Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ribanceira over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, let’s get into what’s on offer at Ribanceira over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a pretty wild ride here, but the first few days are a real mixed bag.
The week starts off a bit ordinary. Friday morning the 10th of July has some tiny 3 ft surf from the ESE with a solid 12-second period, and the water is *much colder than normal* at 60°. That’s a big anomaly of nearly 6° below average, so you’ll want a thick suit. The winds are glassy though, which is nice, but the wave energy is weak at (288). Conditions pick up by Friday afternoon when a 4 ft ESE swell rolls in, energy jumps to moderate (401), and we get clean surf with a cross-off breeze. That’s a decent window.
Saturday the 11th is a write-off. The morning sees 5 ft from the ESE but a cross-on wind from the NNE messes it right up. The energy is up to a strong (689) but the surface is choppy and poor. Afternoon drops to 3 ft and still cross-on. Not worth it.
Sunday the 12th morning is the real standout of the first week. Clear skies, offshore WSW wind at 6 mph, and 5 ft of ESE swell at 12 seconds. The combined energy is very strong at (1108), so there's plenty of punch. That offshore breeze will have the sandbars at Ribanceira looking clean and lined up. This is the one to circle if you can get out early.
Sunday afternoon sees a shift: 7 ft from the S but a short period of just 8 seconds. The wind cranks up to 16 mph from the SSW, and while it’s cross-off and clean, the short period makes it a bit walled and chunky. More of a challenge than a treat.
Monday the 13th morning keeps the fun going with 7 ft from the S at 8 seconds, but now we’ve got a gentle offshore from the SW (9 mph) – clean again and strong energy (1004). This is still good, but be aware that 7 ft is getting into intermediate-to-strong territory. Monday afternoon cleans up with 4 ft and lighter winds.
Tuesday the 14th morning is glassy and 7 ft from the SE at 10 seconds, energy at (867). That’s a solid, powerful swell and with no wind it’ll be smooth. Afternoon sees the wind swing onshore from the NE at 12 mph – that’s the end of the good session. From Tuesday afternoon all the way through to Monday the 20th, things get grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions with onshore or cross-on winds and dropping swell. By the 18th and 19th of July we’re down to 1 ft and 0.7 ft, with energy barely in the double digits. That’s a full six days of nothing worth paddling out for.
Now, the light at the end of the tunnel: Tuesday the 21st of July starts to change. The morning is calm and glassy with 4 ft from the S at 7 seconds. It’s short period but clean. Tuesday afternoon sees 6 ft from the S and cross-off winds – surfable and clean. Wednesday the 22nd holds 5 ft in the morning and then a punchy 6 ft from the SE in the afternoon with a 12 mph offshore from the SSW. That’s going to be clean and hollow.
Thursday the 23rd of July is the second true standout of the forecast. Morning has 6 ft from the ESE, clean and cross-off, energy at (729). But the afternoon is the real gem: glassy winds, 7 ft from the S at 8 seconds, and massive energy at (1069). That very strong energy with glassy conditions is going to produce some excellent waves at Ribanceira. Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th tail off a bit but still offer clean surf with lighter winds and shoulder-high swell.
So bottom line: Sunday the 12th morning and Thursday the 23rd afternoon are your best bets. Sunday the 12th is cleaner and more lined-up with the offshore wind. Thursday the 23rd has bigger energy and glass, but the shorter period means it might be a bit more closed out at the sandbar. Both are worth the drive.
Stay safe, and keep an eye on the wind shifts. This stretch has a lot of “almost” days, but the standouts are proper.
