Table - best surf conditions forecast for Freshwater West over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, hard look at what’s coming up for Freshwater West. I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a lean stretch ahead. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off, with barely a ripple. We’re looking at a long, dry spell from Saturday the 11th right through to the end of the week, with nothing but tiny, weak swell and mostly clean but useless conditions. The energy is barely there, with combined swell readings often in the 10-50 range, which is just gutless. It’s the kind of period where you’re better off checking the wind forecast for kites than paddling out.
The first real flicker of hope doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 22nd, when the swell finally bumps up a little, but it’s still compromised by nasty cross and onshore winds. The morning of the 22nd has a 4ft windswell from the west, period is a short 5 seconds, and it’s cross-shore, so it’s going to be messy. The energy reading hits 100, which is just barely moderate, but it’s not surfable.
The real standout, and the only one worth marking on your calendar, comes on Friday the 24th. We get a solid pulse of swell. The afternoon sees a 10ft swell from the west, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 1483, a proper strong dose of power. That’s a serious amount of water moving. The trouble is, the wind is cross-onshore from the west at 9 mph, which will be choppy. This is going to be a big, beefy, chunky day. 10ft is expert territory, no question. It’s going to be a wall of whitewater for most, and the onshore wind will only make it look more like a washing machine. The morning of the 24th sees a 7ft swell from the WSW, with a very short period of 6 seconds, and a combined energy of 378. That’s still big, but junky. The wind is light and onshore on the morning, but it’s still not clean.
The morning of Saturday the 25th is a drop-off, with 4ft from the WSW and a period of 9 seconds, but the cross-onshore wind from the WNW will keep it sloppy. After that, it dies back down to nothing.
So, for the whole 16-day window, the only day that even looks like a proper surf day is Friday the 24th, and that’s for experts only due to the size and the wind. The rest of the time, it’s a flat spell. Keep your eyes on the charts, but for now, don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
