Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Praia da Vila.
The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag, with some real quality windows but also a fair bit of wind and swell to work through. The first few days look pretty average, so don’t rush to wet a line just yet. The standout is shaping up to be Wednesday the 8th July, and then again on Saturday the 11th July.
Water temps are sitting right around average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the thickest rubber.
Monday 6th July is a write-off. We’ve got a 4ft SE swell but the wind is all over the place – cross-off in the morning but then swinging onshore and throwing in light rain in the afternoon. The combined energy is moderate (590 in the morning, dropping to 420), but the conditions just aren’t there. Leave it.
Tuesday 7th July isn’t much better. Morning sees a 5ft S swell with a short 8 second period, and the wind is directly onshore. That’s a messy combo. The afternoon drops to 4ft S, but the wind goes cross-shore. Still looks poor. Not worth it.
Wednesday 8th July – now we’re talking. The morning is glassy, with a clean 4ft S swell and a nice long 12 second period. The combined energy is a solid 597, and the wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the pick of the first week. The afternoon stays clean with a light offshore breeze from the NE, 4ft S swell, and 11 second period. It’s a solid day from start to finish.
Thursday 9th July drops off a bit. The swell is smaller at 3ft from the ESE, with a 10 second period and clean conditions in the morning. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. The afternoon is similar with 2ft.
Friday 10th July is small and a bit ordinary. Morning glass with 3ft ESE swell, but it’s just not packing much punch (energy at 159). The afternoon gets a little bump with a cross-shore wind and a 3ft ESE swell with an 11 second period, but it’s marginal.
Saturday 11th July is the other real standout. The morning is clean with a 4ft ESE swell and a very long 13 second period. Combined energy is 589, and the conditions are described as “very good.” This is a groundswell, so it’ll have long waits between sets, but the shape should be excellent. The afternoon holds up with the same swell, a bit more energy (669), and clean conditions. A top day.
Sunday 12th July gets messy again. A 4ft S swell with 12 second period, but the wind is cross-onshore in the morning and swings to onshore with heavy rain in the afternoon. The energy is high (835) but the quality is poor.
Monday 13th July is a big, ugly day. 10ft S swell with a 9 second period and a fresh 19 mph onshore wind. Combined energy is 1750 – that’s strong wave energy. But it’s blown out and messy. This is for experts only, if anyone, and honestly, it looks more like a kiteboarding day than a paddle session.
Tuesday 14th July is similar, with a 8ft SSE swell and strong onshore winds. Poor conditions again.
Wednesday 15th July sees the swell drop to 6ft SSE. The morning has a cross-onshore wind, so it’s marginal. But the afternoon turns it around with a cross-offshore breeze and clean conditions, and the energy is still decent (604). A small window of quality.
Thursday 16th July to Saturday 18th July is a drop-off. Swell sizes are between 2ft and 5ft, mostly from the SE, with offshore or cross-off winds. The energy is low to moderate. It’s clean, but small. A good time for a longboard or a beginner.
Sunday 19th July brings a big pulse. 8ft ENE swell with a 9 second period and a moderate offshore wind. The combined energy is 1457. This is excellent for experienced surfers only – it’s a big, powerful wave. The offshore wind will keep it clean, but the short period (9 seconds) means it’ll be a bit crumbly. The afternoon is still solid at 7ft.
Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st July hang onto some size, with 5ft to 6ft swells from the ESE and E, with clean offshore winds. Tuesday morning looks particularly good with a 6ft E swell, moderate offshore wind, and a combined energy of 670.
So, if you’re planning a paddle, Wednesday 8th July and Saturday 11th July are your best bets for clean, fun waves. The big stuff on the 19th is for the experienced crew only.
Rusty.
