The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Abereiddy over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a tough stretch. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off, with a solid run of poor surf conditions from Thursday 20th August right through to the end of the month. The winds are mostly cross or onshore, and the wave quality just isn’t there. The odd bit of swell pops up, but it’s short-period stuff, often messy, and not worth getting wet for. There’s a long gap here with nothing worthwhile on offer.
The first real flicker of hope comes on Sunday 30th August. The morning shows a 6ft swell from the SW with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (331). The wind is cross-offshore, which means the surface will be clean, but the swell is getting a bit big for a beginner spot, and the quality is still only marginal. The afternoon sees that swell jump to 8ft (836), but the wind picks up and it gets messy again.
The standout window, if you can call it that, is Monday 31st August. The morning expects a 10ft SW groundswell, period 8 seconds, and the wave energy is strong (950). The wind is cross-offshore, keeping it clean. However, at that size, this is only for experienced surfers – it’s going to be powerful and heavy. The swell direction is WSW, which is the optimum direction for this break. It’s the biggest, most energetic swell of the period, but it’s a long way out, so treat this one as promising but not locked in.
After that, the surf drops back and the winds turn onshore again, so that Monday morning is really the only one that stands out. It’s slim pickings, but sometimes that’s the way it goes.
Rusty.
