The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window for Ribanceira is a real mixed bag, and it’s gonna test your patience. There’s a long, drawn-out stretch of nothing much at the start, then a brief window of quality, followed by a big, messy pulse that’s only for the brave. Let’s walk through it.

We kick off from Friday, July 17th, with absolutely nothing to get excited about. The swell is tiny, around 0.7ft to 2ft, and the wind is a stubborn cross-on from the NNE, making it choppy and just plain ugly. This flat spell drags on all the way through to the 21st. Tuesday morning the 21st shows a brief moment of glassy conditions, but with only 1ft of swell, there’s no power to work with. That afternoon sees a small clean-up with a light cross-off breeze, but still only 2ft – you’d be fighting for scraps.

The first real glimpse of hope comes on Wednesday morning, July 22nd. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the S, with a period of 8 seconds, and it’s glassy. The combined energy is still weak (124), so it’s surfable but very ordinary. The afternoon gets a bit more size at 4ft, but the wind swings onshore and ruins it.

Thursday the 23rd is similar – a morning of poor conditions, but the afternoon turns glassy again with 4ft of SSE swell. The energy is moderate now (242), but the period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s a bit lumpy and weak. Still, it’s the first real surfable window.

The standouts of this whole outlook are the 24th and 25th of July. Friday the 24th starts with a clean 6ft swell from the S, with a cross-off breeze and a combined energy of 935 (moderate). That’s proper surf. The afternoon stays clean at 5ft, with a longer 10-second period. Saturday the 25th is even better for clean lines – glassy conditions all day, with 5ft of SSE swell in the morning and 4ft in the afternoon, both with a long period of 9 to 11 seconds. The energy is strong (616 and 725). This is the best on offer: clean, glassy, and fun-sized waves. Expect crowds though, as it’s a fairly consistent sandbar that can get busy.

After that, things get messy. Sunday the 26th has onshore wind and a poor 3ft to 6ft mix. The 27th and 28th are mostly blown out or too small. Tuesday the 28th afternoon does have a clean offshore wind from the SW with 6ft of swell, but the period is short (7 seconds) and the energy is moderate (397) – okay, but not a standout.

Now, the big swell arrives on the 29th of July. Wednesday morning brings 8ft from the S with a 10-second period and a combined energy of 1381 (strong). That’s big, and it’s pushing into 10ft by the afternoon with 3.0m from the S, a 12-second period, and a massive 5226 energy (very strong). This is expert territory only. The wind is onshore and cross-on, making it lumpy and challenging. It’s a big, raw swell that’s better suited for towing or a big boat.

The 30th and 31st of July stay big and messy, with heavy rain and strong cross-on winds. Swells of 8ft to 12ft with periods of 12 to 14 seconds, but the conditions are poor. The combined energy is through the roof (up to 5775), but it’s a washing machine out there.

The very last day, Saturday August 1st, offers a glimmer of hope. The morning shows 8ft of SE swell with a 13-second period, a clean cross-off breeze, and a combined energy of 1975 (strong). The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions,” but it’s at the far end of the run, so treat it as promising but not locked in.

So, the verdict: if you want clean, glassy, fun waves, your window is Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th. That’s your best bet. The rest is either flat, sloppy, or too big and messy. For the brave, the 29th offers huge swell, but it’s a tough paddle in onshore winds.

Rusty.
