The Lowdown
Alright, let me take a look at what we’ve got for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a pretty grim stretch for Abereiddy. The whole 16-day window is a write-off, with barely a session worth paddling out for. The first real chance of anything even close to surfable doesn’t come around until Wednesday, 26th August, but it’s a long way off and the conditions are still ordinary.
Let’s get into it. Up until that Wednesday morning, it’s all poor surf conditions. The wind is almost always cross-onshore or onshore, choppy and lumpy, and the swell is either too small or messy. There’s a modest pulse of energy on Wednesday, 19th August, with swell around 5ft to 6ft from the WSW, but the wind is howling from the same direction at 22 mph, making it a rough, lumpy mess. The combined energy hits 315 (moderate wave energy), but with that fresh cross-onshore breeze, it’s not worth a look.
The long gap stretches from now until the 26th, with no decent recommendations. Then on Wednesday morning, 26th August, we finally get a tiny window. The wind swings to a light SSW breeze at 9 mph, blowing cross-offshore, which cleans things up. The swell is 4ft from the SW, with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 176 (moderate wave energy). The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and the score is only a 1 out of 10. It’s small, and the period is short, so don’t expect much push. For a beginner spot, this is about as flat as it gets.
After that, it’s right back to poor conditions. The rest of the week and into September shows nothing but onshore winds and choppy seas. There’s a bigger pulse on Friday, 28th August, with swell hitting 6ft from the SW and a period of 9 seconds, and combined energy jumping to 639 (strong wave energy). But the wind is cross-onshore or cross-shore, ruining any chance of clean lines. That swell is too big for beginners anyway, and with the wind messing it up, it’s only for the keenest experts.
Water temperature is around 63°F, which is about normal for the time of year, so no wetsuit drama.
Honestly, this is a classic blank run. Abereiddy is a fairly exposed spot, but it’s not delivering. The forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
