The Lowdown
Alright, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it, mate. Fishermans (Rhiw) is looking grim. This reef break is beginner-friendly, exposed to SW swell, and right now the water is a warm 65°F, about 4°F above normal for the time of year—pretty unusual, feels like a heatwave.
The first surf window opens up Monday, 17 August, but it’s tiny: 0.5ft SW swell at 5 seconds, with only 13 units of combined energy (weak). It’s clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, but there’s nothing to ride. The whole week stays poor. Tuesday brings 3ft WSW swell, 6 seconds, 71 energy, but the wind is cross-shore or cross-on, making it lumpy. Wednesday the 19th has a 4ft SW swell, but onshore wind at 22 mph makes it a mess. Thursday the 20th cleans up with offshore wind at 19 mph, but the swell drops to 2ft. The rest of the week through the 25th is mostly flat—0.3ft and near-zero energy, with a long gap from the 21st to the 24th.
We get a little bump on Tuesday, 25 August morning: 2ft SSW swell with a 3-second period, weak at 16 energy. The afternoon picks up to 3ft SW, but it’s cross-shore. The real chance, if you can call it that, comes on Friday, 28 August. We’ve got 4ft SW swell, 9 seconds, and 281 energy (moderate)—that’s the biggest pulse of the forecast. But the wind is onshore from the SSW at 12 mph, so it’s blown out. Then on Sunday, 30 August, we see 6ft SW, 6 seconds, 224 energy, but cross-on wind at 12 mph keeps it choppy. The first week of September fades into small, onshore slop.
Honestly, there’s no real standout. The 28th and 30th of August have the most size, but the wind kills it. The cleanest session might be the 20th morning with offshore wind, but at 2ft, you’ll be scratching for a wave. For a beginner reef, this is a long dry spell—forecasts can change, but right now, it’s pretty bleak. If you’re desperate, wait for the 28th, but don’t expect much.
Rusty.
