The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Prainha dos Molhes (Escondido). It’s a beach and jetty setup, exposed to the swell, and it’s an intermediate-friendly spot. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus.

The next few days are pretty average. Wednesday morning (5th August) is surfable but very ordinary, with a weak 3ft SSE swell and a cross-off wind. The afternoon goes glassy, with 2ft SSE swell – clean, but tiny. The combined wave energy is weak (123). Thursday morning (6th) is glassy with only 2ft – it’s a real struggle. Thursday afternoon turns onshore, and it’s pretty poor.

Friday (7th) gets a bit of a kick with a 5ft S swell in the afternoon, but the wind is strong and cross-off, and the period is short at 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (265), but the conditions are rated poor. Saturday morning (8th) sees a 6ft S swell with a 12-second period, but the onshore wind is howling at 22 mph, and the energy is strong (1138), but it’s messy.

Now we get to the real action. Sunday (9th August) is the standout. The morning starts with a clean 4ft SSE swell, 12-second period, and a moderate offshore wind. The combined energy is moderate (628). But the afternoon is where it’s at: a 6ft S swell with an 11-second period, clean cross-off winds, and strong energy (1273). This is excellent for experienced surfers. The swell direction (S) is a good match for the optimum SE direction, and the offshore wind will keep it clean.

Monday (10th) is also very good. Offshore winds all day, with a 5ft S swell, 12-13 second period, and moderate to strong energy (686-785). This is a solid, clean option. Tuesday (11th) holds up with 5-5ft S swell, cross-off winds, and moderate energy (430-486). Clean and fun.

Wednesday (12th) morning looks good again with a 6ft SSE swell, 12-second period, and light cross-off wind. The energy is strong (788). The afternoon turns cross-on, so the morning is the call.

After that, it gets a bit mixed. Thursday (13th) and Friday (14th) have some decent swell but the conditions are marginal, with cross-on or cross-off winds. The Thursday afternoon has a huge 6ft SSE swell with a very long 15-second period and very strong energy (1716), but the wind is light cross, so it might be a bit straight for the beach break. It’s a good option for the experienced crew.

The second week starts to fade. Saturday (15th) and Sunday (16th) are poor with strong onshore winds. Monday (17th) is a big note: a 10ft ENE swell is predicted, with clean cross-off winds, but it's simply too big for this break. That’s for experts only, and even then, it might be pushing it.

Tuesday (18th) morning is the other true standout. A 7ft E swell, 10-second period, glassy conditions, and strong energy (1117). This is excellent for experienced surfers. The swell is solid, the wind is dead calm, and it’s clean. The afternoon turns onshore, so get out early.

The rest of the week is poor with strong onshore or cross-on winds, except for Thursday (20th) which sees a return to clean conditions with a gentle offshore wind and a 3ft S swell, and a glassy afternoon with a 4ft ENE swell. Not big, but clean to finish.
