The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checking in from Ribanceira. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up, but it kicks off with a bit of a wait before the real magic happens.
The first couple of days, Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, are looking prime. Sunday morning starts clean with a 7ft south swell, 11-second period, and light offshore wind. The wave energy is moderate at (1022). It’s not huge but it’s well-shaped. By Monday the 24th, things ramp up. We’re looking at an 8ft south swell with a long 14-second period and glassy conditions in the morning. That’s a standout session right there. The wave energy is very strong at (3029), and the offshore wind will keep it clean. This is for experienced surfers though – that size and power is no joke. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Tuesday the 25th is a write-off with onshore winds and poor conditions. Wednesday and Thursday are also blown out with strong onshore winds and messy surf. By Friday the 28th, the swell drops right off and we’re in a lull that lasts through the weekend.
Now, here’s the next standout: Monday the 31st of August. We get a new pulse of swell, 8ft from the east-southeast, but the period is short at 8 seconds. It’s still got moderate energy (1053) and cross-offshore wind keeps it clean. That’s a solid option if you’re keen, but it won’t be as well-shaped as the earlier south swell.
After that, it fades again. The first week of September is small and ordinary. A few mornings have light offshore winds but the swell is tiny – under 3ft. It’s not worth paddling out for. The whole stretch from the 28th of August through to the 7th of September is a long gap with very little on offer.
In short, the clear standout is Monday the 24th of August with that 8ft south groundswell and glassy morning conditions. The secondary highlight is Monday the 31st of August with a similar size but shorter period. Get on it if you can handle the size.
Rusty.
