Right then, let’s have a look at what we’ve got for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one to write. For a break called Kilcummin Harbour (a reef set-up), we’ve got a little window of clean, rideable surf right at the start, but then it goes pretty quiet for a long stretch.
The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no major surprises there.
Wednesday morning, the 8th of July, is your best bet. It’s looking clear and glassy with a light SSE breeze at 3 mph. We’ve got a 5ft swell rolling in from the W with a 9-second period. The combined energy reading is 353 – solid moderate energy – and the waves should be clean and lined up. That afternoon stays glassy too, with a 4ft W swell and a slightly longer 10-second period. For a reef break, that’s a nice combo. It’s the standout of the whole outlook.
Thursday the 9th still has some shape in the morning. The swell holds at 5ft from the W, but a SW wind at 9 mph is blowing cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean but a bit bumpy on the face. The energy is still there at 312. By the afternoon, it gets a bit messy as the wind swings cross-shore.
Now here’s the bad news. From Friday the 10th right through until the 21st of July, it’s pretty much all poor. There are days of strong onshore winds – Friday and Saturday see a NNE wind hitting 15-19 mph, which will just flatten and chop everything up. By Sunday the 12th, the swell drops below 2ft and the energy readings fall into the low double-digits. That’s a real dry spell.
There is a bit of a pulse that shows up around the 20th and 21st of July – Monday the 20th has a 5ft WNW swell in the afternoon, with a 10-second period and a combined energy of 473 (strong), but the wind is onshore at 9-12 mph from the NNW, so unfortunately it’s going to be messy. Not one for the paddle surfer, that setup looks more interesting for a kite session if you’re into that.
The final few days of the outlook, the 22nd and 23rd of July, see the winds go cross-offshore from the SSW and WSW, so conditions clean up, but the swell is small – mostly 2ft to 3ft – and the energy is weak to moderate. There’s a long period 11-second swell on the 23rd afternoon, but only 2ft, so it’s a bit of a tease.
So to sum it up: get out there Wednesday morning and maybe Thursday morning, because after that, we’re looking at a long gap of over a week with nothing worth paddling for. For this area, a blank run like this is pretty normal when the wind locks in from the north.
Rusty.
