The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on the cards for Porth Ceriad over the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it's a bit of a slow burn. For the first week and a bit, you're not going to find much to get excited about. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.3ft to 2ft, and whilst we get some clean, offshore mornings, there's just no energy behind it. The combined energy values barely tickle the 50s (51), and most days are well below that. Thursday the 26th of August afternoon shows a slight pulse to 4ft from the SW (period 7 seconds), and the energy kicks up to 182, but the comment says it's "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – it just doesn't have the quality we're after.
There's a real gap here. We're looking at a full stretch from the start of the period right through to the very end of August and into the beginning of September with nothing recommended. It's not until Thursday the 3rd of September that something finally catches the eye.
That Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon is your standout. The swell jumps to 6ft from the NW, and with a period of 6 seconds the energy ramps up to 282. The wind is a light WNW breeze, coming cross-offshore which will keep the face clean. The guidance says this spot is exposed to a SW swell, but the NW direction for this one is actually pretty decent – it'll wrap in and produce some fun waves. The water temp is a notable 67°F, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can get away with a spring suit. This is a beginner-friendly spot that's fairly consistent, but keep in mind crowds are often here. For that Thursday afternoon, it's your best bet, but remember it's a long-range call so keep your hopes tempered.
Before that, Wednesday the 2nd of September morning has a clean 4ft from the WSW with offshore winds (15 mph) but the energy is only 90, so it's just okay, nothing special. The real action is that Thursday afternoon.
Over the weekend of the 29th and 30th of August, the mornings are glassy with small 1ft to 4ft swell, but the quality is still very ordinary. There's just no consistency in the quality.
So, bottom line: you're looking at a whole lot of flat and poor conditions until the 3rd of September. Keep an eye on that Thursday afternoon, but otherwise, it's a waiting game.
