The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up, 'cause it's a bit of a bleak picture for the next couple of weeks here at Freshwater West. We've got a run of poor conditions that stretches for days, so you'll need to be patient. The water's sitting at 64°F with a touch of extra warmth compared to the norm, but that's about the only mild thing going on.
The problem is a persistent run of onshore and cross-shore winds that are just wrecking the surface. The first bit of real hope doesn't pop up until the morning of the 25th of August. That Tuesday morning gives us a rare moment of clean surf with a light breeze, but the swell is tiny at 0.7ft from the SSW, and the energy is weak (47). It's surfable, but only just. You'd be on a longboard or a foiler, and the conditions are very ordinary. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so at least it's clean, but don't expect much push.
Things get a bit more interesting toward the end of the month. The morning of the 28th of August, a Friday, sees a bigger 7ft WSW swell rolling in, with gentle onshore wind. The combined energy jumps to 894, which is a solid push. The problem is the wind is directly onshore, so it's going to be a messy, lumpy battle. The guidance calls it marginal, and I'd say that's fair. It's the biggest swell on offer, but the quality is a major question mark. For that reason, I can't say it's a standout.
The only other blip on the radar is the morning of the 30th of August, a Sunday. There's a 7ft SW swell with 338 energy, but again, it's got a cross-onshore wind. The afternoon sees that swell bump to 8ft with 688 energy, but it's directly onshore. It's a lot of water moving, but it'll be a washing machine. This is expert territory at that size, and with the wind, it's a full-on battle.
Honestly, if you're looking for a clean, fun wave, there's nothing in the 16-day window that screams "go". The consistent conditions are poor. The 25th of August morning is the only truly clean window, but it's tiny. The 28th and 30th have size, but the wind is a killer. It's a tough outlook for the West. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don't hold your breath.
