Table - best surf conditions forecast for Freshwater West over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Freshwater West.
First up, the water is running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 63°F.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a pretty grim stretch for this exposed beach and reef setup. The pickings are incredibly slim, and we’ve got a long, drawn-out period of flat to tiny surf ahead. The first real suggestion of anything surfable doesn’t really appear until Tuesday the 14th, and even then, it’s just “surfable but very ordinary.”
The swell energy is weak for the most part, staying under 100 for the first week. We finally see a moderate spike in energy on the 21st and 22nd, with combined energy readings hitting 221 and 240 on the 21st, and then jumping to a strong 907 and 1121 on the 22nd. That’s the biggest pulse of the forecast, with a 5ft to 10ft swell from the W. But here’s the kicker: the wind is all wrong. For those days, it’s a cross to cross-onshore breeze, making it choppy and ugly. At 8ft to 10ft, it’s expert territory anyway, and with the wind on it, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The only session that shows a bit of promise, and it’s a very low bar, is the afternoon of Wednesday the 15th. We get a tiny 1.0ft glassy period with a WSW swell. The period is short at 9 seconds, but the glassy conditions are a major positive. Even then, the score is a zero, so it’s not going to be a classic.
For the rest of the month, it’s a mix of poor surf conditions and onshore wind. The 16th afternoon has a tiny 2ft clean wave, but it’s barely a ripple. The 20th sees a 3ft swell, but the wind is a cross-off or cross, keeping it from being clean. The swells in the second week are small, messy, and generally wind-affected.
Right now, there’s no standout day. The best you can hope for is a window of clean, glassy conditions on the 15th, but it’s tiny. The big swell on the 22nd is a beast, but it’s a blown-out mess for experts only. Keep your expectations low and check back, because the forecasts can change.
Rusty.
