The Lowdown
Well, folks, it’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. Looking at the whole 16-day window, the honest truth is there’s not a single good surf option on offer for Porth Ceriad. The forecast is a long, dusty stretch of flat, weak, and messy conditions. The first few days are a write-off with tiny swell and onshore or cross-shore winds, and that pattern just never lets up.
From Monday 17 August right through the end of the month, the swell barely gets a pulse. We see a small bump on Wednesday 19 August with a 4ft WSW swell, but the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore, making it lumpy and ugly – not worth paddling out for. The energy readings are mostly in the double digits, like 13 (weak) on the 17th, or 90 and 184 on the 19th, which is moderate but completely blown out. There’s a brief moment Thursday 20 August with clean offshore winds, but the swell is only 2ft and 1ft – barely a ripple. The whole first week is a no-go.
The second week doesn’t get any better. The swell stays tiny, with heights of 0.3ft to 2ft, and the longer-period stuff (13 to 15 seconds) shows up 21 August onward, but it’s so small it’s irrelevant. The water temperature is 67°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than normal – that’s very unusual for this time of year, and it’s already notable. But the waves? Nada. There’s a little bump on 30 August with a 6ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-shore and the energy is 224 (moderate), so it’s messy and not clean.
All in all, this is a blank run. Porth Ceriad is a consistent spot, but it’s going through a real dry spell. The only thing I can say is that it tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change, so keep your fingers crossed. For now, leave the board at home.
