The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. Looking at Fishermans (Rhiw), the next 16 days are a total dud. There’s no surf worth talking about for the bulk of the period. The first real suggestion is way out, and even then it’s weak. The water temp is about 64°F – that’s about 5°F warmer than usual, so the sea is unusually warm, but there’s no energy to ride.
From Wednesday 15 July afternoon: 0.3ft of swell from the SW, 16-second period, but the combined energy is a measly 12 – barely a ripple. Wind is cross-off, but the wave height is tiny. Thursday 16 July morning has a light offshore NNE wind at 3 mph, but still only 0.3ft and a 14-second period, energy down to 9. That’s the pattern – Friday through to the end of the month, it’s all 0.3ft or flat, with moderate to strong breezes kicking up chop.
There’s a gap of several days with no real surf. The first time we see anything above 0.3ft is on Sunday 26 July afternoon: a tiny 2ft SW swell with a 3-second period, energy only 8. That’s not rideable. Monday 27 July morning has a 3ft SW swell with a 35 mph cross-shore W wind, making it lumpy and messy. Monday afternoon has a 3ft SW swell with onshore SW wind – poor.
The best of the worst is around Tuesday 29 July afternoon: 4ft from the WSW, period of 5 seconds, energy at 89 – still weak. The wind is light cross-shore, so it’s not totally blown out, but that short period makes it fat and weak. Thursday 30 July morning has a glassy 3ft from the WSW with a 6-second period, 56 energy, and offshore NNE wind in the afternoon at 6 mph, giving clean 3ft SW swell, but the period is only 4 seconds. It’s small, weak, and short-period.
This area is just not firing. No standout, no solid swell. It’s a flat spell that’s pretty normal here, but it doesn’t mean it stays poor forever – forecasts can change, but right now, don’t bother.
