The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at Toes Over over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the start of this outlook is pretty grim. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions or at best marginal surf forecasts right through from Friday the 21st of August all the way into the early part of the following week. Small swells in the 1.0ft to 2ft range are about all we get, and nearly every session has onshore or cross-onshore wind messing things up. The water temp is sitting at 70°F, which is a full 4°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you might not even need your wetsuit.
Now, the first real standout doesn’t show its face until Saturday the 29th of August. That morning is the most promising window in the entire first week and a half. The swell nudges up to 3ft out of the SSW, with a 17-second period. That long-period groundswell will bring proper shaped waves, though it can break a bit too straight on a beach setup like this. But here’s the big deal: the wind is glassy – just a slight air. That means the surface will be clean as a whistle. The combined swell energy is sitting at 478 (moderate), so there’s enough juice to get a few decent rides. Keep an eye on the tide because conditions are still labeled “marginal” on that front, but it’s the best you’re gonna get. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so if you can get out early you might sidestep that.
Moving into the first few days of September, it’s more of the same – small, onshore, not worth your time for paddle surfing. The swell stays under 2ft through the 2nd of September.
The second standout comes later, on Friday the 4th of September. The morning shows a 3ft SSE swell with a 16-second period, and combined energy jumps to 836 (moderate to strong). The wind is light cross-onshore, which isn’t perfect, but it’s manageable. The swell is just about the biggest we see in the entire window. The next day, Saturday the 5th of September, isn’t bad either with 4ft to 4ft S swell in the morning, but it’s still cross-onshore. Still, these two days offer the most size and energy of the whole forecast if you can live with a little chop. This is still best for intermediate to advanced surfers – anything over 3ft can be a handful for beginners.
Honestly, if I’m calling it, Saturday morning the 29th of August is your best bet for clean, glassy conditions. The 4th and 5th of September offer more size but less polish. It’s a patchy outlook, but there are a couple of windows to scratch an itch.
Rusty.
