The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast for Fishermans (Rhiw) is a tough one. We’ve got a proper flat spell to sit through before any real hope shows up. Don’t bother paddling out for the first 12 days, because from the 17th of July right through to the 28th, it’s basically a desert. There’s nothing but tiny dribbles of 0.3ft to 2ft swell with poor energy, and the wind is mostly cross-off, which won’t do a thing for waves that aren't there. You’d be floating on a lake.
The only flicker of life comes right at the end of the month. On the morning of the 29th of July, we finally see some direction with a 5ft swell from the SW, period around 6 seconds, and a clean offshore wind from the NNE. The water temperature is sitting at 64°, which is a notable 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a very clear sign the sea is feeling more like summer than it should. The wave energy is moderate (141), and while it’s not epic, it’s surfable. The real standout, though, is the afternoon of the 29th. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the WSW, period still short at 7 seconds, but the energy climbs to 286 and the offshore wind from the N stays clean. That’s your best window – a genuine opportunity for a few fun ones.
The next morning, the 30th of July, brings a bigger 7ft swell from the NW with a 7-second period. That’s pushing into expert territory for size, and the energy is strong at 572. The wind is offshore from the NE, so it’ll be clean, but at that size, if you’re not confident on a reef, it’s a day to watch. After that, it drops off fast into the 31st and into August with onshore winds and weak dribble again.
So, to sum it up: the only real window to get wet is the 29th and maybe the morning of the 30th of July. The 29th afternoon is the pick of the lot – steady head-high waves, clean offshore breeze, and manageable energy. The rest is a waiting game. Don’t hold your breath for the first week and a half.
Rusty.
