G’day, it's Rusty here. Alright, let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for Rosa. The next couple of weeks have some solid pulses of energy, but you’ll need to pick your moments. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
We kick things off proper on Tuesday the 7th of July. The morning’s the pick with a clean 5 ft S swell and a cross-off wind making things tidy. The energy’s got some bite to it (521), and with a period of 8 seconds, it’s a bit on the shorter side, but it’ll still offer up some fun wedges. This setup is exposed to the swell and the SE direction is spot on. It’s a fairly consistent break here, and with the wind behaving, you can expect some clean runners. Crowds are only around sometimes, so you should be able to find your own little corner.
Tuesday afternoon, though, the wind swings onshore and things get messy – that 4 ft S swell turns into a bit of a chop fest. Wednesday the 8th of July morning is worth a look again. Another clean morning with a 4 ft S swell and a light offshore breeze. The energy is a bit lower (324), but the quality will be there. Wednesday afternoon the wind turns onshore again, so don’t bother.
Thursday the 9th is a smaller day, with a 3 ft ESE swell and a tricky cross wind. Friday the 10th, the early session is the go. A clean 3 ft ESE swell with a cross-off wind, and the energy jumps up a notch (340). That south-east direction matches the break well. The afternoon is a cross-on mess.
Saturday the 11th and the weekend looks like a write-off. The swell builds to 5 ft ESE but with cloudy skies and a cross wind, it’ll be bumpy. The energy’s there (674), but the wind will kill it.
Now, keep an eye on Sunday the 12th of July. This is where it gets interesting. Sunday morning you get a clean 3 ft ESE swell with a cross-off wind and some light rain – the energy is pumping at 676 and the waves will be glassy and clean. Then Sunday afternoon, the swell jumps to 6 ft S, period drops to 7 seconds, but it’s still clean with a cross-off wind. The energy is 782. This is a standout window. That southerly swell with clean conditions will make for some punchy, fun waves. Good for intermediates, but 6 ft is getting up there for beginners.
Monday the 13th of July morning is the real highlight of the outlook. A solid 6 ft S swell, 10-second period, cross-off wind, and the energy is cranking at 834. This is the best on offer. The waves will have some serious push, and with the wind off the land, they’ll be beautifully groomed. This is for the experienced crew only though – it’s over 5 ft. Crowds are only sometimes, so you should get plenty of waves. Monday afternoon the wind picks up to 16 mph, so the window is tight.
Tuesday the 14th of July morning brings something special. A glassy 4 ft SE swell with a 11-second period. It’ll be dead calm with that WNW wind, and the energy is moderate (461). This is a classic long-period groundswell, and it’ll offer up some long, lined-up walls. Best on the point, but at 4 ft it’ll be a cruisy, fun size for everyone.
After that, things get a bit sketchy for a while. Wednesday the 15th morning is clean, but by the 16th, it’s small and messy. The 17th of July Friday morning has a glassy 3 ft ESE swell with 11-second period, which could be a sneaky session, but the afternoon turns onshore. From Friday the 17th afternoon right through to Wednesday the 22nd of July, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions. The wind blows hard from the north and northeast, making everything choppy and ugly. The swell sticks around, but the wind is just brutal. Tuesday the 22nd of July morning has a 6 ft NE swell, but with a 16 mph cross wind and a short 8-second period, it’s only going to appeal to the kite surfers.
So, to wrap it up: the clear standout is Monday the 13th of July morning. Get on that 6 ft S swell before the wind ruins it. Sunday the 12th is also a ripper, and Tuesday the 14th morning is a glassy gem.
Stay salty,
Rusty
