Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a pretty quiet picture for Fishermans (Rhiw). The first week and a half is looking very flat. We’re talking about a real gap here. From Thursday the 9th right through to around Monday the 21st of July, there’s barely a ripple to get excited about. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with very weak energy. The combined swell energy barely gets into double figures, sitting at just 2 (2) on the Thursday morning, and that’s about as good as it gets for a while. You’ll see a few days with a long-period groundswell sneaking in, like Monday the 13th with a 19-second period, but the height is virtually nothing at 0.3ft, so it’s all show and no go. The water temperature is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 62°, which is about 3° above average, so that’s a nice little bonus for the summer.
The first real glimmer of hope, and I mean a glimmer, comes on Tuesday the 21st of July. The afternoon shows a slight bump up to 2ft from the SW, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy finally climbs to 35 (35), which is still very weak but at least it’s something. The wind is a cross-off from the NNW, so it’ll be clean. It’s not a standout, it’s just the first day that isn’t completely flat. Then on the 23rd of July, Thursday morning, we get a bit of a treat. The swell is still only 1ft from the SW, with a period of 5 seconds, but the wind goes glassy – that’s a major positive. The combined energy is 13 (13). It’s not going to light your world on fire, but for a summer session on a small, clean reef, it could be a fun little window. This is probably the best on offer, but keep your expectations in check. The consistency is “fairly consistent” here, so it tends to not stay flat for too long, but this run is a proper test of patience.
All in all, it’s a waiting game. The second week has a few small, clean windows, but nothing that’s going to have you calling in sick. Keep an eye on that glassy Thursday morning on the 23rd.
Rusty.
