The Lowdown
Alright, grab a cuppa, because I’ve been over the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a tough stretch for us here at Fishermans (Rhiw).
Right now, the water is sitting at 65°F which is a solid 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s properly weird, feels more like a holiday than a surf trip.
The outlook kicks off on Wednesday the 19th, but honestly, don’t get your hopes up. We’ve got a weak 3 ft swell from the SW, but it’s only packing 4 seconds of period and the wind is slamming straight onshore at 19 mph. The combined energy is a measly 26, and it’s just rain showers and poor surf. That’s the story for the next week or so. We’ve got a massive gap here with nothing really worth paddling out for. From Thursday the 20th all the way through to Wednesday the 26th, the swell is tiny – mostly 0.3 ft to 2 ft – with a mix of cross-off and cross-on winds. The few times the wind is offshore, like Sunday morning the 23rd with a gentle NNE breeze, the swell is just 0.3 ft with a 14-second period. That’s a long period, but with no energy (combined energy of just 8), it’s barely a ripple. This is a real blank run for the area.
Now, hold on. There is a glimmer of something on the horizon. On Thursday the 27th, things get interesting. The morning shows a 7 ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 6 seconds, making it a bit of a messy, lumpy beast. The wind is light from the SE, so it’s cross-shore. The combined energy jumps to 366, which is strong, but the surf quality is only marginal. Then, Thursday afternoon is the standout of the entire forecast. The swell drops to 6 ft, still from the SW, but the wind goes absolutely glassy – zero mph. That’s a major positive. The waves will be clean, even if the period is still short at 6 seconds. The combined energy is 237, so there’s a solid push. For a spot that’s been dead as a doornail, that afternoon session on the 27th is your best bet. Even the crowds are only “sometimes” an issue here, so you might get a few waves to yourself.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. From Friday the 28th all the way to the end of the forecast on the 3rd of September, we’re back to tiny, weak swells with onshore or cross-shore winds. There’s a brief flash of 4 ft from the W on the morning of the 1st of September, but the wind is cross-shore and the energy is a weak 64. Not worth the drive.
So, to wrap it up: the next 16 days are mostly a write-off for surf. Forget the first week. Your only real window is the afternoon of Thursday the 27th of August. Get out there while the glass is on and the energy is up. It's not perfect, but it's the best we’ve got.
Rusty.
