The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. I’ve been staring at the charts for Toes Over, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth paddling for.
The main issue is that persistent onshore wind. It’s blowing right onto the beach from the SW for the vast majority of the next 16 days, and it’s just trashing any chance of clean surf. The water is a balmy 70° and feels much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a nice touch for a paddle, but not much else.
We start off with a flat spell that runs from Wednesday the 19th of August all the way through to the end of that week. The swell is tiny – 1ft to 2ft – and combined wave energy is weak, sitting between 108 and 245 (weak to moderate). The period is long, sometimes up to 16 to 19 seconds, but with that wind hitting it square on, it’s just a messy, blown-out dribble. The reports say “poor surf conditions” day after day. There’s just nothing to chase.
The next week, starting Monday the 24th of August, we see a slight uptick in energy, but it’s still marginal. The combined energy climbs into the 200s and 300s, hitting 342 on Tuesday the 25th and peaking at 350 on Saturday the 29th, but it’s all for nothing. The wind stays onshore, and the wave comment is still either “poor” or “marginal.” There’s a sneaky morning on the 29th with a light cross-onshore breeze and a 3ft SSW swell, but it’s not enough to save it. It’s a frustrating run of onshore slop.
The first week of September doesn’t offer much relief either. The swell stays small, the wind stays onshore, and the combined energy hovers in the 200s. The best we can say is that the period is still long, suggesting there’s energy out there, but it’s not making it to the beach clean. The only real standout, and I’m saying this with a heavy heart, is the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. You’ve got a 3ft SSW swell with a 15-second period, and for a moment, the wind goes glassy – just a slight air. That’s the only window in the whole 16 days where the wind might actually let you surf. The combined energy is 360 (moderate), which is the second-highest reading of the whole forecast. If you’re desperate, that’s your one chance. But with the onshore wind kicking back in by the afternoon, it’s a fleeting moment.
For the rest, it’s a washout. If you’re a beginner, these waves are small enough to be safe, but the quality is so poor it’s not worth the paddle. For the experts, there’s just nothing to get excited about. Given the persistent onshore wind and the beach/jetty setup, this whole period looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. I wouldn’t hold your breath – it tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, the ocean is telling us to take a week off.
Rusty.
