The Lowdown

Alright, folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Porth Ceriad. I’ve got to be straight with you—this one’s a tough watch for a while. There’s a real dry spell to start, so don’t be in a rush to get your wetsuit on.

We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions right through the end of August and into the first day of September. The first sniff of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Thursday morning, the 27th of August, and even then it’s pretty ordinary with waves around 2ft out of the southwest. The wind is glassy though, so if you’re desperate for a dribble, it’ll be clean. But honestly, it’s not much to write home about.

The real standout window begins to show promise on Wednesday the 2nd of September. That afternoon, the swell kicks up to a solid 8ft from the west-southwest, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined swell energy is strong at 753, and with a light northerly offshore breeze, it’s going to be clean. This is the one to circle. The waves are going to have some push, but at 8ft, this is only for experienced surfers—beginners should sit this one out. The swell direction from the west-southwest is a good match for the break’s preferred southwest swell, and the offshore wind means real quality. Crowds are often an issue here, so expect company.

Before that, Thursday the 3rd of September morning sees more manageable 6ft swell from the west-southwest, but with a lighter cross-off breeze and a period of 6 seconds, it’s less powerful. The combined energy is moderate at 179. It’s surfable, but nothing special.

The water temperature is sitting at 66°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—over 5 degrees above average, so that’s a real treat. You’ll be comfortable in a spring suit.

So, the bottom line: the first week and a half is a washout. The best of it is that Wednesday afternoon, September 2nd, with the 8ft west-southwest swell and clean offshore wind. That’s your standout. After that, Thursday and Friday have some smaller, ordinary waves, but nothing that’ll blow your mind.

Stay patient, and keep an eye on the sky. Forecasts can change.
