Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a rough start. The first solid recommendation doesn’t come until Friday 17th July morning. So we’re looking at a gap of nearly five days with nothing worth paddling out for. Those first few mornings are all showing poor surf conditions, with the wind mostly cross or cross-onshore and the swell tiny and weak. The onshore breezes are just messing up what little bump there is.

Friday 17th July is the only real standout in the whole period. It’s not a world-beater, but it’s the best we’ve got. We’re looking at Abereiddy with a clean, glassy morning. The swell is coming from the SW at about 3 ft with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak (80), so it’s not going to be powerful, but the wind is glassy, and that’s a massive plus. For a beginner-friendly spot, this is your window. The water temp is sitting at 61°F, which is about normal for the time of year, so no nasty surprises there.

After that brief moment of hope, we’re back into the doldrums. The rest of the week and into the next looks poor. The wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is either too small or completely wind-affected. The combined energy values are all under 100, so it’s weak stuff.

There’s a bit of a pulse on Tuesday 21st July morning with a 5 ft swell from the WSW from a period of 6 seconds, and the energy ticks up to 139. But the wind is a gentle cross-onshore, and the conditions are still described as poor. It’s just not clean enough to get excited about.

Then on Wednesday 22nd July, the swell really picks up. We’re talking 7 ft in the morning and 8 ft in the afternoon from the WSW, with combined energy readings of 522 and 620 – that’s strong wave energy. But before you grab your board, listen: the wind is cross-onshore both sessions, and the description says poor surf conditions. At that size, with onshore wind, it’s going to be a messy, lumpy, closed-out mess. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s not appealing. Honestly, with that setup, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The wind is just too wrong for us.

The rest of the run into the final week is a write-off. Tiny swell, onshore winds, and very weak energy. The 25th of July, for example, has a 0.3 ft swell with a 12-second period, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 22 mph. That’s not surfable.

To sum it up: if you’re desperate for a paddle, Friday 17th July morning at Abereiddy is your only real shot. Get it while it’s glassy. After that, walk away and let the forecast change.

Rusty.
