G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about Rosa. We’ve got a solid run of surf on the cards, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag to start, so let’s get into it.

The overall pattern shows a decent pulse of south-southeast swell kicking things off this Saturday afternoon with 8 ft of south swell and an 11-second period. The combined energy is strong at 1604, so there’s plenty of push, but the wind is a cross-shore from the south at 9 mph, which is putting a slight cross-chop on the surface. The water temp is 61°, which is 5° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s much colder than normal, so you’ll want a thicker suit.

Sunday morning 5th July is the real standout early on. We’ve got 7 ft of south swell, still with that 11-second period, and it’s glassy with a light northeasterly breeze at just 3 mph. The energy is still hefty at 984, and the conditions are set to be clean and lined up. This is the best session of the opening days – get out there early. The break is exposed to the swell and the optimum direction is SE, so this south swell is working nicely.

Monday and Tuesday drop off in size, with 4 ft to 5 ft, but there are still clean windows. Tuesday morning 7th July has 5 ft of south swell at a short 7-second period, so the waves will be a bit weaker and more disorganised, but the cross-offshore wind from the SSW at 9 mph keeps it tidy. Energy is moderate at 439.

Midweek, Wednesday 8th July morning is a nice little session with 4 ft of south swell, 9-second period, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW at 3 mph. It’s clean and fun for the intermediate surfer.

We hit a lull from Thursday 9th July through to Saturday 11th July morning – the swell drops to 2 ft to 3 ft with weak energy (under 250) and mostly onshore or cross-shore winds. Not much to get excited about there.

But then we get a proper pulse of long-period groundswell. Saturday 11th July afternoon brings 4 ft of ESE swell with a 13-second period and glassy conditions. The combined energy jumps to 724, and the waves should have some real shape and power. This is a standout for the second half of the outlook. Sunday 12th July morning is the best of this run: 5 ft of ESE swell at 13 seconds, glassy with a light SSW breeze at 3 mph, and energy up at 1072. That’s excellent for experienced surfers – long, clean lines, though with that long period, it could be a bit straight at the beach, so look for a point or reef if you can. Crowds are only sometimes a problem here, so you should find some space.

Monday and Tuesday 13th-14th July fade back to small clean waves under 2 ft, then there’s a gap of a couple of days with very weak surf until we get a new south swell on Thursday 16th July. That’s 8 ft of south swell with an 8-second period, a short period swell that will be a bit choppy, but the cross-offshore wind from the SW at 9 mph keeps it rideable for the experienced crew. Energy is strong at 827, but the quality is marginal due to the short period.

Friday 17th July stays in the 5 ft to 6 ft range with clean cross-offshore winds, but the winds pick up to 16 mph by the afternoon, making it blustery. Saturday 18th July morning is the last real highlight in the 16-day window: 4 ft of south swell at 11 seconds, cross-offshore breeze from the WSW at 9 mph, energy at 580, and the conditions are clean. It’s a solid swell with good shape for a fun session.

After that, the swell drops off again into small, clean leftovers for Sunday 19th July.

Best on offer? Sunday morning 5th July for the glassy, clean 7 ft south swell, and Sunday morning 12th July for that longer-period ESE groundswell with perfect glassy conditions. Don’t miss those windows.

Rusty.
