The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Well, to be honest, the first week and a half is a real struggle. We’ve got a gap of nothing good from now until the morning of Monday the 27th of July. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is small and weak. The water is sitting at 63° which is a fair bit warmer than usual for this time of year – nice for a paddle, but it doesn’t make up for the surf.
The first real standout, and just about the only one, is Kilcummin Harbour on Monday the 27th of July. The morning session is the pick. We’re looking at a solid 8 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the SW. That’s clean, no doubt about it. The combined energy is pumping at 1098 (moderate-to-strong energy), so there’s some grunt behind it. This is intermediate to advanced territory – 8 ft is a bit much for beginners. The swell direction is a near-perfect match for the optimum NNW, so it’s got some shape. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but it won’t be a circus.
The afternoon on the 27th is still decent: 8 ft, clean, but with a bit more wind and a slightly lower score. Still a good option if you can’t make the morning.
After that, Tuesday the 28th of July blows up – 15 ft of WNW swell, but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-shore. That’s a messy, gnarly mess. Only for the absolute experts, and even then, it’s not going to be pretty. The energy is massive at 5250, but the quality is shot. The rest of the week into early August is a write-off: onshore winds, chop, and poor conditions.
So, bottom line: if you’ve got a window, point your board at Kilcummin Harbour on the morning of Monday the 27th. That’s the one. The rest of the 16 days, you’re better off waiting for the next forecast.
Rusty.
