Table - best surf conditions forecast for Praia da Vila over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a rough start. The first few days are a write-off. Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th are a mess – poor surf conditions and a messy, choppy ocean with a combined energy reading of 1008 (moderate) on Sunday dropping to 540 (moderate) on Monday. The water is sitting at a chilly 59°, which is a huge 7° colder than normal for this time of year – that’s really unusual, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
Things finally turn a corner on Tuesday the 14th. That’s our standout. Praia da Vila wakes up with a glassy morning, light NNW wind, and a solid 6ft south-east swell rolling in at 10 seconds. The combined energy is 662 (moderate). By afternoon, the wind goes gentle offshore from the NE, keeping it clean. The sets should have some shape. Crowds are possible here, so get out early.
Wednesday the 15th holds in with a 6ft east swell and clean conditions through the morning, though the wind is cross-offshore. The energy drops a bit to 608 (moderate). After that, the surf slowly fades through the rest of the week. From Thursday the 16th into Friday the 17th, we’re looking at knee-to-waist high waves, with periods stretching out to 11-12 seconds. That long period will make it a bit fat and straight-breaking, but with clean offshore winds, it’s still rideable, just not exciting.
The following weekend (Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th) sees a small bump of 6ft from the ENE on Saturday morning, but the period is short (8 seconds) and the energy is only 458 (moderate). It’s clean, but ordinary. Sunday afternoon is flat.
The next week kicks off with a promising morning on Monday the 20th – 5ft ENE swell, light NNW wind, and clean conditions. The energy is 353 (moderate). It’s a decent chance for a session. Tuesday the 21st is messy with light rain and cross-onshore winds, but the afternoon cleans up with a gentle offshore from the NE and 4ft swell.
The real highlight of the second week looks like Wednesday the 22nd. That morning we’ve got a 7ft south swell with a 9-second period, clean conditions, and a massive energy spike to 1410 (strong). That’s a lot of water moving around. It’s pushing into the 6ft+ range, so it’s more for the experienced crew. By afternoon it’s 6ft from the south with a longer 11-second period and moderate offshore winds – still good, but the energy drops to 888 (moderate).
From Thursday the 23rd onward, it’s a slow fade again. The wind turns onshore and the swell backs off. Friday the 24th has a brief glassy morning with 4ft from the south, but it’s small and the afternoon goes offshore and clean but tiny. The last few days of the outlook are mostly flat or very weak, with a tiny 3ft south swell on Monday the 27th that might give you a few ankle-biters.
So, the real pick is Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 22nd. Tuesday is the cleaner, more accessible day for intermediates, while Wednesday the 22nd is the bigger, more powerful option for the experienced crew.
Rusty.
