The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Rosa over the next couple of weeks. The water is sitting at 59°, which is about 6° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s a big difference, so don’t even think about a spring suit.
The first stretch is a total dud. From Wednesday the 15th to Friday the 17th, you’ve got moderate cross-shore winds and chop, with swell between 4ft and 6ft, but the wave quality is poor or marginal. The combined energy is moderate (391 to 545). Not worth your time.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th have more size – 8ft in the morning – but the wind is still cross or cross-onshore. The energy jumps to 1290 on Saturday morning, which is strong. The report says marginal, so it’s for experienced surfers only. That 8ft is getting into expert territory, especially with the messy wind.
Monday the 20th morning is the first real bright spot. The wind turns light SSW at 3 mph, cross-off, and the swell drops to 5ft from the ENE. The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions” and the energy is moderate (382). The wind is clean. This is the best of the near term.
Tuesday the 21st morning is similar, with 5ft ENE swell and light cross-off wind from the NNW. Clean again. Wednesday the 22nd morning also looks clean with 4ft ENE swell and a light SSW breeze. These three mornings are the standouts for the first week – nothing huge, but clean and fun.
Then there’s a few days of mediocrity until Friday the 24th afternoon, which has a small clean-up with 3ft SE swell and cross-off wind.
The second week has a promising run starting Saturday the 25th, with 5ft to 7ft from the S, period stretching to 11 seconds. The energy is strong (766 to 1765). The wind is light cross, so it’s a bit lumpy. The real standout is Sunday the 26th morning: 5ft S swell, 11 seconds, and the wind is glassy – dead calm, E at 3 mph. The wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions” and the energy is moderate (648). That’s the pick of the whole outlook. Glassy, clean, and a solid swell. It’s a long-period groundswell, so it’ll be better shaped with longer lulls between sets. It’ll break a bit straighter on a beach break, so find a good bank.
Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th mornings have some size (5ft and 5ft) and long periods (12 and 13 seconds), but the cross-wind from the NNE at 12 mph kills the quality. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are back to poor, with onshore wind and chop.
Bottom line: the best windows are Monday 20th to Wednesday 22nd mornings for clean, smaller waves, and the absolute standout is Sunday 26th morning with glassy conditions and a solid 5ft S groundswell. That’s the one to mark on the calendar.
This is Rusty, signing off.
