The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for your bit of coast. Alright, let’s be straight with you right off the bat: this is a rough stretch for the 16-day window. There’s nothing on the horizon that’s really worth paddling out for, and I mean nothing. That first record doesn’t even show up until the 14th of July, and even then, it’s a flat spell.
The only break on the radar is Fishermans (Rhiw), a reef setup that’s fairly consistent but it’s just not going to do a thing for you. The entire first week is a write-off. From Tuesday 14 July morning right through to Monday morning 27 July, the swell heights barely tickle 0.3 ft to 1 ft, with periods all over the shop – often short, weak, and just not shaping up. The combined energy is laughably low, often in the single digits (0, 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, 16). You’ll see a few glassy moments – like Friday 17 July morning with zero wind, or Tuesday 21 July morning with a light breeze – but with no swell, glassy conditions are just a pretty mirror. The water temperature is 64°F, which is a whopping 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, but it won’t help the waves.
The only real blip of energy comes way later, on Sunday 26 July, where the morning shows a 3 ft swell from the SW, but with a short period of 5 seconds and a combined energy of 46 (weak). That’s still poor surf. The wind is cross-off at 25 km/h, so it’d be clean, but the waves are too small and weak to do anything with. By Monday 27 July morning, there’s a 3 ft swell from the W, but with a 5-second period and moderate energy of 85 (still weak), and the wind is a fresh cross-shore at 35 km/h, making it lumpy and choppy – more kite-surfing territory than paddle surfing.
After that, it fades again. The 16-day window ends with nothing but tiny, poor-conditions surf. So, honestly, there’s not a single standout day. The best of a bad lot might be that Sunday 26 July morning, but even then, you’re looking at ankle-biters. This is one of those blank runs that’s normal for this area – forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board in the shed and maybe go for a swim.
Rusty.
