The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Porth Ceriad over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch.
The pattern for this whole period is grim. There’s a long, dry gap right from the start. We’re looking at nothing but tiny, poor surf conditions for days on end. From Sunday the 19th all the way through to the morning of Saturday the 26th of July, there’s not a single wave worth paddling for. That’s a full week of flat, weak, or just plain messy ocean. You’d be better off waxing your board just to look at it.
The first real bump in the road comes on Sunday the 26th of July. The morning shows a bit of swell pushing in, 3ft from the southwest, but it’s short period at 6 seconds and the wind is a fresh cross-shore breeze. The combined energy is only 52 (weak), and the water is going to be lumpy with cross-chop. It’s not a surfer’s wave. The afternoon gets a little bigger, 5ft from the southwest, but the period drops to 5 seconds, making it even more of a mess. The energy is a bit higher at 115 (moderate), but the wind is still cross-shore creating chop. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Monday the 27th of July is a little cleaner, with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the swell has dropped right back to 2ft and 1ft. The energy is weak (21 and 10). It’s clean, but there’s hardly any wave to ride.
The rest of the outlook into early August is a total write-off. We’re talking tiny bumps, onshore winds, and poor conditions. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The best of a very bad bunch is the afternoon of the 26th of July, but I can’t in good faith call it a standout. The swell is 5ft from the southwest, but it’s short-period and choppy. It’s the only time the energy gets into the moderate range (115), but the quality is poor. There’s nothing here for a beginner, and even an expert won’t find much joy. Crowds are often a problem here, but I doubt many will show up for this.
So, to sum it up: we’ve got a quiet, flat start that lasts over a week, then a short, messy pulse that doesn’t deliver. This is a tough one, lads. Keep your eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
