The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – we’ve got a long, flat stretch ahead. The next two weeks are a real struggle for anyone wanting to paddle out at Emma Wood State Beach. The entire 16-day window is filled with tiny, weak swell and onshore or cross-onshore winds that just won’t let up. The water temperature is sitting at 70°, which is a massive 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you’ll be sweating in your wetsuit, or maybe just in boardshorts. The combined swell energy is weak, never getting above 200 for the first week, hanging around the 100-170 range, and even the slightly bigger pulses later on only reach 372 (moderate). Basically, it’s poor surf conditions every single day.
From Wednesday, August 19th, right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at ankle-to-knee high waves at best, with a long period swell from the SSW that’s just not wrapping in with any power. The wind is a constant issue – mostly a light to gentle breeze from the WSW, but it’s always cross-onshore or straight onshore, leaving the surface chopped or rippled. There’s no standout day, no window of clean conditions. The forecast confidence is high for the short term, and it’s just bad news.
There is a *slight* bump in energy around the 29th and 30th of August, with the swell height creeping up to 2 ft from the SSW, and the combined energy hitting 372 (moderate). The period is still a long 16-17 seconds, which is a groundswell, but it’s still too small and the wind remains cross-onshore, so it’s not going to offer anything rideable. The whole period is a blank. For a beach and reef setup, this is a poor run. It’s not looking like it’s going to turn around any time soon. If you’re desperate, maybe look at other spots, but here, the board stays in the car.
Rusty.
