The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s happening at Ribanceira over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, it’s a quiet start. We’ve got a few days of nothing really worth paddling out for, with tiny swell and less-than-ideal wind. That’s the case from Sunday the 19th right through until Wednesday the 22nd. Small, weak, and mostly choppy. Not your time.
Then things shift. Thursday the 23rd is where it finally gets interesting. A solid pulse of swell rolls in, with head-high waves around 5.9ft to 6.6ft, coming from the S and SSE. The wind turns offshore, moderate, and clean. The water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year at 62.4°, but you won’t care when you’re getting into that. The combined energy jumps up to strong levels (471-560), and the 9-second period means the waves will have some shape. This is the standout window, and it runs through Friday the 24th as well. Friday morning has clean 5.9ft swell from the SE with light offshore wind, and by Friday afternoon it goes glassy. That’s the pick of the period right there.
Saturday the 25th drops off a bit. The swell backs down to around 3.6ft, still glassy in the morning, but it gets messy in the afternoon. Sunday the 26th through to Tuesday the 29th is mostly a write-off: small, onshore, choppy. Not much to say.
Now, looking ahead to Thursday the 30th of July, that’s a big one for the experienced crew. Swell jumps up to 8.2ft from the S, with clean cross-off winds and light air. The combined energy goes through the roof (2289). That’s powerful, heavy wave energy. This is not for beginners—if you’re not comfortable in solid surf, sit this one out. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s got some push but not the super-long lines. The morning of the 30th is the best of that pulse, with the afternoon still good at 6.6ft and clean.
Friday the 31st has a fun cleanup at 3.9ft in the morning with glassy conditions, but it goes onshore later. Into the first week of August, we’re looking at small, weak waves again, nothing to get excited about.
So, to sum it up: your best bets are Thursday the 23rd through Friday the 24th for solid, clean, head-high surf. If you’re an expert, mark Thursday the 30th of July on your calendar for some serious power. The rest of the window is mostly flat or poor.
Stay stoked.
