The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – looking at the next 16 days at Whitesand Bay, it’s a tough stretch. Every single session in the forecast is rated as poor surf conditions. There’s nothing good on offer right from the start.
We kick off on Sunday the 16th of August with a weak 1 ft swell from the WSW, period a short 7 seconds, giving us a combined energy of only 13 – barely a ripple. The wind is cross-onshore and it's choppy. It doesn’t get any better into Monday the 17th: a little bump in height but still weak energy in the 60s for the morning, and the period drops to 6 seconds. It’s all cross-onshore and messy.
Tuesday the 18th sees a slight bump to 4 ft in the morning, with moderate combined energy of 102, but the period is still a weak 6 seconds and the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. Wednesday the 19th brings the first notable swell height: 5 ft in the morning (186 energy) and hitting 6 ft by the afternoon (284 energy). But the wind goes onshore and then strong cross-onshore, so it’s lumpy and ugly. Thursday the 20th is similar – 5 ft (231 energy) but chopped up.
By Friday the 21st it drops back to 3 ft or less, with weak energy. The wind turns cross-shore, but it’s still not clean. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd offer some cleaner conditions with cross-offshore winds, but the swell is tiny: 1 ft to 2 ft at best. That long-period 15-second groundswell on Saturday morning (82 energy) looks pretty on paper but the height is nothing. That pattern of tiny, clean but unrideable surf continues right through Monday the 25th.
The last few days of the month see a re-emergence of swell. Thursday the 27th of August has 5 ft (235 energy) but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. Friday the 28th has 5 ft onshore and windy, then Saturday the 29th afternoon jumps to 8 ft from the SW with a period of 9 seconds and a huge combined energy of 922. The problem is the wind is a strong 25 mph onshore. That’s kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing. Sunday the 30th has near-gale force winds and 6-6 ft of messy onshore swell.
Honestly, there is not a single standout session here for a surfer. The closest we get to a decent-sized groundswell is churned up by brutal winds. For the time of year, the water temp is 62°F – that’s normal, about average. But the surf just isn’t happening. For now, keep the board in the car and hope the forecasts change. That blank run is normal for this spot when the wind is wrong.
Rusty.
