The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Toes Over.

First up, the water is sitting at 70°F which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit. That’s a nice bonus.

To be straight with you, the first few days look pretty flat and sad. The swell is tiny, barely 1.0ft to 1ft, and the wind is mostly onshore or light cross-onshore. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting around 135 to 146 (in brackets) on Friday, and it doesn’t get much better through Saturday. Sunday sees a bit of a boost in energy to 206 (in brackets), but the swell is still only 1ft and the wind is cross-on, so it’s a real struggle. Don’t bother paddling out for that.

Monday the 24th through Tuesday the 25th, the swell height stays small, around 1ft to 2ft, but the energy starts to build, hitting 256 (in brackets) on Tuesday morning. The wind is still onshore though, so it’s marginal at best. The period is long, around 16 to 18 seconds, which is a groundswell, but with such little height and messy wind, it’s not doing much for this beach/jetty setup.

Wednesday the 26th is where we start to see a little more life. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the south, with a 13-second period, and the energy is solid at 476 (in brackets). The wind is cross-on in the morning, which is not ideal, but the afternoon is onshore, so it’s still not clean. The swell is still small enough for beginners, but the wind is the problem.

Thursday the 27th holds similar 3ft south swell, with energy around 364 (in brackets), but again, cross-on wind in the morning.

Friday the 28th morning has a 2ft swell from the SSW with a long 17-second period, and energy is strong at 415 (in brackets). The wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be a gem, but the energy is there. The period is long, so the waves will have better shape and more push, but the onshore wind will mess up the surface.

Saturday the 29th sees a 2ft to 3ft swell, with energy up to 451 (in brackets) in the afternoon. The wind is light and cross-on in the morning, which is a slight improvement, but it’s still not offshore.

Sunday the 30th has consistent 3ft SSW swell, with energy around 299 to 319 (in brackets). The wind is light and onshore, so it’s not going to be a standout.

The best on offer is probably Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. The swell is 3ft from the south, which is the biggest of the period, and while the wind is cross-on, the energy is moderate to strong (476 and 364 in brackets). The period is 12 to 13 seconds, so it’s a solid swell. It’s not a classic, clean day, but it’s the most surfable you’ll see. The crowd profile at Toes Over is "sometimes", so you might have a few others out, but it won’t be a circus.

The second week, from the 1st of September onwards, the swell gets a bit inconsistent. The 1st has a 3ft west swell, but the period is short, only 6 to 7 seconds, so it’s weak and choppy. The energy is 192 to 219 (in brackets), but the short period means it’s a messy, wind-swell. The wind is cross or cross-on, so it’s not looking good. The rest of the week, the swell drops back to 2ft to 2ft, with energy around 142 to 390 (in brackets), but the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on. The 4th of September has light rain and a 9 mph south wind, which will make it choppy. Nothing to get excited about.

Overall, it’s a flat and wind-affected period. The best days are those mid-week around the 26th and 27th, but even then, you’re dealing with cross-on wind. The long-period swells (over 15 seconds) on the 28th and 29th have good energy, but the onshore wind will spoil the surface. If you’re desperate for a paddle, those are your windows, but don’t expect glassy perfection. For a beach/jetty spot, you need the wind to be offshore (NE) to get any real quality, and we’re not seeing that.

Rusty, signing off.
