The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Emma Wood State Beach.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half is looking pretty bleak. We're staring down the barrel of a long flat spell with only micro-swells and mostly cross-onshore winds messing things up. The water is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only good news. The combined energy of all swells is really weak, barely cracking 100 for most of the first week, so it's going to be a lot of staring at a flat ocean.
From Tuesday the 14th to through Thursday the 24th, it's just a grind. The swell is tiny, maybe 1ft to 3ft, and it's coming from the SSW or SW. Even when the wind is light and onshore, the wave quality is just "poor" or "marginal" at best. It's a beach and reef setup, so with that combined energy being so weak (often under 200), there's just no push. You'd be better off with a stand-up paddleboard or a kite, honestly.
The first real glimmer of hope, and I mean a glimmer, shows up on Saturday the 25th of July. The morning session is seeing a 3ft swell from the S, with a 13-second period. The combined energy jumps to 482 (moderate wave energy), which is the highest we've seen. The winds are cross-onshore from the WSW, so it won't be glassy, but it's the only thing that scores a "marginal" rating. It's not a standout by any stretch, but it's the best on offer in a very dry period. Sunday the 26th keeps that energy up (391) with a 3ft SSW swell, but again, messy cross-onshore wind.
So, if you're desperate, that Saturday morning (25th July) is your best bet. It's a small, weak south swell, but it's the only time the energy is enough to maybe create a few crumbly walls for a log. The rest of the 16 days? Honestly, don't waste the petrol. It's a long, flat run with a few days of marginal junk at the end. Hang tight, check back in a week.
Rusty.
