The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast is a bit of a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell. The first real surfable day isn’t until the 30th, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. You’ll be waiting over a week for anything worth paddling out for.
Let’s start with the only spot on the menu, Porth Ceriad. This is a beginner-friendly, exposed spot that works best with a south-west swell. The water temp is sitting at 67°, which is a massive 6° above normal for the time of year – that’s very unusual, feels like a warm bath, but unfortunately, it’s not helping the waves.
The first few days are a washout. From Thursday the 20th through to Wednesday the 27th, we’re looking at tiny 0.3ft to 2ft swell with weak energy (mostly under 30 on the scale). Winds are mostly offshore, so it’s clean, but there’s just no power. On Monday the 24th afternoon, it’s glassy but still flat. You’re just bobbing around.
Things get a bit more interesting around Friday the 28th afternoon. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the south-west, with moderate energy (113), but the wind shifts to a cross-onshore, making it choppy. Not great.
Saturday the 29th morning sees a 7ft west-south-west swell with a solid 394 energy reading – that’s strong energy. But the period is a short 7 seconds, and the wind is a fresh cross-shore, so it’ll be lumpy and messy. This is too big for beginners and only really for experts if you’re brave, but the wind is ruining any chance of quality. Honestly, with that wind and chop, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The best on offer, and the only thing I’d call a standout, is Sunday the 30th morning. We get a glassy session with a 3ft west-south-west swell. The energy is weak (68), but the wind is glassy – completely calm. The waves are surfable, but the conditions are ordinary. It’s the cleanest we’ll see, but don’t expect bombs. The break is consistent, but crowds are likely here.
After that, it’s back to small, weak surf right through to the 4th of September. The 3rd of September afternoon brings a 6ft south-west swell with strong energy (313), and a gentle offshore wind, so it’s clean. But the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit of a close-out mess. It’s marginal.
So, there you have it. A long, flat spell with one redeeming glassy morning on the 30th. The forecasts can change, but for now, keep your expectations low.
Rusty.
