The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Truth be told, it’s a grim stretch ahead. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until later in the window, and even then it’s going to be a marginal, short-period affair. For the most part, you’ll be staring at flat, onshore slop. The water temperature is sitting about average for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re waiting.
The standout—and I use that term loosely—is Toes-Over (beach/jetty). It’s a fairly consistent spot that’s exposed to the SW, which is the optimum direction. The only real flicker of life comes on the morning of Thursday, August 28th. We’ve got a 2ft swell from the SSW, with a very long period of 19 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and combined wave energy is moderate at 281. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the SSW at 3 mph, which will keep the surface clean with just small ripples. It’s an advanced break, and with that long period, the sets will be well-spaced and powerful, which is better suited to a reef or point, but it’s been known to work here. It’s only marginal, though, so don’t expect much.
The morning of Saturday, August 29th, also shows a bit of pulse: 3ft from the SSW with a 17-second period, energy at 393 (moderate), and light onshore winds. Same story—marginal and questionable for tide. Then on the morning of Monday, September 1st, we get a 4ft swell from the west, but period drops to a short 7 seconds, making it weak and messy. Energy is 268, still moderate, but that short period means it’ll be a lumpy, wind-affected closeout. That’s about as good as it gets.
The rest of the 16 days is a write-off: poor surf conditions, onshore winds, and tiny swell. Several days in a row have nothing going for them. The first two weeks are basically a blank run, and that’s not unusual for this area when the swell windows don’t line up.
So, if you’re desperate, have a look at Toes-Over on the morning of the 28th or 29th of August, or the morning of September 1st, but keep your expectations in the gutter. Otherwise, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
