The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for our little stretch of coast.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a pretty grim picture. We’ve got a long run of unrideable, messy, and blown-out conditions. The guiding wind and swell just don’t line up for a quality wave for the vast majority of the time. There are long gaps with nothing good to report, especially from now through the first week. The entire stretch from the start (Wednesday 19th) right through to the last day (Thursday 3rd September) is practically all poor surf, with the winds from the N, NW, SSW, and WSW just tearing everything apart. The breaks are mostly exposed, so we get the full brunt of the chop. For most of those days, the swell energy is weak (55 to 309, in the moderate range at best) but is completely ruined by strong onshore and cross-shore winds of 12 to 31 mph. It’s a total write-off for anything resembling a smooth ride.
There is a tiny glimmer on the very fringes, but it’s a genuine long shot. If you’re desperate, the only period that even registers a "not completely awful" is the late morning/afternoon of Saturday the 29th of August. The swell jumps up to a solid 6 ft from the WSW, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy of all swells directed here is moderate (297). But crucially, the wind drops to a light 9 mph from the NE, blowing cross-offshore. This cleans things up nicely. The pick of the entire outlook is Whitesand Bay on Saturday afternoon, the 29th. It’s the only time you’ll find a clean surface. The wave will be a little lumpy but rideable for a beginner on the lower end of the size scale. Since it’s a “beginner” spot, waist-high slop is what you want.
Then, bam, it’s back to total chaos again. The next day (Sunday 30th), the wind cranks back up from the NNW at 22 mph, turning the sea into a washing machine. The swell climbs to over 6 ft (7 ft to 8 ft), which is way too much for beginners, and with the wind, it’s a total mess. Even the “expect good surf conditions” call for the 29th only managed a 2 out of 10 on the scale. So, the whole period is barren, but that Saturday afternoon is the absolute best on offer. It’s not saying much, but it’s all we’ve got.
Stay patient, mates. It tends not to stay this hopeless for long.
