The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Let’s get real about Toes Over for the next 16 days—it’s a tough outlook. The water’s warm at 70°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re just floating. But the waves? Mostly small and weak, with only a couple of brief moments that might get your heart pumping.

The first chance to even think about a surf is Wednesday, August 19th, in the morning. We’ve got a 2ft swell from the SSW with a super long 15-second period. The combined energy is 258 (moderate), and that long period adds some shape, but it’s marginal at best—tide conditions could be a pain. The wind’s light from the SSW at 6 mph, blowing onshore, but it’s light enough to keep the surface okay. This is a beach/jetty setup, and with that long period and tiny size, it’s pretty weak. Not a standout.

After that, it’s a real dry spell. From Thursday, August 20th, through to Saturday, August 29th, the surf is consistently poor. The swell drops to 1.0–2ft, energy stays weak (100–200 range), and the winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore. There are a few mornings—like Sunday, August 23rd, and Monday, August 24th—where the energy nudges up (207 and 238), but the swell’s still tiny with a long period, making it marginal and unreliable. Not worth the paddle.

Now, the best of the bunch comes on Saturday, August 29th, in the morning. We’ve got a 3ft SSW swell with a 17-second period and combined energy hitting 391 (moderate, but getting interesting). The wind is light from the SW at 6 mph, blowing onshore, but it’s clean. The swell direction is SSW, not quite the optimum SW, but close. The crowd at Toes Over is sometimes busy, so you might have some company. This is the only real standout, but it’s still marginal—tide could mess it up.

Sunday, August 30th, morning has a similar 3ft SSW swell with 15-second period and energy at 370, but the wind is a light cross-onshore from the S at 3 mph, putting a slight ripple on the surface. Again, marginal.

After that, the surf fades—Monday, August 31st, morning has 3ft and energy 285, but it’s onshore and marginal. Then it’s back to tiny, weak swells (1.0–2ft) through to Wednesday, September 3rd. The last few days are just poor.

So, if you’re itching, the best bet is the morning of Saturday, August 29th—that 3ft SSW swell with the long period and light wind might give you a few clean, though small, lines. The rest of the window is a wash. For beginners, it’s too small and weak; for experts, it’s not worth the effort. With these tiny waves, it’s more of a float session than a surf.

Rusty.
