Alright lads and lassies, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the surf picture for the next couple of weeks. I’ll level with you, it’s looking grim.
The whole 16-day window is a bust. We’re looking at a long, long stretch of flatness and small, weak junk. There's a massive gap in real surf from start to finish.
The Overall Picture
It’s a consistent story of no energy. The combined energy of all swells is stuck on weak numbers, barely making it out of single digits. The little bumps we see are short-period windswell – not the kind that gets you stoked.
Kicking off on Thursday, July 9th, there’s a tiny 0.6ft swell from the WSW, but with a light cross-onshore breeze. That’s a write-off. Friday the 10th has a small 1ft pulse from the NNW on the Friday afternoon, but the wind is light cross-onshore. Still terrible.
Saturday the 11th gives us a clean cross-offshore wind on the Saturday morning, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft from the west with a 7-second period. It would be clean, but you couldn't even ride a ripple that size. The Saturday afternoon is messy with a moderate breeze.
From Sunday the 12th of July all the way to Wednesday the 23rd of July, it’s the same banging of the drum. Some mornings will be clean with cross-offshore ENE winds, but the swell is flat or stuck on 0.3ft. The combined energy numbers are almost all single digits.
There's a brief flash on Sunday the 19th of July in the afternoon where a 3ft pulse from the NNW bumps the combined energy up to 28, but it’s short-period (5 seconds) and the wind is a gentle cross-onshore, making it choppy. Not a standout.
The only session that looks interesting is Wednesday the 15th of July. The Wednesday morning has a true offshore wind from the east at 9 mph – that’s a major win for clean waves. But, the swell is still only 0.3ft from the west with a 16-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell, so the shape would be perfect at a point or reef, but with barely any height, it’s a no-show here at the beach and point.
The Verdict
Honestly, save the wax for another time. There are zero standout sessions in this 16-day forecast. The swell energy is too weak, and the few windows of good wind are wasted on flat water. This is a natural blank run for Aberaeron. The water temp is a warm 63°F, which is about 5°F warmer than average for the season, so a flat-water paddle might be worth it for the warmth alone. But for surfing? Don’t bother. Not for at least ten days.
Rusty.
