Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whitesand Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright, let's look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it's a pretty bare cupboard. We're looking at a long stretch of flat and messy conditions.
The first real chance of anything worth paddling out for is a pocket of energy that arrives a long way off, around the 21st of July. The only break that gets a mention through this whole period is Whitesand Bay. It's a fairly exposed, beginner-friendly spot that's fairly consistent, but it's going to need a lot more love from the ocean than it's getting.
The water temperature right now is around 61°, which is practically bang on average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The whole first week and a half is a complete write-off. From the 10th right through to the 21st of July, the swell is tiny, generally under 2 feet, and the wind is mostly a cross-off or a cross-breeze, but often it's a fresh 15-18 mph breeze that will just mess up any hope of a clean face. The combined wave energy is pathetic, mostly double-digit numbers (39, 25, 1, etc.), which is about as weak as it gets. There's just nothing to work with.
Now, the 22nd of July is where it gets a little bit interesting, but don't get your hopes up too high. On the Wednesday morning, we see a pulse of 5 feet swell from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 173 (moderate wave energy), which is the best we'll see. The wind is light and cross-off from the SE, making for clean, glassy conditions. This is the standout of the whole outlook. It's the only time the forecast mentions "surfable waves". It's not huge, but for a beginner spot, that's a fun, rideable size. The afternoon sees a bit more wind and a drop in energy, but the morning is the window.
The 23rd brings a strong 25 mph breeze from the SE, which will batter the surface, and the 25th of July sees a return of bigger, but onshore, choppy conditions with 4 feet of messy WSW swell and a fresh 18 mph SW wind. That last weekend is a no-go.
So, to be blunt: we have one real window. The morning of the 22nd of July at Whitesand Bay. It’s a long way off, so take it with a pinch of salt, but it's the only light in a very dark tunnel. The rest of the time, you're looking at a long, flat spell that's more suited for a stroll than a surf.
Rusty.
