Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is one of those tough outlooks for Porth Ceriad. The whole 16-day window is virtually a write-off for any decent surf, so we are looking at a long, flat spell with nothing worth paddling out for.
Right now and for the next two weeks, it’s going to be a struggle. The first real sniff of action doesn’t show up until Saturday, the 18th of July. Before that, we’ve got almost two full weeks where the swell is tiny, the winds are messy, and the wave energy is either zero or in the single digits. There’s a few days with weak energy readings like 17 (Friday morning, 3rd July) or 55 (Saturday afternoon, 4th July), but even then, it’s poor quality with fresh cross-onshore winds ruining any shape. You’d be fighting whitewash and chop.
The water temperature anomaly at this break is 4° warmer than normal. With a reading of 64°F, that’s very unusual for the time of year – the water is feeling like a warm bath compared to what you’d expect.
Now, the one and only standout comes on Saturday morning, the 18th of July. Finally, we get some life. Porth Ceriad picks up a clean 5ft swell from the southwest, and with a period of 8 seconds, it’s short-period but has some push. The combined energy jumps to 269 (moderate wave energy) – that’s the biggest number we’ve seen all outlook. Winds are from the northeast at just 3 mph, which is a light offshore breeze, so it’ll be clean with only small ripples. This is for intermediate to experienced surfers – 5ft is fine for most, but not a beginner wave. The only concern is that it may attract a crowd – this spot is listed as “often” crowded, so expect company. It’s an exposed break, and the swell direction from the SW matches the optimum swell direction for Porth Ceriad, so it should wrap in nicely.
Saturday afternoon drops off a bit. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the SW, but the energy climbs to 385. However, the wind swings west at 6 mph, going cross-shore, which will put some light chop on the face. Still surfable, but the morning is the real window.
That’s it, folks. A long dry spell with one morning that looks worth setting the alarm for. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, because things can change, but right now, the 18th of July is the only game in town.
Rusty.
