The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Rosa.
We’re looking at a promising run of surf, but it’s going to demand a bit of patience and a pick of the right windows. The best of the best is shaping up to be Monday morning, no doubt about it. We’ve got a solid 8ft south swell rolling in with a long 14-second period, pumping a lot of energy into the water. The wind is dead calm, glassy – that’s the kind of morning you dream about. The water’s sitting around 67°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so nothing weird there. This is for the experienced crew though, as that size is getting into the big stuff.
The action kicks off Sunday morning. A 7ft south swell with an 11-second period and a nice cross-offshore wind from the SW. The energy is solid, and it’s clean. It’s a good warm-up, but the real magic is the next day.
Sunday afternoon, things get a bit messier. The swell bumps up to 8ft, but the wind swings around to a cross-shore SSE breeze, bringing in a slight chop. It’s rideable, but not the best of the window.
Then, as I said, Monday morning is the standout. An 8ft south swell with a 14-second period, glassy conditions, and energy readings through the roof. This is a groundswell, and with that long period, it’s going to have some real power. It’s also going to be a bit more challenging for the beach breaks, but for a spot like this, it’s a dream.
Monday afternoon, the wind shifts to a light cross-on, and the quality drops off. The swell holds, but the clean lines are gone.
Tuesday morning is another solid option. The swell settles to 6ft from the south, still with a 12-second period, but the wind is glassy again from the NE. It’s clean, with good energy. This is a strong second choice.
After that, the week gets a bit lumpy. Wednesday and Thursday see the wind picking up from the NNE, creating a cross-on chop that messes with the quality. The swell direction shifts to the SSE, and the conditions are just not worth paddling out for. The energy is still there, but it’s messy.
We hit a bit of a lull from Friday through the weekend. The swell drops and the direction swings to the ENE with a short, weak period. The wind is all over the place, and the scores are pretty low. There’s a glimmer of hope on Sunday the 30th morning with a glassy 5ft ENE swell, but it’s small and weak.
The next real standout comes on Monday, 31st of August. A 6ft ENE swell with a 10-second period, and dead calm winds. It’s glassy, clean, and the energy is moderate. It’s a solid, fun-sized day.
Tuesday, 1st September brings a big change. The wind really fires up, and we get a big 10ft south swell. The wind is cross-off, but the swell is just too big for this break. That’s a pass for everyone but the most experienced, and even then, it’s a caution.
The same massive swell continues into Wednesday, 2nd September. Another 10ft south swell, this time with a longer 11-second period and even more energy. The morning is clean, but the size is a serious barrier. The afternoon picks up a cross-shore wind, so it’s not ideal.
Finally, Thursday, 3rd September, we get a drop in size. A 6ft SSE swell, and the morning is glassy again. It’s a return to clean, fun waves after the big stuff passes.
The last few days of the forecast are a mix of small, messy surf and strong onshore winds. Nothing to write home about.
So, to wrap it up: if you have to pick one session, make it Monday morning, 24th August. Tuesday morning, 25th August, is the next best bet. The end of the month and start of September has some clean windows, but be aware of the big swell days that are too much for this spot.
This is Rusty, signing off.
