The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, looking at the next couple of weeks for Porth Ceriad.
Honestly, mate, it’s a bit of a tough stretch for Porth Ceriad. The opening of the window is a write-off. It’s going to be a long wait. The first real possibility of getting wet doesn’t show up until Thursday the 27th of August. Even then, the morning is pretty gnarly with a 7ft swell that’s too powerful and messy for a beginner-friendly spot like this. That’s nearly 8 feet, and with the period short at 6 seconds, it’s going to be a washing machine. The combined swell energy is a solid 366, so there’s plenty of power but none of the finesse.
The standout window, the only one worth getting hyped about, comes on the afternoon of Thursday the 27th of August. The wind drops to a perfect glassy calm. The swell drops back to a much more manageable 6ft, still coming from the SW. The energy is still moderate (237) but with that glassy surface, it’ll clean right up. There might be a bit of size for a beginner break, but for a competent surfer, it’s the only time the stars align. It’s not a long-lived event, though, as the wind swings offshore again for Friday morning, dropping the swell right back down.
The rest of the forecast? A whole lot of nothing. After that brief Thursday afternoon window, it’s back to small, weak, and mostly blown-out or wind-affected surf for the entire first week of September. You’re looking at a sea of 1ft to 4ft with poor wind. There’s a glimmer on Tuesday the 1st of September morning with a 4ft west swell and clean winds, but the energy is weak (64) and the period is short at 5 seconds. Not worth a special trip.
So, the bottom line is: one grand day to target if you can get out on Thursday the 27th of August in the afternoon. It’ll be glassy and clean. The rest is a waiting game. The water is a warm 67°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit when you do finally paddle out.
Stay stoked, but don’t hold your breath. This is Rusty, signing off.
