The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Praia da Vila.
We’ve got a solid run of surf coming, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The early part of the week is more for the experienced crew, with some real grunty swell, but things clean up nicely later on. The water temp is sitting at 66.9°F which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The first real action kicks off Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. We’re looking at a 6.6ft S swell, period around 11 seconds, with a light onshore breeze. It’s not the cleanest, but there’s a decent amount of energy (1022) in the water. By Sunday afternoon, the swell jumps to 7.5ft from the S, period 12 seconds, and the energy goes through the roof (1536), but that cross-onshore wind is going to chop it up a bit. It’s a bit of a messy start.
Monday, the 24th, brings more size. Morning sees a 8.2ft S swell with a long 14-second period, and a massive energy reading (3029). The wind is light onshore, but that long period groundswell will be a bit tricky on a sandbar – it might break a bit straight. The afternoon is similar, with a cross-onshore breeze making it choppy.
Now, Tuesday the 25th is where it gets interesting. The swell drops to a more manageable 6.2ft from the S, period 12 seconds, but the wind is the story. Tuesday morning is glassy – dead flat, clean as a whistle. That’s a major positive. The energy is still solid (1100). The afternoon gets even better with a clean offshore breeze from the NE. This is the standout window for the first week. The waves will be clean, well-shaped, and a good size for experienced surfers.
Wednesday the 26th keeps the goods coming. The swell is back up to 7.5ft from the SSE, period 14 seconds, but it’s accompanied by a moderate offshore wind all day. The energy is serious (2152 in the morning). This is big, powerful, and clean – definitely for the experts only. The current is going to be working.
Thursday the 27th sees the swell start to drop. The morning is still a decent 4.9ft from the SSE, period 13 seconds, with a clean offshore breeze. The energy is still there (805). The afternoon gets smaller and windier.
Friday the 28th is a weird one. The morning is tiny and weak (2.3ft, 111 energy), but the afternoon brings a sudden shift. A 6.9ft swell from the ENE, but with a short 8-second period, and a clean offshore wind. The energy is moderate (669). It’s a bit of a short-period windswell, so it won’t have the same punch as the groundswell earlier in the week, but it’ll be clean.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th is a bit of a downer. The swell is there, around 4.9ft to 5.6ft from the ENE, but the periods are short (9 seconds) and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The energy is low (around 400). It’s not great.
But hold on. Monday the 31st of August, the morning glass-off is back. A 6.2ft ENE swell, period 10 seconds, with zero wind. Glassy. The energy is moderate (650). This is a nice little window for a clean, fun session, though the swell direction is a bit out of the optimum.
The start of September is a write-off. The 1st is blown out with strong onshore winds, and then the 2nd brings a big, messy 9.8ft S swell with onshore winds and a huge energy reading (3562 in the afternoon). That’s a washing machine, not for paddling. The 3rd of September sees a return to clean conditions with a 6.2ft SSE swell, light winds, and good energy (766). That’s a solid session.
The second week tails off. The 4th and 5th of September are small, with weak energy and short periods. The 6th of September has a promising morning with a 5.9ft E swell and a long 11-second period, and clean conditions. The energy is good (750). That’s the best bet in the second week. The 7th is small but clean.
The Standout: If you’ve got the skills, Tuesday the 25th of August is the pick of the entire forecast. The morning glass-off with a solid 6.2ft S swell and 12-second period is going to be epic. The afternoon offshore wind is just as good. For a cleaner, more manageable option, Monday the 31st of August morning is a beauty.
