Alright, let's get into it. This is the outlook for the coming weeks from Kilcummin Harbour.
Overall, it's a bit of a mixed bag and a waiting game. The start of the period is a bit messy and not really delivering the goods. The real standout is shaping up to be Thursday morning, July 9th. We've got a clean, 4ft swell rolling in from the west with a period of 9 seconds, light offshore winds from the SSW, and the whole setup is looking glassy and clean. The wave energy is moderate (263), but the conditions are going to make it surfable and fun. Another good shout is Wednesday morning, July 8th. Same sort of deal – a 4ft west swell with a 9-second period, light offshore breeze, and clean conditions. It’s a touch smaller on Thursday but the wind is better.
Now, for the grizzly details. Monday, July 6th is a write-off. The swell is there at 6ft from the west, but the cross-off winds and marginal tide spots are making it a mess. Tuesday, July 7th is similar, with the afternoon turning into a choppy cross-shore mess. Wednesday afternoon, July 8th, it goes glassy but the wind switches to a light cross-shore, so the quality drops off.
From Friday, July 10th onwards, it's mostly poor. We see onshore winds (NNW) pick up and the swell drops significantly from Saturday and Sunday, with waves barely 2ft and the energy levels dropping to just 64 and 47. That small, weak swell combined with onshore and cross-onshore winds means no go. There’s a tiny glimmer of hope on Tuesday morning, July 14th, with glassy conditions and a small 3ft west swell, but the energy is low (138) and it’s just ordinary.
Then things get a bit wild but not in a good way. On Saturday, July 18th, we get a rapid increase in swell from the WNW, hitting 7ft by the afternoon with a short, weak 7-second period. But the winds are cranking – up to 25 mph onshore, making it a total mess. The combined energy climbs over 400 but with that wind, it’s not for paddle surfing. Honestly, with that strong cross-onshore wind and a beach-and-reef setup, it’s looking more like it’s for the kite surfers. It stays windy and choppy right through to the end of the period on Monday, July 20th, with the swell levels bumping up again but the winds just ruining it.
So, to sum it up: get your best sessions in on the 8th and 9th of July. After that, you're waiting a long time for something clean, and the forecast for late July isn't shaping up well at all. Conditions like this rarely stay completely dead for long, so keep an eye on it.
