The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what Porth Ceriad has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a tough run ahead. The first ten days or so are looking pretty bleak. We’ve got a long, frustrating gap from now all the way through until the afternoon of Wednesday, the 26th of August, where there’s nothing really worth paddling out for. The swell just isn’t there. It’s tiny, weak stuff with barely any push – a lot of readings below 2ft and combined wave energy numbers mostly in the single digits or teens. There’s some clean offshore wind here and there, but with no swell, it’s just a flat, pretty ocean.
Then, finally, things start to rumble to life. On Wednesday afternoon, the 26th, the swell jumps to 8ft from the SW with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 481 – that’s a proper kick of power, but with that strong cross-off breeze at 16 mph, it’s going to be a bit raw and only for the experienced. It’s still a bit of a dicey call, with marginal conditions. Thursday morning, the 27th, gets even bigger, with 8ft of WSW swell and that energy number roaring up to 1006. That’s a lot of water moving, and the period is still a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a lumpy, powerful beast. With the fresh cross-off breeze from the NW at 19 mph, this is expert territory only, and honestly, it looks like a better day for the kite crew than paddle surfers at this exposed beach.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is the afternoon of Sunday, the 30th of August. We’ve got a nice-looking south-west swell at 7ft, with a period of 7 seconds, and the wind is set to be a clean, moderate offshore from the north at 12 mph. That offshore wind will groom that swell into some clean, hollow lines, and the combined energy of 335 is solid. This is your best chance for a proper session, though that 7ft is pushing it for beginners. It’s promising, but it’s still a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.
After that, it drops off again into early September with smaller, less organised swell and more onshore wind. There’s a little glimmer on Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, with 4ft of SW swell and light cross-off wind, but the wave quality is described as just "ordinary."
So, to sum it up: a long flat spell, a couple of wild and woolly days for experts only, and one real shot at some clean, offshore waves on Sunday afternoon, the 30th of August. That’s your pick of the 16 days.
Rusty.
