The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
It’s a pretty quiet start to the run, with only small, weak swells and a lot of poor surf conditions. The water is sitting at 70° at Toes Over, which is a solid 6° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s freakishly warm, you might not even need a spring suit.
The first week is mostly a write-off for any decent surf. We’re seeing small waves around 1 ft to 2 ft, with period numbers that are all over the place but often quite long for such small waves. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, making things messy. The combined energy is low, sitting between 140 and 271 (weak), and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” There’s a slight uptick on Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th, where the swell bumps up to 2 ft and 2 ft, but the combined energy finally climbs into the moderate range (475 to 605), though the conditions are still only described as marginal.
We’ve got a gap of several days with no real standout surf until we get into the middle of the second week. The best, and really the only, highlight in this entire forecast comes around Thursday, July 24th. On the morning of the 24th, we see a solid jump in combined energy to 1017 (strong) with a 3 ft swell from the south, period at 17 seconds. The wind is light and cross-onshore, which is manageable. The afternoon gets even better: the swell pushes to 4 ft from the south, energy is 1111 (strong), and that long period means the waves will have some real push. However, the wind goes onshore, and the rating is still only marginal. Crowds are possible at Toes Over, so keep an eye out.
The 25th of July holds onto that 4 ft to 5 ft swell from the south, but the wind picks up to 12 mph on Saturday afternoon, making it choppy and poor. The 26th drops back to 2 ft, and the energy returns to 666 (moderate), but the wind is onshore again.
Honestly, the only session that looks like it could be worth the paddle is the morning of Thursday, July 24th at Toes Over. The swell is 3 ft from the south with a very long 17-second period, and the combined energy is strong (1017). The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit textured but not blown out. The long period might make it a bit straight at the beach/jetty setup, but it’s the best we’ve got. Don’t get too excited about anything else.
Rusty.
