The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the same forecast for Toes Over, but in feet and Fahrenheit.
The water is a balmy 70°, which is a massive 5° warmer than average for this time of year. That’s a real anomaly – you’ll be in a rash guard or just boardies when you’d normally need a wetsuit.
The honest truth is the next week and a half is flat and frustrating. There’s a long gap with no real surf. The first few days have practically no waves. The swell is tiny, around 1ft, and the wind is cross-on or onshore, making the surface a mess. The combined energy is weak, between 126 and 191 – that’s barely a ripple. It’s a real struggle.
Things start to change a touch on Saturday the 18th. The swell bumps up to 2ft from the SW, with a long period of 18 seconds. The energy is building (275), but it’s still marginal. The wind is light cross-on, so it’s not clean, but it’s not terrible. You’ll be hunting for a waist-high wave with some shape from that long period.
Sunday the 19th morning is the first real standout. The swell hits 3ft from the S, with a 15-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 547. The wind is light and cross-on, which is a bummer, but the swell is starting to push. It’s still only a marginal call, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The S direction is a bit off the optimum SW.
The next week is a slow grind. The swell stays between 2ft and 4ft, mostly from the SSW or S, with periods from 12 to 21 seconds. The energy goes up and down, hitting 841 on Friday the 24th morning – that’s solid. But the wind is mostly onshore or light cross-on, and the surf quality is consistently “poor” or “marginal.” Nothing to get excited about.
For a true standout, wait for Saturday the 25th morning. The swell is 2ft from the SSW with a very long 21-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is 721, which is solid. The wind is light and onshore, so it’s not glassy, but that long period will give you a lined-up wave at Toes Over. It’s the pick of the second week, but remember, it’s a week and a half out, so it’s promising but not locked in.
Overall, this is a tough run. If you’re desperate, Sunday the 19th morning is the best of the first week, and Saturday the 25th morning is the one to circle in the second week. The rest is small, messy, or onshore. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
