Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest, this is a tough one for Aberaeron. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and messy, with a long gap of nothing worth paddling out for. The first real surf we see is a long way off, so patience is the name of the game.
The outlook starts with a real dud. From Monday the 6th right through until Saturday the 18th of July, it’s basically a write-off. We’re looking at a solid two weeks of tiny, weak waves, with the combined swell energy barely reaching double digits – a measly 15 (weak energy) at best, and mostly just a few points. The wind is a problem too, mostly cross-on or onshore, chopping up what little bump there is. Don’t even bother with the board for this stretch.
There is a slight flicker of life on Saturday the 18th of July. The swell bumps up a little, with a combined energy of 56 (moderate wave energy) in the morning. We’re looking at a 3ft swell from the WNW, but it’s a short-period windswell at just 5 seconds. The wind is a fresh cross-onshore, so it’ll be lumpy and shifty. This is strictly for the hardcore who just need to get wet, not for a good wave.
The best of a bad bunch, if you can call it that, comes on Monday the 20th of July. The afternoon sees a 4ft swell from the WSW, still a short 5-second period, but the combined energy hits 57. It’s still a bit of a mess with a fresh cross-onshore breeze, but it’s the biggest swell of the whole period. For all the right reasons, this is the standout, but it’s a poor standout. The wave quality is poor, and it’s going to be choppy.
Given the persistent onshore winds and choppy conditions, especially from the 18th onwards, the beach and point setup at Aberaeron looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The waves are just too weak and poorly formed to get excited about.
Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
