The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it’s a rough start. For the first week, we’ve got a long stretch of marginal-to-poor conditions with a few brief flickers of hope. The main event doesn’t really kick in until the very end of the month, and even then, it’s messy.

The first real pulse comes in on Friday, July 18th, with a pulse of 6 ft NW swell, but the wind is cross-onshore and the period is a short, weak 8 seconds. That’s not gonna be pretty. Saturday morning, July 19th, has a similar 6 ft NW swell with light offshore NW wind, but again, the period is short at 8 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (837), but it’s just not shaping up well for a clean wave. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

The real standout is shaping up for Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd. We’ve got a clean, glassy session on the cards at Samoa Peninsula. The swell is only 2 ft from the SW, but the period is a long 14 seconds, and the wind is dead flat – glassy. The wave energy is light (294), but for a small, clean, long-period groundswell, that’s the best you’re gonna get. That’s the pick of the first week. It’s small, but it’ll be clean and fun for a longboard or a fish.

After that, it’s back to mush until the end of the month. The real juice shows up on Wednesday, July 29th, with a 7 ft NW swell. The wind is a light cross-onshore, but the period is still short at 8 seconds. The energy is strong (929), but with that short period and cross-onshore wind, it’s gonna be a bumpy, close-out mess. Then on Thursday, July 30th, we get a 8 ft NW swell, but the wind picks up to 12 mph cross-onshore, making it a choppy, messy affair. The wave energy is very strong (1093), but the conditions are poor. This is more for the kite crew than paddle surfers.

The biggest swell of the window hits on Friday, August 1st, with 8 ft NW swell and a 9-second period, but the wind is cross-onshore from the NNW at 9 mph. The energy is very strong (1175), but the conditions are marginal at best. The wind is a problem. The same goes for Saturday, August 2nd, with 8 ft NW swell, but the wind is onshore and the forecast is poor.

So, the bottom line: if you’re desperate for a paddle, the glassy Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd, is your only true clean window. The bigger swells at the end of the month are powerful but blown out. For a point break or reef, those long-period SW swells might have opened up, but for Samoa Peninsula, it’s a bit of a waiting game. The forecast can change, but right now, it’s a tough run.

Rusty.
