The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – we’ve got a proper dry spell coming up for Porth Ceriad. The 16-day outlook is a tough one, with barely anything worth paddling out for. There’s a big blank run from now until the very end of the window. The water temp at the start is sitting at 66°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, almost like the sea has forgotten what season it is.
Right, let’s walk through it. The whole first week from Saturday the 22nd of August right through to Monday the 31st of August is a write-off. Day after day of tiny, wind-affected drivel. Swells are puny, often around 0.3ft to 0.7ft with poor wind directions. The energy is pathetic, mostly under 25. There are some glassy moments on Wednesday the 26th afternoon, but with a 0.7ft swell from the SSW, it’s just a flat, oily lake – no push. Thursday the 27th gets a little bump in size to 3ft in the morning, but that’s with a fresh cross-onshore wind from the SSE at 19 mph turning it into a lumpy mess. By the afternoon, the swell hits 5ft from the SW and energy climbs to 200, but the wind is still cross-onshore and the conditions are poor. Friday the 28th sees the biggest swell of the whole stretch at 7ft from the WSW with energy at 312 – but it’s cross-onshore again, so you’re looking at choppy, gutless walls. That size is getting into expert-only territory, but honestly, with the wind, it’s not worth it.
We then hit another gap of flat, poor conditions right through to Tuesday the 1st of September. Finally, on Wednesday the 2nd of September, there’s a glimmer. The morning shows 4ft from the SW with a 5-second period and light offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. The energy is just 54, but the winds are clean. This is the only session in the entire outlook where you might get a few weak, crumbly ones. It’s surfable, but just barely. The afternoon gets a bit taller at 5ft and energy at 102, but the wind goes cross-off from the NW, still clean, but the period is still short at 5 seconds – weak, fat waves. Thursday the 3rd has a 5ft swell from the SW (energy 176) but with light cross-shore winds, making it a messy, bumpy ride. After that, it fades back to tiny junk for the rest of the window.
So, if you’re desperate, the only true standout – if you can even call it that – is the Wednesday the 2nd of September morning at Porth Ceriad. It’s clean, has a bit of waist-high swell, and the winds are light offshore. It’s inconsistent and small, but it’s the best on offer. The rest? Save your petrol.
Rusty.
