The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here.
First off, I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a tough stretch for Freshwater West. We’re looking at a long, dry spell of poor conditions that starts right now and runs for a solid two weeks. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until the 2nd of September. That’s a gap of over a week and a half with nothing but messy, choppy, and blown-out surf. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re staring at the flatness.
The overall pattern is pretty grim. For the next ten days, it’s a constant battle against onshore and cross-shore winds. The swell is small and weak, with energy readings barely cracking triple digits (109 on the 19th, 383 on the 20th, 297 on the 20th afternoon). Most of the time, the combined energy is under 100, which is just weak. A couple of cleaner days pop up around the 22nd and 23rd with light winds, but the swell is tiny – only 1.0 ft to 1 ft, so it’s barely a ripple. The 26th and 27th see a bit more size (5 ft), but it’s cross-on and choppy again. The 31st brings a spike in energy (899) with a 6 ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy.
Now, the standout. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only thing worth paddling out for. On Wednesday the 2nd of September, the morning shows a 6 ft swell from the west with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a moderate 348. The wind is light from the SSE – a gentle breeze – and it’s cross-shore, which means the surf will be a bit lumpy but rideable. The real gem is the afternoon session on the 2nd. The wind drops to a glassy calm, the swell is 5 ft from the west, and the energy is 240. It’s described as “glassy” and “expect good surf conditions.” This is the only window where the conditions actually line up. The swell is a bit short-period (7 seconds), so it’s not going to have that long, walling power, but it will be clean and fun. The direction is from the west, which is the optimum direction for this spot.
For that one afternoon on the 2nd, if you can get out, you’ll find clean, waist-to-chest high waves. The glassy conditions mean the face will be smooth. It’s a consistent spot, so you can expect waves to come through regularly. Crowds are possible, but with the drought, it might be quieter. Just keep in mind, 5 ft is a bit much for absolute beginners, but it’s fine for anyone with a bit of experience.
After that, it’s back to the junk. The 3rd of September is a write-off again.
So, to sum it up: don’t waste your time until the 2nd of September. The afternoon of the 2nd is your only shot. It’s a late call, but it’s the best we’ve got. Other than that, you’re better off checking the forecast again in a week.
Rusty out.
