Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for this stretch.
We’ve got a bit of a slow cook to start off, but things pick up. The first sign of life shows on Tuesday morning, July 7th, down at Ribanceira. It’s a sandbar setup, pretty consistent, and it’s sheltered from the bigger stuff, so it can handle a swell. The water’s sitting at 60° which is *much colder* than normal for this time of year – that’s a 6° anomaly, so it’s a real shock to the system when you first duck under. Suit up warm.
Tuesday morning, July 7th kicks it off with a clean, 5ft swell from the south at 8 seconds. Wind is offshore from the SSW at 9 mph, so the face should be clean. It’s not a bomb, but combined energy is 493, so there’s moderate push there. It’s a reasonable opener, but it can get a little fat on that short period.
Wednesday morning, July 8th is the real standout here. The swell drops a fraction to 4ft from the south, but the period stretches to 9 seconds and the wind goes *glassy* – NW at 3 mph. That’s as clean as it gets. If you want silky, smooth lines and nobody else in the water (crowds only “sometimes”), this is the session to aim for. Don’t sleep on it.
From there, the quality goes in and out. Thursday is a write-off with poor onshore wind, but Friday morning, July 10th brings a sneaky clean 4ft ESE groundswell at 12 seconds with light offshore SW wind. The sets will be more spaced, but the shape should be there. By Friday afternoon it gets better – 4ft, clean, cross-off wind.
Sunday afternoon, July 12th is another real boss session. We get 6ft from the south at 11 seconds, with energy blowing out at 1118 – that’s strong, powerful surf. The wind is light and slightly cross-off SSE at 3 mph, so it will be clean. That’s a proper afternoon. But with 6ft, it’s getting a bit too much for a learner.
Monday the 13th still has good, clean, offshore conditions (5ft, 12 mph SSW wind), so that’s a decent option if you missed Sunday.
After that, things drop away. From July 14th onward the swell winds down into dribble mode, with a long gap of nothing really worth paddling for. There’s a stretch from the 15th to the 22nd where most days are poor, choppy, or have tiny waves. The 20th and 21st have some clean, small 2ft days, but they're ankle-to-knee high and not going to get your heart rate up.
Bottom line: Wednesday morning, July 8th is your golden window for glassy, clean, intermediate goodness. Sunday afternoon, July 12th is the heavy hitter for power and size, great for a stronger surfer. Don’t waste time on the second week – it’s a barren spell.
Stay safe, keep warm, and I’ll see you in the lineup.
