Table - best surf conditions forecast for Praia da Vila over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in feet and miles per hour.
For the 16-day window, it’s a real mix. We’ve got some killer days, but also some you’ll want to sleep in for. The first real surf is this Saturday, July 11th.
Praia da Vila is the only break in the picture. It’s a very consistent sandbar, exposed to the swell and needing an SSE direction for its best form. Water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year.
Saturday morning, July 11th, is a solid start. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell from the ESE with a long 13-second period, giving it real groundswell power. The combined energy is moderate (722). The wind is cross-off from the NNE at 9 mph, so the surf is clean. This is a very good option for an intermediate surfer. The afternoon gets even better, turning glassy as the wind drops to nothing from the SSE. The swell drops to 3ft, but the period stays long at 13 seconds. The energy is weaker (499), but the glassy conditions make it a real pleasure.
Sunday, July 12th, is a total write-off. The morning is onshore and the afternoon is a mess with 16 mph winds from the SSW and poor surf. Skip it.
Monday, July 13th, is also poor. Onshore winds and a short, choppy 7ft swell from the S. The energy is moderate (1199), but the quality is gone. Not worth it.
Tuesday, July 14th, is the standout of the first week. The morning is glassy with a 7ft swell from the SE, a 10-second period, and strong energy (1034). This is excellent for experienced surfers—it’s a solid size and the conditions are perfect. The afternoon keeps it going with a 7ft ESE swell and a fresh offshore wind from the NE at 12 mph. The energy is still high (967). This is the best day on offer for the first week.
Wednesday, July 15th, through Friday, July 17th, the surf is smaller but still clean. The swell hangs around 5ft to 6ft from the ESE with moderate to long periods. The wind stays offshore or cross-off, so the waves are clean. It’s a solid run of surfable, clean waves. Saturday, July 18th, the morning has a short 5ft swell from the ENE (428 energy) with offshore wind, but the afternoon drops right off to 2ft. Not much to get excited about.
Sunday, July 19th, and Monday, July 20th, are back to clean, waist-to-chest high waves from the ENE with short periods, but the wind is good. It’s consistent, but not a stand-out.
Then we hit a rough patch. Tuesday, July 21st, through Wednesday, July 22nd, is all onshore, poor surf. Don’t bother.
Thursday, July 23rd, is a big turnaround. The morning is glassy with a 7ft swell from the S, 8-second period, and strong energy (773). The afternoon is also glassy, with a 8ft S swell (893 energy). This is excellent for experienced surfers, but the short period means it’ll be a bit more walled up. It’s still a very good option.
Friday, July 24th, is a tease. The swell is 7ft from the S with a very long 12-second period and very strong energy (1306). This is a serious groundswell. But the wind is onshore in the morning and cross-onshore in the afternoon, so the quality is marginal. It’s a setup that might be better for kite surfing than paddle surfing given the size and onshore wind at a beach break.
Saturday, July 25th, is the best of the second week. The morning is clean with a cross-off breeze from the E at 3 mph, and a 6ft SSE swell with a very long 12-second period. The energy is strong (1026). This is excellent for experienced surfers. The long period will make it line up nicely at the sandbar, but you’ll want to be ready for the longer sets. The afternoon is also good, with a 5ft SE swell (717 energy) and clean conditions.
Sunday, July 26th, the wind goes onshore, and the surf is average. That’s the end of the forecast.
The standout: Tuesday, July 14th, is the best of the first week. Glassy morning, solid 7ft SE swell, strong energy. If you miss that, Saturday, July 25th, is the second-week highlight with a very clean, long-period 6ft SSE swell.
Rusty.
