The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s not sugarcoat it. The next couple of weeks at Samoa Peninsula are looking pretty flat for a proper surf session. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing, then a few possibilities way down the line.

The first week is pretty much a write-off. From Saturday, the 22nd of August, right through the end of the month, the swell is tiny, mostly with poor surf conditions. The wind is nearly always cross-onshore, which is going to put a chop on everything. There’s a brief moment on Sunday afternoon, the 23rd, where the swell bumps up to 6ft from the NW, but with a short period of 7 seconds and a cross-onshore breeze, it’s gonna be a messy, lumpy mess. Not worth getting excited about.

We then hit a real dry spell. From Monday, the 24th, all the way through to Tuesday, the 1st of September, the combined energy is weak to moderate, and the wave comments are all "poor" or "marginal." It’s a frustrating gap if you’re looking for a wave.

Now, things start to get a bit more interesting come Thursday, the 3rd of September. The swell direction swings to the WNW, and we start seeing some size. Thursday morning, the 3rd, we’ve got 5ft from the WNW with a solid 10-second period, and the wind is offshore from the NW, so it’ll be clean. The combined energy is a moderate 547, so there’s some push. This is a highlight, but it’s still a bit of a gamble way out.

Then, the real potential standout is Saturday, the 5th of September. Saturday afternoon, the 5th, we’re looking at 10ft of NW swell, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a big, powerful swell, and the combined energy hits a massive 2010. The wind is offshore from the NNW, so it should be glassy. But listen, 10ft is big, wild stuff – not a day for beginners. This is expert territory, and it could be epic if the sandbars are right. That wave energy is off the charts. Sunday the 6th is still solid at 8ft from the NW with a longer 11-second period, and the morning looks clean with offshore wind, but the afternoon gets messy.

So, the bottom line: if you’ve got patience, keep your eye on the 3rd of September for a sneaky good session, and the 5th of September for the big one. The rest of the time? Might be better to wax the kiteboard, because the wind will be there, even if the waves aren't.

Rusty.
