The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Kilcummin Harbour.
To be straight with you, the outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one. The guidance shows this spot as a reef break that’s fairly consistent, but the finder data tells a story of poor surf conditions the entire way through. There’s a gap of a few days with no real surf worth mentioning, and then it's just a long run of small, lumpy, or onshore slop.
Let’s start at the beginning. For the morning of Wednesday, 15th July, we’ve got a tiny 1ft swell from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 29 – that’s barely a ripple. The water temperature is 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing. But with a cross-off wind from the ESE at 6 mph, it’s clean but just too small to bother with. The surf is poor.
The next days just keep repeating the same sad story. Thursday, the 16th, stays at 1ft, and by the afternoon the wind swings north and goes onshore. Friday, the 17th, the wind picks up to 12-15 mph from the north, and that tiny swell gets blown to bits. The swell height nudges up to 4ft on Friday afternoon, but it’s a short-period 5-second wind swell, and the energy is only moderate at 121 – it’s a messy, choppy mess.
We roll through the weekend and into the next week. Saturday, the 18th, and Sunday, the 19th, are the same story: onshore northerlies, small swell, poor conditions. The energy stays weak to moderate. By Monday, the 20th, the wind is from the NNW, and we’re looking at 2ft swell with a 10-second period, but the wind is onshore and the combined energy is 111 – still not enough to save it.
The second week doesn’t offer any hope. From Wednesday, 22nd of July, through to Tuesday, 29th of July, it’s a constant parade of small swell (2ft to 3ft), onshore or cross-onshore winds, and energy levels that rarely break into the triple digits. The only real change comes on Thursday, 24th of July, when the swell picks up to 3ft from the west with a long 12-second period, and the energy jumps to 286 – moderate energy. But the wind is a cross-onshore 15 mph from the NW, making it choppy and poor. It’s still not a goer.
The last few days of the outlook, from the 25th to the 30th, are more of the same. The biggest swell arrives on Thursday, 30th of July, with 5ft from the west at 8 seconds, and strong energy at 273. But again, the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. For a reef break, that’s a messy combination.
There is no standout session here. The conditions are consistently poor, with onshore or cross-onshore winds and small, weak swell most of the time. The only time the swell gets some size, the wind ruins it. This is a blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual. The setup is a reef, so with the strong winds and poor quality, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing if you’re desperate for a fix.
Hang in there, the forecasts can always change.
