The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what's coming up for the next couple of weeks at this break. Gotta be honest with you – it’s a lean spell. There’s a big gap with nothing worth paddling out for, but there is a little glimmer of hope right at the end if you’ve got the patience.
First thing: the water is sitting at 72° right now. That’s a good 6° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s very unusual. You won’t need a thick suit, that’s for sure.
Alright, let’s run through it. From Sunday the 16th of August, all the way through the afternoon of Saturday the 29th of August, it’s pretty much dead. Swell is tiny, mostly 1ft to 2ft out of the SW or SSW. The energy in the water is weak to moderate – between 102 and 374 – but the quality is shot. Every session is flagged “poor surf conditions” or “marginal.” The wind’s either onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and ugly. There’s no window where it all clicks.
If you’re really jonesing for a paddle, maybe Tuesday morning the 25th of August, with light airs and a 2ft SW swell running at a 16-second period, but the report says “marginal.” Not one I’d set the alarm for.
Now, the one standout – and I mean the *only* one worth talking about – is Saturday morning the 29th of August at Toes Over. The data shows a little bump to 3ft from the SSW with a period of 17 seconds. That’s a proper, long-period groundswell. The combined energy hits 374, which is moderate but has some punch at that size. Wind is light from the south at 3 mph – a slight air – so it’ll be glassy. That’s a major positive. The break is a beach/jetty setup, open to the SW, which is right in the wheelhouse for this swell. Keep in mind, long-period swell can make beach breaks a bit too straight, but at this size it should still be fun. It’s a fairly consistent spot, and crowds are only a “sometimes” thing, so you might luck out with some space.
Honestly, if you can hold out, that Saturday morning session is your only real shot at something clean in this whole 16-day window. The rest of the time, save your energy.
Rusty.
