Marshalls Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this stretch of the calendar is a tough one for waves at Marshalls. We’re looking at a 16-day window that starts with a bit of a letdown, but there’s a flicker of hope if you’re patient. The surf here is a reef break that’s inconsistent, so when it’s flat, it’s flat for a while. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no drama there.

The first real surf recommender kicks off on Thursday, 10 September. We’ve got a 3ft south-west swell rolling in with a loooong 17-second period – proper groundswell energy. The combined energy sits at 478 (moderate), which sounds decent, but the wind is a light cross-onshore from the SSE, so it’s a little bumpy. The conditions are poor, and the rating is low. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for. Thursday afternoon is a bit better: the wind swings to a light cross-shore from the west, but the swell is the same size and the period drops to 16 seconds. Still marginal.

Friday, 11 September, is more of the same: 3ft south-west swell, 16-second period, cross-onshore wind. The energy dips to 334 (moderate). It’s a no-go. Saturday, 12 September, drops to 2ft swell with a 14-second period, energy at 203 (weaker). Light cross-onshore wind in the morning, but it’s still poor. Sunday, 13 September, we get a 2ft swell and a 19-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell, but it’s only 2ft and the wind is onshore. The energy is 124 (weak). Not worth a session.

From Monday, 14 September, through to Tuesday, 22 September, the swell stays tiny – 1.0ft to 3ft – with periods ranging from 14 to 19 seconds. The energy mostly sits in the 100–300 range (weak to moderate). Winds are a mix of cross-onshore and onshore, with a few light breezes. The best you’ll get is a marginal “maybe” rating, but mostly it’s poor. The standout in this whole stretch is probably Thursday, 17 September, with a 2ft south-west swell, 15-second period, and a light cross-onshore wind in the morning. Energy is 334 (moderate). Still, the consistency is the issue – this break rarely pumps, and when it does, it’s not with any real power.

Now, the 21 September Monday morning picks up a bit: 3ft south-west swell, 17-second period, energy at 481 (moderate). But the wind is cross-onshore from the SSE, so it’s messy. The rest of the outlook through to 25 September is a mix of 2ft to 2ft swells, short to moderate periods, and mostly cross-onshore winds. It’s a dud.

If you’re a kite surfer, the beach setup here might be more interesting with the cross-onshore winds and the small chop, but for paddle surfing, it’s a waiting game. The forecast can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, the best session on offer is the 17 September morning – 2ft, 15-second period, light cross-onshore wind. Just don’t expect much. For a true standout, there isn’t one. The break is inconsistent, so a blank run like this is more normal for the area.
