The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Whitesand Bay. This is a pretty quiet stretch for the next 16 days, to be honest. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat, small, and messy conditions, with hardly a moment that’s worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting around 61°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first half of the outlook is a real write-off. From Monday July 13th right through to about Saturday July 25th, it’s mostly tiny dribbles of swell – we’re talking 0.3ft to 1.0ft at best, with short periods and weak combined energy usually under 100 (23, 39, 81). The wind is mostly cross or cross-off from the north, which keeps things clean, but with that little swell there’s simply nothing to ride. You’d be floating around waiting for a bump that never comes.
Things get a tiny bit more interesting toward the end of the window, but it’s still not good. On Saturday July 25th, we finally see a bump in the numbers: the morning is a write-off with strong onshore wind from the west at 35 km/h, but by the afternoon the wind swings light onshore from the WSW and the swell pushes up to 3ft from the west, with a period of 11 seconds and combined energy of 253 (moderate). That’s the biggest swell of the whole period, but unfortunately the wind is onshore, and the wave comment says “poor surf conditions.” So it’s likely going to be a bit messy.
Sunday July 26th morning sees 3ft from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds and energy of 161, but it’s cross-on from the SSW at 25 km/h, so choppy. The Sunday afternoon pushes 3ft again but with a strong cross shore breeze, making it lumpy. Monday July 27th is more of the same: 3ft in the morning but cross-on and choppy, dropping off in the afternoon. Tuesday July 28th finishes things off with 2ft to 3ft, but it’s cross-on from the southwest with light to moderate breeze, so still not clean.
There is no standout day here. If I had to pick the least bad option, it’d be the afternoon of Saturday July 25th— 3ft at 11 seconds from the west, with light onshore wind. But honestly, it’s still not a good wave. The period is moderate, the direction is okay for the spot (optimum is WSW), but the onshore wind will mess up the shape. Whitesand Bay is a beginner-friendly, fairly exposed beach with a WSW exposure, so this swell direction is a match, but the quality just isn’t there.
Crowds are marked as “sometimes,” so on a normal day you’d expect a few people out, but with this forecast, I doubt many will bother. The consistency is “fairly consistent,” which means it usually gets some swell, but this 16-day window is a real dud.
Given the lack of quality and the persistent onshore or cross-shore wind, and the beach setup, this stretch might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those days with a bit more wind.
So, plain and simple: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. Sometimes it just goes flat like this, and that’s normal for the area. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but for now, I’d leave the board at home.
