Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hapuna over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, hard look at what Hapuna is offering up over the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – this one's a bit of a heartbreaker.
Right off the bat, there’s nothing doing for the first few days. Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th are flat out a write-off. Tiny little 1 ft SW pulses, but they’re coming in at those really long 15-16 second intervals, and the combined swell energy is barely registering (120, dropping down to 80). The wind is cross-offshore, which is usually a good sign, but there's just no swell to push any shape into that sandbar. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride.
We finally get a bump of energy coming through on Tuesday the 14th. The combined energy jumps up to 298, wave height hits 2 ft from the W with a 16-second period. It’s still not big, but Tuesday afternoon is our one true standout in this entire forecast. The wind goes completely glassy. Zero. You’ll get a clean, glassy surface on a building swell. For a sandbar break that’s fairly exposed, that glassy condition is the absolute best-case scenario. The water temperature feels about average for this time of year, so no need for a thick suit.
Wednesday and Thursday see the swell hold around 3 ft from the west, with combined energy in the solid 300s. But the wind swings onshore and cross-onshore, messing with the surface. You get some rain showers and bumpy, rippled faces. Thursday afternoon cleans up again as the wind fades to a light cross-off, but the energy is already starting to drop off into the 200s. Friday is similar – clean and glassy at times, but the swell is fading fast, 2-2 ft.
After that, it’s a long, drawn-out fade. From Saturday the 18th all the way through to Monday the 27th, the wave heights dribble down from 2 ft to a pathetic 0.7 ft. The combined swell energy is just two-digit numbers (119, then 57, 30, 14…) – it’s weak. There are glassy windows in there for sure, but you’re looking at barely knee-high slop at best. There is a weird spike in period to 24 seconds on Wednesday the 22nd, but with only 0.7 ft of swell, that super long period doesn't mean a thing – you’d be waiting forever for a set that never comes. It’s frustratingly consistent in how inconsistent the quality is.
Honestly, your one and only chance to paddle out and have a decent time is Tuesday afternoon, the 14th. It won’t be big, but it’ll be the cleanest, most surfable session on offer. Beyond that, you might want to check if the kites are flying, because for paddle surfing, we are in a deep dry spell.
Rusty.
