The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get one thing straight from the jump: we’ve got a blank run on our hands. The next 16 days offer nothing that’s really worth paddling out for. The only break in the forecast is Abereiddy, and it’s a consistent dud through the whole period.
Right now, through Sunday the 19th and into Monday the 20th, the swell is tiny, mostly under 2 ft, with a choppy cross-onshore wind. The energy is weak (25), and the direction is coming from the north, which is bad news for a spot that needs a good WSW swell. Monday morning has a bit of 2 ft north swell, but it’s cross-shore and messy. Tuesday the 21st is the same story – 3 ft north swell, moderate cross-onshore wind, still poor.
By Wednesday the 22nd, the wind picks up to 19 mph, and the swell bumps up to 3 ft, but it’s lumpy and fresh cross-onshore. The energy is still low (70). Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are pretty much the same story – tiny, weak, and onshore. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
We get a tiny shift on Saturday the 25th with a bit of offshore wind from the WNW, but the swell is basically flat (0.3 ft). The energy is just 9. It’s a tease.
The next week doesn’t get any better. On Sunday the 26th, the swell gets a little bigger, hitting 4 ft in the morning and 5 ft in the afternoon, but it’s coming from the WSW with a fresh cross-onshore wind. The afternoon energy jumps to 169, but the wind is going to chop it up badly. Monday the 27th has a brief moment of onshore wind, but the swell is dropping back to 3 ft. The afternoon is gentle cross-onshore, but still tiny.
The only real standout – and I use that word loosely – comes right at the end. On Thursday the 31st of July and into the 1st of August, we finally get a *cross-offshore* wind from the east. The swell is small, 2 ft to 3 ft, coming from the WSW with a short period, but the wind will be clean. The energy is pathetic (21-33), but the surface will be clean. It’s the best of a bad lot. For a beginner, those tiny, clean waves might be okay, but it’s not gonna get a surfer’s heart pumping.
The long-range into the 2nd and 3rd of August is a write-off with strong cross-shore winds and rain. Basically, the whole 16-day window is a bust. The setup is more interesting for a kiteboarder than a paddle surfer on those days with a bit of wind and swell. We’ll see if the forecasts change, but for now, it’s a blank.
Rusty.
