The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board, but maybe leave the big one at home for a while. We’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch of surf here at Toes Over for the next couple of weeks. It’s not going to be a total flat spell, but it’s going to be a run of small, mostly junky waves that will have you checking your watch more than your paddle. The water’s a balmy 70°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a serious anomaly, so you can get away with a thinner suit, that’s for sure.
We’re starting off this Tuesday morning, the 18th, with only about 2ft of swell. The energy is weak, coming in at 226, and it's coming from the SSW. The wind is a cross-onshore breeze, so it’s going to be a bit scratchy. The period is a long 16 seconds, which is nice, but with that size, it’s just not going to have any push. It’s a morning for the log if you’re desperate, but the forecast suggests conditions are marginal at best. The rest of this week and into the weekend is more of the same. We’re looking at small waves in the 1ft to 2ft range with onshore and cross-onshore winds, which just makes everything mushy and lumpy. The swell energy stays weak to moderate, hovering between 98 and 261. It's going to be a battle for a clean one, and the poor surf quality calls mean you’ll be scratching your head more than surfing.
There is a bit of a gap here where the surf is just not worth recommending at all. From the 20th through the 28th, the forecast is just a bunch of poor to marginal calls. It's a real lull. You're looking at tiny swell and winds that are just not cooperating. If you're a beginner, this is actually a safe window because the swell is barely reaching 2ft, but for the rest of us, it's a waiting game.
Now, let’s talk about the one little blip that might be worth circling on the calendar. On Tuesday morning, the 29th of August, we see the swell bump up a touch to 3ft from the SSW with a 16-second period. The energy jumps to 276, which is still moderate but the strongest we've seen in a while. More importantly, it’s glassy with a light offshore wind, which makes it the cleanest looking session in this whole stretch. It’s not the biggest, but it will probably be the best shape you’ll find. This is the one to keep an eye on. That morning has potential to be a fun little session on the inside.
The following Sunday morning, the 30th, looks similar with 3ft from the SSW and light offshore wind. The period drops slightly to 15 seconds, but it’s still a solid option. After this, things ease back off again into the first days of September.
Now, there’s one more thing in the forecast that stands out, and it’s about as far out as we can see. On Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, the swell height jumps to 4ft, but it’s from the West with a very short, meaningless 6-second period. That tells me it’s likely windswell and won’t have any real shape. The energy is moderate at 262, but the short period means it will be crumbly and unorganized. It’s a reminder that we’re heading into a different season, but I wouldn't get too excited about that one just yet.
So, in short, the best bet in this whole 16-day stretch is that Tuesday morning, the 29th of August. It’s not a day for the record books, but with the clean conditions and a little more size, it might just be the one that saves the week. The rest is just small, messy, and a real test of patience.
Rusty out.
