The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s a bit of a slow start for the first few days. The weekend is looking pretty average, with a small, short-period ENE swell mucking around at Itapiruba South Side. The wind is a bit fresh out of the NE on Saturday afternoon, creating some bumps, and the swell is only 5.2ft but with a weak 6 second period, so it’s not going to be much fun. The water’s sitting at 66.6°, which is about average for this time of year.
We’ve got a real gap in quality surf from Sunday the 2nd right through the week. The swell stays small and inconsistent, and the wind is onshore or cross-shore for most of that time. Monday the 3rd sees a slight improvement with a gentle offshore, but you’re still looking at waist-high, weak stuff. It’s not going to get you out of bed.
The real action, and I mean the *real* action, starts to build around the second week. Keep your eyes on Thursday the 13th of August. That morning, we’ll see a solid 9.8ft S groundswell rolling in with a long 13-second period. The combined energy is massive at 5032, and with a light E cross-offshore wind, the conditions are going to be clean. This is expert territory though – that size is only for the very experienced. The afternoon drops a bit to 8.2ft, still excellent, but again, for the skilled crew.
Friday the 14th is also a standout. The swell hangs in at 7.2-7.5ft from the SSE, with a moderate offshore wind from the ENE. It’s a touch smaller than the peak, but still a solid, powerful swell that’ll be well-shaped and clean. The following Saturday morning, the 15th, looks like a sneaky good one for the more intermediate surfer, with the swell settling to 5.6ft and glassy conditions – that’s the pick of the bunch for the weekend crew.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The standout is clearly Thursday the 13th for the big-wave chargers, with Friday the 14th and Saturday morning the 15th as the next best options for cleaner, slightly smaller conditions.
