The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good look at what Praia da Vila has cookin’ for us over the next couple weeks.
Right off the bat, don't bother paddling out yet. The first couple of days are pretty flat and messy. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th have barely a ripple with onshore junk and zero score. You’re better off waxing your board and waiting.
Thursday the 20th morning is where we see the first little flicker of hope. It’s small, just 3 ft from the south, but we’ve got a gentle offshore breeze from the NNE cleanin’ it up. The combined energy is moderate at 214, so there’s a bit of push. It’s not gonna blow your mind, but it’s rideable and clean – a good one for the intermediates to get a few soft ones.
Friday and Saturday bring more size but crap winds. Saturday morning the 22nd bumps up to 6 ft from the south (584 combined energy), but it’s onshore and messy. That’s when it starts to look more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle session for the beach break here.
Now, Sunday the 24th is where things get interesting. Monday the 24th morning has some proper 8 ft south swell rollin’ in with a long 13-second period. The combined energy jumps right up to 2512, which is strong. The wind is light and onshore though, so it’s a bit lumpy. Still, that’s a lot of water moving.
But the real standout – the one you wanna circle on your calendar – is Tuesday the 25th. The morning session is firing. We’ve got a solid 7 ft south swell, a long 13-second period, and a gentle offshore from the NNE. The water’s clean, the lines will have some shape, and the combined energy is a hefty 1376. This is excellent for experienced surfers. It’s a bit much for beginners, but for the crew who know what they’re doing, this is the best on offer. Crowds are possible here, so get out early.
Wednesday the 26th morning is also worth a mention. The swell drops a touch to 4 ft but the period stretches way out to 16 seconds – that’s groundswell from the SE. Combined energy is still strong at 1117. With a light cross-offshore breeze from the north, it’ll be glassy and clean. That long period will make for some nice, lined-up walls, especially on the better parts of the beach.
After that, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday the 27th stays clean and fun with chest-high waves, but the energy starts to fade. There’s a gap of mediocre stuff from Friday the 28th through most of the next week, with onshore winds and rain spoiling the party. A solid 8 ft pulse shows up again on Tuesday the 1st of September, but the onshore wind kills it.
We do get one last little cheer on Wednesday the 2nd of September morning. The swell sits at 6 ft from the east, with a light cross-offshore breeze and combined energy of 606. It’s clean and has some punch – good for a sneaky end-of-outlook session.
So to sum it up: if you’ve got the skills, Tuesday the 25th morning is your winner. Wednesday the 26th morning is a close second for clean, long-period lines. The rest of the window has a few okay moments, but nothin’ else really stands out as a must-surf.
Stay stoked, and I’ll see you in the water.
