The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right now, it’s a slow start. The first real surf worth paddling out for doesn’t arrive until the morning of Saturday, 22 August. Before that, things are pretty flat or just messy.
The standout of the whole run is clearly Monday morning, 24 August. That’s when we see some serious energy. Prainha will be pulling in a solid 8ft swell from the SSE, with a very long period of 14 seconds. The combined swell energy is a powerful 1963, which means there’s a lot of water moving. That’s big, clean surf with light offshore wind. This is one for the experienced crew only – over 8ft is expert territory, but at 8ft, it’s still pushing the limits for intermediates. The long period will make for excellent shape on this exposed spot, but expect it to be a bit paddle-intensive getting out. Crowds are possible here.
Leading up to that, Saturday the 22nd morning is a nice warm-up. You’ve got 6ft swell from the south with a 10-second period, decent cross-off wind from the SSE, and a clean lineup. The energy is a solid 745 (moderate-to-strong). It’s a good solid session for intermediates looking to get some juice.
Sunday the 23rd morning stays clean with glassy conditions and a 4ft swell from the SSE, period at a nice 11 seconds. It’s a step down in size but the wind is perfect. The water temp is 68°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice little bonus.
Monday morning (24th) is the big one as I said, but by Tuesday the 25th morning, we’re back to a more manageable 6ft from the SSE, with glassy, calm wind. Still very clean and fun, with good energy. The rest of that week holds mostly clean, small-ish waves in the 4ft to 5ft range, with light winds, but the quality is a bit more mixed.
We then hit a drier stretch. The end of August and start of September sees smaller swells and more onshore or cross-on conditions. Nothing to write home about. There’s a blip on Wednesday morning, 3 September, with a 5ft swell from the NE and clean cross-off wind, showing some promise, but it’s a week and a half out, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the window is Saturday 22 August through to around Wednesday 26 August. The rest of the outlook is quiet or messy. Don’t sleep on that Monday morning session if you’ve got the skills.
