The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Ribanceira. It’s a pretty quiet start to the outlook, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board just yet.
We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions kicking things off. From Friday the 17th to Tuesday the 22nd, it’s mostly flat or tiny, and when there is a little bump, the wind is howling cross-on or onshore. The first couple of days in particular are a write-off. The water is sitting at 60°F at the start, which is a massive 5°F colder than normal for this time of year – that’s a real shock to the system, so make sure you’ve got a decent wetsuit.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Tuesday the 21st afternoon. The glassy conditions are a treat, but with swell only 2ft from the SSW and period around 9 seconds, it’s just surfable waves, nothing to write home about. The combined energy is weak (86). It’s a small step in the right direction.
Wednesday morning the 22nd is where things start to get interesting. A clean 5ft S swell with a 10-second period and light offshore wind gives us a decent wave. The energy is moderate (371). The afternoon is glassy too, but the swell stays similar. It’s not a standout, but it’s a solid, surfable day.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is the following Monday, the 27th of July. This is the best of the whole run. We’ve got a solid 6ft S groundswell, period of 13 seconds, with a clean moderate offshore wind. The combined energy is strong (1230). This is going to be proper, lined-up waves. It’s got “expect very good surf conditions” written all over it. The morning is the pick, but the afternoon is just as good with 5ft and clean offshore winds. This is a day to call in sick for.
The swell eases off a bit after that, but we get another big pulse on Thursday the 30th of July. The morning session is a beast: 8ft S swell with a 11-second period, light offshore, and very strong energy (1212). This is a heavy day – getting well over 8ft, so it’s experts only. The afternoon sees the wind shift onshore, making it choppier, but the morning is a proper challenge.
The last few days of the outlook settle down into smaller, cleaner, more manageable surf. Nothing special, but consistent enough to keep the stoke alive.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a total bust. The 27th of July is your absolute best bet – mark it. The 30th of July morning is for the big-wave crew only. The rest is just background noise.
Rusty.
