The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next 16 days for Porth Ceriad.

Truth be told, mate, it’s a pretty grim run. There’s a massive gap at the start with no real surf to speak of. From now until the end of August, it’s all tiny, weak dribble – nothing breaking over 0.7ft, and the energy is barely registering (16 for the combined energy). The winds are messy, mostly cross or onshore, and the water is a whopping 66°F right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. It feels like a bath out there, but there’s nothing to ride.

The first faint glimmer of hope comes on Friday, August 28. The morning’s a write-off with a strong 30 km/h cross-onshore wind, but the afternoon glass off is a little beauty. The swell jumps to 3ft from the SW with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy hits 149 – that’s moderate, a real sign of life. The wind goes glassy, so the surface will be clean. It’s just a surfable wave, but nothing special.

If you’ve got a bit of patience, the highlight of the whole outlook is Friday, September 4. The afternoon session is the best we’re going to see. Swell builds to 6ft from the SW, with a period of 6 seconds – that’s short period, so it’s a bit choppy in the water, but the combined energy is a solid 282, which is strong. The wind is a clean 15 km/h cross-offshore from the NW, so the face will be smooth. The water temp is back to normal by then, and the break is exposed to the SW swell, which is right on the money. At 6ft, it’s getting into the fun zone, but it’s a bit too much for beginners. The crowd here is often, so expect some company.

The morning of the 4th is also clean, with 5ft, but the wind is a bit stronger. The afternoon is the pick.

Before that, there’s a pulse on Saturday, August 30, with 6ft from the W, but the wind is a messy cross-on or cross-shore, so it’s a lumpy, bumpy mess. Not worth it.

After the 4th, it all drops off again into tiny, wind-blown junk. September 6 is a total write-off with near gale winds.

So, the standout is Friday afternoon, September 4 at Porth Ceriad. It’s clean, it’s got some punch, and the direction is perfect. Get on it early.

Rusty.
