The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at what’s shaping up for Rosa over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, the start of this run is pretty grim with no surf to speak of through the first few days. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are a total write-off with strong cross-shore winds and a messy cross-chop. The wave energy is weak (357) at best, so don't even bother waxing up.
By Saturday morning the 18th, the swell starts to lift into the 8ft range, but the wind is still a problem. The "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions" tag is real, and it’s a beach setup, so this is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now. The energy is ramping up (1217), but the quality just isn't there.
Sunday the 19th is similar – a bit of size but still choppy. We get a break in the weather on Monday the 20th morning. Finally, some relief. The wind goes dead flat and glassy, with a clean 5ft swell from the ENE. The water is sitting at 60°F, which is *much colder than normal* for this time of year – that anomaly of -6°F is very unusual, so bring a thicker wetsuit if you’re heading out. That Monday morning session is your first real chance for a few clean ones, even if the energy is only moderate (341).
Tuesday the 21st morning is another glassy winner, with WSW wind at 3 mph and a clean 5ft NE swell. Energy is moderate (363), but with those conditions, it’ll be worth a paddle.
We get a proper standout on Wednesday the 22nd morning. The wind goes cross-offshore from the SSW with a clean 4ft south swell. The water is getting a bit of rain, but the wave is clean and the energy is a solid moderate (355). For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a solid call for a quiet mid-week session.
The real highlight on offer, the one that gets my blood pumping, is Friday the 24th of July morning. The wind is cross-offshore from the NNW, the sea is clean, and we have a 6ft S swell moving in with moderate-strong energy (586). The period is short at 7 seconds, so it’s windswell, but with that clean face and chest-to-head high waves, it’ll be punchy and fun if you can find a bank that handles it.
Then, looking a bit further out, Monday the 27th of July morning is another glass-off with the wind dropping to zero. The swell is a 6ft ENE, and the energy is strong (620). For a morning, that could be the pick of the second week, but the long-range calls are always a bit less certain.
And finally, Thursday the 30th of July morning gives us one more glassy slot with a clean 4ft from the east and very long period of 10 seconds (506 energy). It’s light swell, but that long-period groundswell will have some push and connect on the points if they can handle the direction.
To sum it up: the first week is a struggle, but hang in there. Wednesday the 22nd morning and Friday the 24th of July morning are the standouts. If I had to pick one, I’m going Friday the 24th morning for that clean cross-off and the best size of the run before the winds go fresh. Stay patient.
Rusty.
