Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break it down for the imperial crew.
Honestly, the first half of July is a total bust. From Friday the 3rd all the way through to Sunday the 12th, we’re looking at flat, weak, and messy surf. Swell heights are barely a foot or less, with energy numbers that are pathetic – starting around 204 and dropping to the low teens and single digits. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-on, so any tiny bump gets chopped up. The water temp is about 61°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, but that’s the only good news. No point paddling out.
Monday the 13th stays flat. You’ll see a long-period groundswell – 19 seconds – but it’s only 0.3 ft. That’s a whisper, not a wave.
Things get a pulse on Tuesday the 14th of July. We get about 2 ft from the west, period around 10-11 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 121 – that’s moderate. The morning is clean with an east-southeast cross-offshore breeze, and the afternoon sees offshore east winds. It’s small, but it’s rideable if you’re keen. Still, it’s not setting the world on fire.
Wednesday the 15th is similar – 2 ft from the west, period down to 9 seconds. The morning has a strong 28 mph offshore from the east-southeast, which cleans it up but makes paddling a battle. That wind is more for kite-surfing than paddle-surfing at Freshwater West. The afternoon turns cross-on and choppy again.
The one day that’s worth getting excited about – and I mean the only one – is Saturday the 18th of July. We get a solid west-southwest swell. Morning brings 8 ft at 8 seconds, with combined energy at 769 – that’s strong. The wind is light cross-shore from the northwest, so it’s not glassy but it’s workable. For experienced surfers, that’s a proper session. By the afternoon, it hits 10 ft with energy over 1200, but the wind goes cross-on from the west-northwest, so it’ll be heavy and chop-topped. That’s experts only. This is the standout, but it’s over two weeks out, so don’t book the day off just yet. The swell direction is off the optimum for Freshwater West (which wants pure west), but with that much energy, it’ll still pump. Crowds are possible, so plan ahead.
So, to sum it up: two weeks of nothing, a tiny mid-month window, and one big, heavy Saturday on the 18th for the big dogs.
Rusty.
