The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming our way for Aberaeron over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it's a quiet stretch. The models are showing next to nothing in the way of proper surf for a good long while, so don't be holding your breath for any epic sessions just yet.
We’re kicking off with a real dud. Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th have tiny waves, maybe 1ft to 3ft, but the wind is all wrong – onshore and cross-onshore, making a mess of things. The swell energy is weak, reading just 13 (combined energy). Water temps are sitting at 68°, which is 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that's very unusual, like a warm bath out there. But it's not doing us any favours for the surf.
This quiet pattern drags on through the rest of the week and into the next. We’ve got a stretch from Monday the 17th all the way through to Friday the 28th where there’s no real surf to recommend. The swell heights barely tickle 2ft most days, and when they do nudge up a bit, the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and uninviting. On Thursday the 20th, we see a bit more energy with the swell hitting 4ft and a combined energy of 127 (moderate), but that NW wind is cross-onshore, and the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s just lumpy and weak. Not worth paddling out for.
Things get a little interesting towards the end of the run, but it’s still borderline. Saturday the 29th shows a swell of 4ft from the NNW with a period of 6 seconds, combined energy of 121 (moderate). The wind is onshore from the WNW at 16 mph, so expect bumpy, blown-out conditions. It’s not great for a paddle board, but with that onshore wind and a beach-and-point setup, this could actually be a fun session for the kite surfers. The swell is big enough to get some rides in, and the wind will have plenty of push.
Really, the only faint glimmer for us surfers is on Friday the 28th of August. The swell picks up to 3ft from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds, and combined energy hits 118 (moderate). The wind is light cross-onshore from the WSW at just 6 mph, which is about as close to clean as we’re going to get. It’s not a standout by any means – it’s still pretty weak – but if you’re desperate and the break at Aberaeron is an inconsistent spot anyway, you might find a few crumbly little runners. Don’t expect much, but it’s the best of a bad lot.
Hang in there, crew. This is one of those blank runs that’s more normal for the area – forecasts can change, but right now, it’s looking like a waiting game.
Rusty.
