The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, I’m looking at the picture for Abereiddy and it’s a tough one. The whole sixteen-day window is a bit of a struggle, honestly. The wave energy is mostly low, and when we do get a pulse of size, the wind is just cruel. We're looking at a long stretch of very small, choppy, or messy conditions. There’s one brief window where things clean up, but the swell is tiny.
Right now, for the first few days from Friday 21st of August, it’s all cross-onshore breezes from the North-Northwest, pushing around some weak, short-period Northern windswell around 3ft to 3ft. The wind’s up around 12 to 15 mph, so it’s choppy and pretty average. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting between 75 and 96. Not worth getting wet if you ask me.
Moving into Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd, the swell drops right off to barely 1.0ft. Even though it’s a long-period 14-15 second groundswell from the Southwest, the energy is just gone (energy values of 31-63). The wind is still from the North-Northeast, keeping things messy. You’d be sitting on your board looking at nothing.
Monday 24th of August brings a little hope. The wind goes light and offshore from the East-Southeast (9 mph), cleaning things right up. The swell is still only 1.0ft, but that long-period Southwest groundswell (14 seconds) is there, and the energy bumps back to 53. It’s clean, but it’s tiny. For a beginner on a foamie, it might be a fun ankle-snapper if you’re desperate. For everyone else, it’s a paddle and a tan.
Tuesday 25th morning is weird. We get a strong offshore from the East-Southeast at 25 mph. The wave faces will be glassy, but with a 1.0ft Southwest groundswell (13 seconds), you won’t be able to paddle into anything. The wind is so strong you’ll get blown out to sea. The energy is a measly 31. Forget it. Tuesday afternoon through Thursday 27th sees a tiny 0.3ft leftover swell with mostly clean, cross-offshore winds, but it’s just not surfable.
Then on Friday 28th of August, a new Southwest swell fills in. The height jumps to 4ft Friday morning and 5ft by the afternoon. The period is a short, weak 7 seconds, but the combined energy finally feels alive at 136, then 237. The wind, though... it’s cross-onshore from the North and West at 12-15 mph, so it’ll be choppy and bumpy.
Saturday 29th is the biggest day of the period, but it’s a cruel joke. Swell height hits 8ft from the West-Southwest, with energy values up at 581. But the period is just 7-8 seconds, making it a raw, lumpy windswell. The wind is a moderate cross-shore breeze at 15 mph, leaving a cross-chop on the surface. At 8ft with short period and moderate wind, this is a mess. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
From Sunday 30th August onwards, the swell backs off again. We get a little pulse on the 30th and 31st, with 4ft to 4ft swell (energy 119-199), but the wind is either fresh onshore or cross-offshore. It’s not clean enough to call a standout.
The Pick: Honestly, there isn’t one single standout day. If I had to point you at something, it’s Monday 24th of August. The waves will be tiny (1.0ft), but the wind will be light and offshore from the East-Southeast, making it glassy clean. It is only for the absolute beginner or someone wanting a flat-water paddle in the (Wales) sunshine. The longer-period Southwest groundswell (14 seconds) will have some push, but it’s so small it’ll barely break.
Otherwise, my advice is to sit this one out. The forecasts can change, but right now, Abereiddy is a no-go for a proper surf.
Rusty.
