The Lowdown
Rusty here, giving you the skinny on Mystos. The next couple weeks start slow, but there's some heavy water on the horizon if you've got the patience.
Right off the bat, not much happening. The water is a touch warmer than usual for the season at 68°. Wednesday afternoon has a weak 2ft SSE swell, with combined energy at 123. Glassy, but not worth paddling out. Thursday morning is even smaller. Friday gets blown out with increasing cross-onshore wind.
The first real sign of life is Saturday morning, August 8th. We get a jump to a 7ft SSE swell with a very long 14-second period and 1773 combined energy. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNE, so it should be looking good. This is serious groundswell, and at that size, it's for the experienced crew only. The afternoon stays clean at 6ft.
Sunday and Monday are messy with onshore winds and shorter period, making for choppy conditions.
Circle your calendar for Tuesday the 11th and Wednesday the 12th. Tuesday morning delivers a clean 7ft SSE swell with a 12-second period and cross-offshore winds. The combined energy is 1177. It's excellent and clean for experienced surfers. Wednesday the 12th morning is nearly identical: 7ft SSE, 12 seconds, clean cross-offshore wind, and 1190 combined energy. These are the best two windows of the whole outlook. Crowds can show up at Mystos, so plan to be early.
After a mid-week lull, the big stuff fires up again. Monday the 17th has a massive 10ft ENE swell with a clean cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is a whopping 2479. This is huge. The afternoon glasses off with 8ft ENE and only a light air – it'll be a sight to see, but only for experts.
The session fades out by the 20th, with the swell dropping to 3ft and a lumpy cross-chop.
My top pick is the morning of Wednesday the 12th. It's got it all: clean conditions, strong long-period groundswell, and solid size. Tuesday the 11th morning is right there with it. Get after it.
Rusty.
