The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim overall. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple for most of the period. There’s a big gap here where I wouldn’t even bother paddling out. From the start right through to around the 26th of July, it’s a whole lot of nothing. We’re talking days of 0.3ft slop, if that. The wave energy is non-existent, with figures barely hitting double digits. For example, the combined energy on Tuesday afternoon the 14th is just 16, and it drops to near zero for days on end. There’s a stretch from about the 19th to the 25th where the energy is literally 0 or 1 out of the water. It’s a proper blank run.
The only spot we’ve got to look at is Fishermans (Rhiw). It’s a reef break, fairly consistent, and it’s meant for beginners. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s much warmer than normal, so you’ll be comfortable in a shorty or even a spring suit if you’re brave.
As for the surf, there’s a tiny glimmer late on. On Sunday the 27th of July, we get a bit of a pulse. The Tuesday morning the 28th is probably the pick of a bad bunch. We’re looking at a clean 1ft swell from the SW with a period of 6 seconds. It’s weak, with combined energy of just 13, but it’s glassy. The wind is light from the NW, which is offshore for this spot. That’s about as good as it gets. It’s small, gutless, and only really for a beginner to get a few knee-high rollers. Don’t get excited.
The Wednesday the 29th morning is similar, 1.0ft from the SW, clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but again, it’s tiny. Anything over 2ft doesn’t show up until the 26th, and even then it’s just 2ft and cross-shore wind, so it’s not going to be pretty.
Honestly, for the next two weeks, save your energy. The setup is so weak and the wind is mostly cross-off or cross-shore that it’s not even worth a look for a paddle. If you’re desperate, the 28th morning is your best bet for a tiny, glassy beginner wave. Otherwise, wait for the next forecast.
Rusty.
