breeze. The combined energy is moderate (463). It’s clean, and it’s rideable. Water temp is about average. If you’re intermediate and just want to paddle, this is your slot. Crowds are possible here at times.
Now for the real standout. Thursday the 27th of August – this is the one to circle. Swell jumps to a massive 16ft from the W, with a very long 14-second period. That’s serious power (9839). The wind is a gentle 15 km/h cross-off from the SW, making it glassy clean. This is a dream for the reef. But 16ft is way too big for most. This is experts-only. Big, thick sets with plenty of energy. If you’ve got the skills, this is the best day of the entire 16-day outlook.
Friday the 28th drops to a more manageable 8ft from the NNW, but the wind is lumpy and cross-shore. Not a standout.
Then another big one rolls in for Monday the 1st of September – again 16ft from the WNW with a 14-second period, and clean cross-off wind from the SSE. The energy is enormous (9059). Again, only for the very experienced.
So, bottom line: the first week is a wash. The best clean day for the average surfer is Tuesday 25th August. The absolute best, must-paddle day for experts is Thursday 27th August. The 1st of September also has potential, but that’s far out – check back closer to the date.
Don’t fight the wind, boys.
