Alright folks, it’s your man Rusty with a long look at the Samoa Peninsula stretch. This is a frustrating one, to be honest. The whole 16-day window is mostly a write-off for quality. We’ve got a run of onshore and cross-onshore winds that just won’t let up, and the swell is all over the shop. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
Things kick off on Sunday the 5th of July. We see some NW swell at 6ft, but it’s a short-period 8-second thing, and the wind is cross-on from the west at 6 mph. That’s creating small wind ripples and the conditions are just marginal. The wave energy is moderate (571), but the whole day is a write-off.
Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th are more of the same—onshore winds and marginal surf. Tuesday morning does bring in a longer 11-second period, and the combined energy actually jumps to 845 (moderate-to-strong), but the 5ft swell is still battling onshore wind. It’s a tease. The swell stays poor all through Wednesday the 8th, dropping off to a tiny 2ft, even if the period is a crazy 18 seconds (groundswell). The wind is still ruining it.
We hit a real rough patch from Thursday the 9th of July. The wind kicks up to a moderate breeze, and the swell jumps back to 6ft and 6ft, but it’s short-period, choppy, and the guidance says it’s all poor. This onslaught of poor conditions stretches all the way through to midday on Saturday the 18th of July. That’s nine or ten days straight of “poor surf conditions” with a few “marginal” mornings mixed in. It’s a big, ugly gap for any proper surfing. The combined energy during this stretch hovers around 400-650, which is weak to moderate, and the swell direction is all over the place.
Finally, there is a slight flicker of hope. On the afternoon of Wednesday the 16th of July, we see a marginal session with the wind turning onshore from the NNW, a 3ft swell from the WNW with a long 18-second period, and the energy climbs to 793. Still not a standout, just the first thing in a long time that isn't completely terrible.
The closest we get to a real standout is a very distant prospect. Look at Sunday the 19th and heading into Monday the 20th of July. On Sunday, the 19th, the swell holds around 4ft from the WNW with an 11-second period, and the energy is solid at 765-829. The wind is still onshore or cross-onshore, but the reports say “marginal.” Then on Monday the 20th, the swell size jumps to 8ft from the NW. That’s a solid size, actually over 8ft for the experts, but the period is a short 8 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 886. The wind is still onshore from the NNW. This is the best we get in the whole 16 days, and it’s still compromised by the wind.
For beginners, that 8ft is way too much. For the experts, that Monday morning on the 20th is the only window where the swell size and energy are really pumping, but that onshore breeze will make it a lumpy, blown-out mess. It's a shame. For now, the setup looks more like it’s tuning up for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
There are no clean, glassy days in this forecast. None. It’s a grim run, but hey, the forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
