Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Abereiddy’s got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it ain’t looking like the greatest run of surf we’ve ever seen, and we’ve got a real quiet spell to get through first.
The first bit of half-decent energy doesn't show up until around July 6th, but even then it’s pretty weak. We start off with some small 3ft swell from the WSW on Monday the 6th, but it’s coming in with a messy cross-shore wind. The combined energy is low at 45, and it’s just not doing anything for us. The water temperature is sitting at about 61°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
For the next few days, it’s a case of waiting. Tuesday through to Thursday, the 7th to the 9th, the swell drops right off. We’re talking tiny 0.3ft – 1ft stuff, and the few glassy moments on the 8th and 9th mornings are more for a paddle than a proper surf. The combined energy drops right down into single digits, so there’s just nothing to ride.
Friday the 10th afternoon sees a bit of a lift, with the swell pushing up to 3ft, but it’s coming from the north with a moderate cross-onshore breeze, making for a choppy surface. The energy creeps up to 82, which is still weak overall, and the quality is just not there.
The whole run through the second week is pretty ordinary, to be honest. The wind stays strong and onshore or cross-shore, and the swell directions jump around a lot. There’s a period from the 13th to the 15th where the swell sits around 2ft – 3ft, and the wind does turn cross-offshore at times on the mornings, which will clean things up a bit, but the waves just don’t have any punch. The combined energy stays in the 40s, which is weak.
Looking further out, around July 17th we see a little 2ft swell from the SW with a longer period of 6 seconds and a light wind, but the swell is small and the direction is cross-on. Then July 20th has a promising 0.3ft swell with a very long period of 18 seconds, but again, so small it’s barely a ripple.
Honestly, the standout isn’t really a standout at all – there’s no single day where everything clicks. If I had to pick one, the morning of Monday July 13th has clean conditions with a cross-offshore breeze and a 2ft swell from the NE, but it’s still small and the energy is weak (42). It’s the best of a quiet bunch.
Crowds are possible here at Abereiddy, but with surf this small and poor, I doubt many will be out.
So, a long dry spell with no real quality on the cards. Let’s hope the charts change. Keep an eye out, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
