Table - best surf conditions forecast for Praia da Vila over the next 16 days.
G'day, it's Rusty here. We've got a mixed bag of a run coming up at Praia da Vila, with a solid start giving way to a bit of a lull before a promising long-range charge. That water is seriously cold for this time of year, so a good 5/4 is a must for the next few days.
Alright, let's kick things off. The first waves worth paddling for are on Thursday afternoon, July 9th. It's small, around 3 feet from the ESE, but the wind is a clean offshore from the NE, giving you some nice, clean lines. The energy is weak at 169, so you won't be getting any big grunt, but it's a surfable start.
Friday morning, July 10th, is where it starts to get interesting. The swell jumps to a clean 3 feet from the ESE, with a 12-second period (that's a nice groundswell) and the wind is glassy. The moderate energy (288) points to some fun, clean waves. This is a real standout for the early part of the forecast. Saturday morning, July 11th, is another cracker. The swell builds to 5 feet from the ESE, the period extends to a very long 13 seconds, and we've got a cross-off breeze. The energy is strong (719), and it's looking like the best of the first week. This long period will really stand up on the bank.
Sunday, July 12th, gets a bit messy. We get a 6 foot ESE swell on the morning, but it's onshore wind, making it a bit of a groaner. By the afternoon, the wind swings to a moderate cross-onshore, and the quality drops right off.
We then hit a bit of a flat patch. Monday and Tuesday, the 13th and 14th, have some waves, but the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, making it hard to get excited. Wednesday through Friday, the 15th to the 17th, is a real gap. The swell drops to tiny 1.0 to 1 feet, and while the wind is often clean, there's just not enough push for a proper surf. The energy values are in the 30s and 60s, so you're looking at a few days of flatness.
Now, here's where the long-range promise comes in. Friday afternoon, July 17th, things start to perk up again with a 5 foot pulse from the ENE and a clean offshore wind. The run from Saturday, the 18th, through to Wednesday, the 22nd, is a consistent story: 5 to 5 feet from the ENE, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is mostly offshore or cross-off, keeping it clean. The 8-second period is a bit short, so the waves will be a little more crumbly, but with clean wind, it's still fun. The energy is moderate (around 300-400), so there's enough to push you along.
The real standout of the entire second week, and possibly the whole forecast, is Thursday morning, July 23rd. We get a clean 4 feet from the S, with a 9-second period and a light offshore breeze. The energy jumps to a strong 660, and the forecast is calling for very good surf. This is the one to circle on your calendar. Friday morning, July 24th, is also a beauty, with a bigger 6 feet from the SSE and a clean cross-off breeze. The energy is 513, and it's another day of very good conditions.
For the best of the best, I'd say Saturday morning, July 11th, is your early pick, and Thursday morning, July 23rd, is the long-range bet. Both offer clean, quality surf with decent swell. Week two is a bit more of a gamble this far out, but the signs are good.
Rusty.
