The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Porth Ceriad.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough one. There’s a big ol’ gap right at the start with nothing worth paddling out for. From Saturday the 22nd of August, right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at tiny, weak swells and mostly poor conditions. It’s a real dry spell, with the waves just not showing up. That run of quiet days stretches all the way to the end of August.
The first sign of anything that might be rideable is on Thursday the 27th of August in the afternoon. Wind is light and cross-shore, and the swell bumps up to 7ft from the WSW. The combined wave energy is moderate at 295, but it’s a short period swell, only 6 seconds, and the forecast isn't great. It’s a marginal call and not really a standout for a proper session.
Friday the 28th of August, the morning has some clean waves with a 2ft SW swell and a cross-offshore breeze, but it’s a poor wave comment. The combined energy is weak at 41. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary.
The most interesting thing in the whole outlook is early September. On Wednesday the 2nd of September, we get a real pulse of energy. The afternoon sees a 6ft swell from the SW with a period of 9 seconds and a massive combined energy of 731. That’s a strong, powerful swell. But the wind is onshore from the SSW, which is a shame. The wave comment is poor. It’s too big for beginners, and with the onshore wind, it’ll be a messy, blown-out affair. This is really only for the experts who don’t mind a battle.
By Thursday morning the 3rd of September, the swell hits 7ft from the SW with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a very strong 1368. That’s a lot of water moving. But the wind is a near gale from the SSE, creating a cross-onshore bluster. The forecast says “blown out.” This is not a day for a standard surfboard; the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The last chance of the run comes on Friday the 4th of September. The morning brings a clean 3ft SW swell with a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE. The combined energy is moderate at 145. The wave comment is "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions". It’s clean, but the swell is short-period at 8 seconds and a bit weak. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s not a day that’ll get the heart racing.
So, if you’re desperate for a paddle, the standouts are the 2nd and 3rd of September for size, but the wind is a killer. The cleanest option is the morning of the 4th of September. Other than that, it’s a long wait for very little reward.
Rusty.
