The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here again. Let’s cut to the chase. These next couple of weeks at Porth Ceriad look pretty bleak for the most part. The water is running much warmer than usual for the season, at around 67°F, which is nice, but the surf just isn't there.
Tuesday afternoon (Aug 18) we're looking at a tiny 2ft SW swell, but the wind is blowing onshore from the WSW, making it bumpy and ugly.
Wednesday (Aug 19) is shot. Fresh cross-shore winds up to 19 mph and a lumpy, weak swell of 3ft. Not worth the drive.
Thursday (Aug 20) is the pick of a bad bunch early on. The morning is clean with a light cross-offshore wind and a 2ft SW swell. It’s ankle to knee high, but at least it looks nice. The afternoon gets a good offshore breeze from the N, but the swell drops off to 2ft. Still, it’s clean.
Then it all dies. From Friday (Aug 21) through Monday (Aug 24) we are flat. Completely flat. A tiny 0.5ft ripple with no energy. The wind is offshore, but there is literally nothing to surf. This is a long spell of nothing.
Tuesday (Aug 25) picks up a little to 2ft, but it has a terrible 4-second period, and the wind is onshore in the morning. Forget it.
Wednesday (Aug 26) is all storm. Strong onshore winds up to 28 mph and a messy 2ft of slop. This is a write-off.
Thursday (Aug 27) has a glassy morning, but the swell is only 1ft. It’s pretty but empty.
Friday (Aug 28) and Saturday (Aug 29) are more interesting. The swell climbs to 4-4ft, but the wind is screaming onshore or cross-shore at 25 mph. This will be a complete wall of whitewater. This is definitely a day for the kiteboarders, not the surfers.
Sunday (Aug 30) is more of the same—lumpy, cross-onshore winds with a 2ft swell. Poor.
Monday (Aug 31) afternoon is the first time the ocean shows some real life. The swell jumps to 6ft from the SW, with moderate energy. But the wind is still on it from the SW, making it choppy and hard to paddle into.
So, our one true standout is on Wednesday, September 2nd. The forecast shows a 4-4ft SW swell with a light offshore/cross-offshore wind in the afternoon. The energy gets a boost, and for the first time, the conditions finally line up. It’s going to be clean and have some push. It’s still a week out, so treat it as promising, not a guarantee, but it's the one to wait for.
Bottom line: this run is mostly a dud, so save your energy for that final day. This is Rusty, signing off.
