The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down for the imperial crowd.
Right now, Toes Over is in a tough spot. This beach/jetty is exposed to the southwest, but the wind is blowing straight on from that direction almost non-stop, making a mess of things. The swell is there, but it’s not doing us any favors.
The first week is flat-out poor. Starting Saturday, August 22nd, through Sunday the 23rd, we’re looking at 1ft to 1ft of onshore slop. Wave energy is low, reading about 107 to 201. Nothing to even look at. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th bring a tiny bump to around 1ft-2ft, but the onshore wind keeps it ugly. Energy (249) is still weak.
Wednesday the 26th through the end of August stays marginal. Swell runs 2ft to 3ft, but the wind is onshore. The mornings offer a little less wind, but it’s still cross-onshore and light. Energy does build, hitting 445 on the morning of Saturday the 29th, but the period is short, and the wind is a downer.
The game changes a little on Thursday morning, September 3rd. That morning shows 2ft from the SSW with a very long 18-second period and combined energy of 340. That period means real groundswell, but at a beach break it can be straight and sectiony. Still, the light onshore wind keeps it from being epic.
The real standout is the morning of Friday, September 4th. Toes Over has 3ft from the SSW, a 18-second period, and combined energy of 619. The big news: nearly glassy conditions with a slight air from the cross-onshore direction. That’s the cleanest morning of the whole 16-day window. Water temp is about normal for this time of year.
The morning of Saturday, September 5th is also worth a look – 3ft from the SSE, 15-second period, combined energy of 795, with a light cross-onshore breeze. It’s workable, but not as clean as Friday.
With crowds sometimes, this break usually has company, but the lack of quality will thin it out. Beginners should stay out of this – even at 3ft, the long period and onshore lean can be tricky. Experts, target the Friday morning.
Honestly, with the onshore wind and building swell, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than for a paddle surfer through most of September.
Rusty.
