The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here again. I’ve been chewing on the data for Toes Over, and the outlook is a tough one. We’re in a flat spell for a good while.
Starting now, Thursday the 20th of August, it’s pretty grim. The swell is tiny, barely 2 ft out of the SSW and SW, and the wind is mostly onshore from the SW, making a mess of things. The combined wave energy is weak to moderate, reading in the 100s and low 200s. A few mornings have a super light S breeze, like the 20th, 26th, and 30th, which would turn the surface glassy, but there’s just no push to the waves. You’d be bobbing around for nothing.
From Sunday the 23rd of August through the end of the month, the combined wave energy gets a bit more interesting, jumping into the 300s and peaking at 454 on the 29th. That’s a solid moderate amount of juice. The swell heights hold around 1 ft to 3 ft, and the period stretches to 16 to 19 seconds – a proper groundswell with some grunt. But the issue is the same: SW onshore wind almost the whole time, turning that long-period energy into a bumpy, blown-out ride. The wind is the enemy.
The only real chance for something half-decent is Sunday morning, the 30th of August. You’ll have a light S wind at 3 mph, just a slight cross-onshore ripple, and a 3 ft SSW swell with a 15-second period. The combined energy is 330 – decent. The wind is as clean as it’s going to get, and the long period will give the wave some shape, even if it’s prone to closing out a bit straight on a beach break. It’s your best shot. Expect the crowd to be possible since it’s the only game in town.
Going into the first week of September, Monday the 31st to Friday the 4th, the swell settles back into the 1 ft to 2 ft range. The wind looks a bit better with some SSE cross-shore breezes on the 3rd and 4th, which would clean up the face a touch, but the swell is too weak to get excited about. The combined energy is back in the 100s and low 200s.
Honestly, the pick of the lot is that Sunday the 30th of August morning. If the wind ever goes offshore – the ideal direction for Toes Over is NE – then even the small days become worth a look. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year. Keep the rubber on if you’re a cold-water soul.
