The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’ve been staring at the charts, and it’s a bit of a tough one for Whitesand Bay. The whole 16-day window is basically a struggle. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak, or messy conditions. The first real chance to get wet doesn't show up until the 28th of August, and even then it’s a gamble. Before that, from the 21st right through to the 27th, it’s mostly gutless—tiny swells, bad wind directions, and pretty much no quality. A few days in there, like the 22nd and 23rd, have clean-looking conditions, but the swell is barely 1ft with a weird long period that just won't wrap in properly. The combined energy is weak (39 to 107), so you’re not going anywhere.
The first thing that even looks like a pulse comes on the 28th of August in the afternoon. We get a bit of a lift to 6ft from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds. The wind swings onshore, which is a killer, but the energy bumps up to 277 (moderate). It’s better than the nothing we’ve had, but it’s a messy, onshore deal.
The real event, if you can call it one, lands on Saturday the 29th of August. We’re looking at 8ft from the WSW, with 8 seconds of period. That’s a proper swell size, but it’s a beach break, and with that period it’s likely to be a bit fat and crumbly. The combined energy hits 621 (strong), so there’s some grunt in the water. But the wind is cross-on and choppy in the afternoon. This is definitely expert territory at 8ft; beginners should stay well clear. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit drama there.
That Saturday is the standout, but it’s not a classic. The wind is messy, and the swell direction from the WSW is right on the optimum for the spot, so it’s a bit of a shame the wind isn’t cooperating. It’s a “go if you’re desperate” kind of day. After that, it fades back into tiny, weak energy for the first week of September, with a few clean but flat mornings that are good for nothing but a paddle. The 4th of September has clean offshore wind from the ENE, but with 1ft and a 14-second period, it’s a glassy lake, not a surf.
So, if you’re an expert looking for a punch, the 29th is your only real shot. The rest of the window is a write-off. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
