Table - best surf conditions forecast for Praia da Vila over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Praia da Vila over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, the first few days are a write-off. Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th are a mess – onshore winds, funky conditions, and the swell is just bad news. Not worth paddling out. You’re looking at a gap of a couple of days there with no real recommendations.
The real standout, and I mean the one to circle on the calendar, hits on Tuesday the 14th. The morning is glassy as a mirror – zero wind, clean lines. Swell is a solid 6 ft from the SE with a period of 10 seconds, giving it a nice shape. The energy is moderate (868). It’s a sandbar break, very consistent, and the crowd factor is there (“sometimes”), so expect a few heads. But for an intermediate, this is the best paddle of the week. By the afternoon, the wind swings offshore from the NE at 12 mph, the swell bumps up to 7 ft, and the energy jumps to strong (1035). That’s expert territory – big, clean, and powerful. If you’ve got the skill, you’ll be tearing it up.
The next few days, Wednesday the 15th through Friday the 17th, are smaller and more marginal. The swell drops to around 4 ft to 5 ft, period goes long (10-11 seconds), which means good shape but longer waits between sets. Winds are mostly offshore or cross-off, so it’s clean, but the energy is weak to moderate (350-500 range). It’s surfable, but nothing to get emotional about. The break is consistent, so you’ll get waves, but they won’t be the highlight.
Saturday the 18th shows a pulse again – 5 ft from the ENE, period only 8 seconds (short period, choppier), but with a moderate offshore wind in the afternoon and moderate energy (420). It’s a decent option, but not the best.
Then we hit a flat spell. Sunday the 19th through Monday the 20th is tiny – 1.0 ft on Sunday, and a weird mix on Monday. Almost nothing to ride.
The second week starts to pick up again. Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd bring back 4 ft to 5 ft ENE swell, period only 8 seconds, but with clean conditions and light offshore winds. Energy is in the low to moderate range (227-352). It’s solid, consistent surf for the intermediate surfer, but nothing that will blow your mind.
Thursday the 23rd morning is glassy again with 4 ft ENE swell, but the wind swings onshore by the afternoon. Friday the 24th is similar, glassy morning, light cross-on in the afternoon.
Now, here’s the long-range promise. Saturday the 25th looks like a banger. A solid 6 ft swell from the S, with a very long period of 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The energy is strong (1036). Winds are light and offshore from the NE in the morning, and continuing offshore in the afternoon. This is a point-break-style swell, so for a sandbar, it might be a bit too straight, but the quality is there. It’s a standout for the second week, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th fade off with onshore winds and dropping quality. The swell is still there, but the wind is on it.
So, to sum it up: Tuesday the 14th is your best bet for the near term – glassy morning, then big offshore afternoon for experts. For the second week, Saturday the 25th has the most promise, but it’s a long-range call. The break is consistent, so when it’s on, it’s on, but don’t expect a classic point break.
Rusty.
