The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the table for the Samoa Peninsula. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. This is one of those periods where you’ll be watching the ocean a lot more than you’re paddling out.

Right now, and for the first few days, it’s all pretty flat. We’re looking at tiny, weak windswell for the rest of this week and into the weekend. The swell energy is pretty weak, bouncing around in the low hundreds. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, which just tears those little waves apart. It’s a classic "leave your board in the car" situation.

There is a bit of a pulse around the morning of Friday, July 18th, with a clearer sky and some offshore wind from the NNW at 9 mph. The swell is still tiny at 3 ft from the WNW with a moderate energy reading of 701, but that offshore wind might give it some life for a short window. It’s still marginal, not the kind of thing you’d drive for.

Then things get genuinely interesting but also a handful. On Saturday, July 19th, the swell jumps up. Saturday morning sees a clean 7 ft swell from the NW, 9 seconds, with offshore wind from the NW at 6 mph. The energy is a strong 927. That’s a solid, powerful, clean-looking wave. But – and it’s a big but – that 7 ft is getting into the too-big-for-beginners zone. By Saturday afternoon, the wind swings and it gets messy. Sunday, July 20th is also worth a look with a 5 ft, 8-second NW swell and light offshore wind in the morning (energy at 625). This is the standout window. For a bigger-wave surfer looking for power, the morning of Saturday the 19th and the morning of Sunday the 20th are your best bets. The consistency is described as "fairly consistent" here, and the swell direction is exactly what this break wants – straight out of the NW. Just keep in mind those longer gaps between sets with a shorter period like that, but the power is there.

After that pulse, it drops right back off. The middle of the week (21st-24th) is back to tiny, poor conditions with light winds. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit surprises there.

Late in the month, from around the 25th of July onwards, we get another pulse of longer period, groundswell energy. It’s still very small (2 ft to 2 ft) but the periods get long – 20-24 seconds. That’s a very long-period groundswell. It’ll be clean with offshore winds, but that tiny size and super-long period means the waves will be very inconsistent, rolling in slow and fat. It’s the kind of day for a longboard and a whole lot of patience. Not really a standout, just a quiet change of pace.

So to sum it up: the real action, and the only standout, is the clean, powerful swell on Saturday morning July 19th and Sunday morning July 20th. A bit of a heavy window for the crew who like it big, but the conditions are there. The rest is a waiting game. The second week is mostly for the longboarders and the patient types.

Rusty.
