The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Aberaeron. The guidance tells me this spot is a beach and point setup, intermediate-level, and it likes a decent swell from the south-west. It’s one of those spots that can be a bit hit and miss, and it’s often got a few people around.
Right, the long and short of it is: the next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and there’s a big, long gap where you’d be better off doing something else. For the first week, from the 18th of August right through to the 31st, you’re looking at tiny, weak, and pretty much unsurfable waves. The swell is coming in from the west and north-west, but it’s just a dribble—0.7ft to 3ft, with periods as short as 4 seconds. The combined energy is negligible, staying under 100 (65 is the highest you’ll see), and the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s a choppy, messy mess. Forget about it. There’s a brief moment on the morning of the 21st where it’s glassy, but the swell is only 0.7ft, so it’s flat calm, not surfable. Then from the 22nd to the 31st, the swell is basically non-existent, with heights under 2ft and energy readings in the single or low double digits. That’s a solid 10-day stretch of nothing.
Now, hold on to your board, because after that long dry spell, things get a bit more interesting. On the 1st of September, the swell starts to show some life. Tuesday morning the 1st of September sees a 7ft swell from the west-south-west, with a combined energy of 485 (moderate energy). That’s a proper size, but the period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a short-period, messy windswell, and the wind is a strong cross-onshore, so it’s going to be blown out and messy. Tuesday afternoon is a bit smaller at 5ft, but still with that strong cross-onshore wind. Not great.
The real standout of the whole outlook is Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September. You’ve got a 6ft swell from the west-north-west, combined energy of 185 (still moderate). The wind is a gentle cross-offshore from the south, which is a good sign for clean conditions. This is the best of the bunch. The swell is overhead, but it’s a bit short-period (6 seconds), so it might not have the punch you’d hope for. For an intermediate, it’s a solid day. The afternoon sees a 5ft swell, but the wind swings back to a moderate cross-onshore, so the morning is the window.
If you’re an expert, you might be interested in that 7ft morning on the 1st of September, but the wind is a strong onshore, so it’s going to be a battle. The 6ft on the 2nd of September is the one to target. The water temperature is 68°F, which is 7° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a noticeably warmer paddle.
Signing off, Rusty.
