The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Whitesand Bay has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – this is a pretty grim run. The pattern is just blown out or tiny for most of the period, with only a couple of very brief windows that look promising.
Starting now and heading into next week, it’s a write-off. We’ve got wind coming from the wrong direction or just way too strong, smashing up the surface. On Tuesday the 18th, Wednesday the 19th, and Thursday the 20th, it’s all cross-onshore or onshore slop, with swell between 3 ft and 5 ft, but the combined energy is weak to moderate, and the period is short at 6-7 seconds. Just messy, choppy conditions. Not worth paddling out for.
We do see a little window of cleaner conditions for Friday the 21st morning with some light cross-offshore winds and a tiny 2 ft swell, but that’s barely a ripple. The weekend goes quiet, with swell dropping to just 1 ft. There’s even a glimpse of a very long-period 15-second groundswell on Saturday the 22nd morning, but it’s only 1 ft with a strong cross-offshore wind – too small to do anything with, and that period can make beach breaks straighten out.
Now, the first half of the next week is still flat as a pancake. There is a gap of several days with basically no surf. On Tuesday the 25th, things start to look a little more alive. The swell picks up to 4 ft in the morning and 5 ft in the afternoon, with a clean, cross-offshore wind. The energy is moderate to strong. The period is short (6-8 seconds), but the wind is good, so the surface will be clean. That afternoon session on the 25th is one of the better looks we get, but it’s not a standout by any means.
Then we’re back into onshore junk on Wednesday and Thursday the 26th and 27th. The next real highlight pops up on Saturday the 29th of August. We get a solid 7 ft swell in the morning, and 6 ft in the afternoon, both from the WSW. The combined energy is strong, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore. That’s the best condition we’ll see, with clean, lined-up faces. However, at 7 ft, this is getting into the territory that’s too big for beginners. It’s gonna be a fun session for the more experienced crew. Crowds are possible here though, so expect some company.
The very end of the run, on Monday the 31st of August, sees the swell ramp up to 7 ft in the morning and 10 ft in the afternoon, with moderate cross-offshore and cross-shore winds. The energy is very strong, and the period is 6-8 seconds. That 10 ft afternoon is big size and heavy energy – expert territory only, and only if the tide lines up. The quality is still described as marginal.
Mostly though, for the next two weeks, it’s a disappointing outlook. For a consistent beach-break style setup, the poor wind and chop during the big swells makes this look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing in many of the sessions.
Overall, the only period I’d really look at is the clean window on the 29th. It’s the closest thing to a proper surf we’ve got.
Stay tuned, Rusty.
