Table - best surf conditions forecast for Samoa Peninsula over the next 16 days.

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Samoa Peninsula.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off. The wind is just not playing ball. We’ve got a persistent cross-onshore flow, mostly from the N and NNW, and it’s chopping everything up. You’ll see some swell in the water – a mix of NW groundswell with a period of 8 seconds and some smaller SW pulses with a very long 18-second period – but the conditions are rating as "poor surf conditions" right through to the afternoon of Wednesday, July 16th. The wave energy is there, with combined energy values sitting between 391 and 915 (moderate energy), but it’s messy and unrideable for a good session with these winds.

We finally start to see a glimmer of hope around Thursday, July 17th. The morning session has a light NW offshore wind with a 6ft NW swell at 8 seconds. The wave energy picks up to a solid 900 (moderate to strong energy), and while the forecast is still calling it "marginal," having that offshore wind is a game-changer. This is the first time in a while it looks clean. The crowd factor is a "sometimes" issue here, so expect company if it’s looking good.

Now, if you can hold out, the real standout window starts on Saturday, July 19th. We’ve got a couple of days of solid NW swell pushing through 8ft to 10ft, with the period lengthening to 9 seconds by Saturday afternoon. The winds shift light and variable – even going cross-shore from the WSW on Saturday, which is a rare treat. The combined wave energy jumps into the strong category, hitting 1250 on Saturday morning and peaking at 1360 that afternoon. This is proper groundswell with decent period, which should line up well with the optimum NW direction for this break.

By Sunday, July 20th morning, the swell is still a chunky 8ft to 10ft, but the wind is a light and clean NW offshore at just 6 mph. This is the call of the forecast period. The energy is massive at 1377. Keep in mind, any wave over 8ft is really for experienced surfers only. If you’re a beginner, this is not your day. The break is a beach-and-reef setup, and with these strong, longer-period swells, you might find it better as a bank or point setup, but with the right tide, it should hold decent shape.

Looking at the very end of the run, on Wednesday, July 23rd, we’re into full-on 10ft NW swell at 9 seconds with energy readings over 1500 – very, very powerful. The wind is still a cross-onshore, though, so it's not as clean as the weekend. It'll be a test of skill for the brave lads out there.

The water temp is sitting at 53°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year by about 2°. So, if you’re paddling out on that Sunday, you’ll want a good hood and booties.

To sum it up: wait for the weekend of the 19th/20th of July. That Saturday afternoon and especially Sunday morning with the light offshore wind is your best bet for clean, powerful surf.

Rusty, signing off.
