The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
We’re staring down a long, quiet stretch to kick things off. The first solid session isn't on the cards until Friday the 24th of July, so we’ve got a gap of several days with nothing worthwhile. The water is sitting at 63°F which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re keen for a paddle even if the waves are rubbish.
The one true standout in this whole window is Kilcummin Harbour on Friday morning the 24th of July. It’s a reef setup, exposed to the NNW, and we’ve got a 5ft swell rolling in from the WNW with a 9-second period. The combined swell energy is a solid moderate 378. What really makes it special is the wind: glassy, dead calm. That’s a major positive for clean surf. The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions”, and it’s the best we’ll see for a while. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so keep that in mind.
After that, things get messy. Saturday the 25th shows a bigger 7ft swell from the WNW with a long 11-second period, pushing the combined energy to a strong 1176. But it’s accompanied by light rain, and while the wind is cross-offshore and clean, the forecast is marginal with questionable tide. That’s a big iffy one, and the swell is getting up there for beginners.
The rest of the window is a write-off for decent surf. Strong cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions dominate from Sunday the 26th right through to the end of the month. The swell gets huge on Monday the 27th with 10ft and combined energy over 1400, but with a fresh cross-onshore and lumpy mess, that’s only for the brave or the kite surfers. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those days.
There’s a flicker of hope on Friday the 31st of July with a 5ft WNW swell, light offshore winds, and clean conditions, but it’s not a standout compared to the 24th. And then it’s back to poor conditions as we head into August.
So, for the whole 16-day run, the best on offer is that glassy Friday morning on the 24th. Don’t hold your breath for the rest.
Rusty.
