The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Fishermans (Rhiw) over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m looking at a pretty bleak picture overall. The 16-day window opens now, but there’s a long dry spell right up until the end of August. For over a week, the swell is tiny—dropping to 0.3 ft with long periods from the SW—but there’s just no push. The combined energy is barely there, with numbers like 15 or 10 (weak energy). It’s clean at times, with some glassy conditions on Monday the 24th morning, but you’d be bobbing around on next to nothing. That stretch from Tuesday the 18th right through to Monday the 31st is basically a write-off for any proper surfing. There are a few moments of offshore or cross-off wind, especially on Saturday the 22nd with a light offshore, but again, the swell is flat. It’s heartbreaking because the conditions look tidy, but the ocean just isn’t delivering.
Now, if you can wait, there’s a glimmer. The stand-out here, and I mean the only real option, comes on Tuesday the 1st of September morning. That’s a long way off, so take it with a pinch of salt, but the numbers are interesting. The swell bumps up to 8 ft from the WSW. That’s a big jump. Combined wave energy hits 742 (strong energy). The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s windswell, not a proper groundswell, but it’s got some grunt. The wind is cross-off from the NNW at 28 mph, which will clean it up, but that’s a fresh breeze. Still, the shape should be rideable. Just be aware, that 8 ft is pushing into expert territory—this isn’t one for the beginners. On Tuesday afternoon, it drops to 6 ft, still with clean cross-off wind, but the energy backs off to 256 (moderate energy).
The water at the start of the outlook was 65° with a 4° anomaly, so much warmer than normal for this time of year—that’s a pleasant surprise.
All in all, the first week and a half is a total flat spell. The only real shot is that Tuesday the 1st of September morning window. If it comes together, it’ll be the pick of the bunch, but for everything else, you’re better off leaving the board at home.
Rusty.
