Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Freshwater West has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a quiet start, I won’t lie to you. We’ve got a stretch from Monday the 6th of July right through until the morning of Friday the 10th where it’s just flat or nearly flat, with barely a ripple to get excited about. The water temp’s sitting at 61°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it won’t be freezing if you’re just having a paddle.
The first real sniff of a wave comes on Friday the 10th in the morning. The ENE wind is blowing offshore, making it clean, but the swell is a tiny 2ft from the W with a short period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak (69). You could surf it, but it’s ordinary.
The weekend is a write-off. Saturday the 11th drops right off, and Sunday the 12th is tiny with a very long period 16 second swell from the SW that just won’t have any size behind it. That long-period stuff at a beach and reef spot like Freshwater West can be a bit tricky – tends to break too straight unless you know where to sit.
Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are more of the same – tiny, weak energy, though the wind stays clean. Nothing to plan a trip around.
Then, around the 16th of July, we start to see a pulse. On Thursday the 16th morning, the swell jumps to 5ft from the SW with a short period of 6 seconds, and the energy is moderate (152). The wind is offshore from the E, so it’s clean, but the quality is described as very ordinary. By the afternoon, it’s pushing 5ft (214 combined energy), but a cross wind messes it up.
Now here’s the one you want to circle. Friday the 17th of July morning is the standout. We’ve got a clean 6ft swell from the WSW, light offshore wind from the E, and the combined energy is a solid 358. The conditions are expected to be good. It’s not huge, so it’s manageable for most, but the offshore breeze will have those lines clean. It’ll be a proper session. The afternoon gets blown out by a strong NNW cross-wind, so get out there early.
Saturday the 18th holds size (6ft-6ft from the SW), but the NNW wind is cross-shore all day, making it choppy and messy. That’s a kite day, not a paddle day, if you ask me.
Sunday the 19th drops back a bit (4ft-4ft) with a cross-off wind, still clean but ordinary.
The real magic is slated for the following week. Monday the 20th of July morning is a big one. The swell is 8ft from the WSW, period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a strong 929. The wind is cross-off from the NNE, and the report says expect very good surf conditions. That’s big for a beach and reef – it’s expert territory at that size. Watch the tide. The afternoon picks up to 10ft with a cross wind, so it'll be messy.
Tuesday the 21st of July morning is another cracker. Again 8ft from the W, cross-off wind from the SE, combined energy of 846, and expecting very good surf. Two mornings in a row with that much power and clean conditions. That’s the period for the experienced crew to lock in.
These long-range calls for the 20th and 21st look promising, but keep an eye on it – a lot can change in two weeks.
Rusty.
