Table - best surf conditions forecast for Praia da Vila over the next 16 days.
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna be a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some real gems if you pick your moments.
The first bit of proper surf we’re looking at is at Praia da Vila early Thursday morning, the 9th of July. It’s small, around 3ft from the ESE, but with a clean 10-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze from the north, it’ll be glassy and fun for a grovel. The water’s sitting at 59°, which is a whopping 7° colder than normal for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, so you’ll want a good thick wetsuit. The combined energy is moderate at 237. Thursday afternoon stays clean with offshore wind, but it drops a touch to 3ft.
Friday the 10th looks a bit of a write-off. The morning has onshore wind and the afternoon is cross-onshore and choppy, so I’d give it a miss.
Now, Saturday the 11th of July is your standout from this first week. The morning brings a solid 5ft from the ESE with a nice 13-second period, giving it proper groundswell energy. The wind is light offshore from the NNE, so it’ll be clean. The combined energy is 729 – that’s moderate to strong, and it’ll push some nice lines through. The afternoon is smaller at 3ft but still clean and fun with the same light cross-offshore breeze. This is the one to circle.
Sunday the 12th starts off with a decent 5ft again, but the wind swings onshore from the SW, and by the afternoon it’s a choppy mess with 15 mph cross-onshore winds. Monday the 13th is a write-off too – short period, 5ft to 5ft, but with onshore and cross-onshore winds creating poor conditions.
Tuesday the 14th offers a bit of a reset. The morning is 4ft from the SE with a clean cross-offshore breeze, and the afternoon gets a solid 4ft from the SE with a proper offshore wind from the NE. It’s clean, but only moderate energy.
We then hit a bit of a lull from Wednesday the 15th through to Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th – surf stays small, between 2ft and 3ft, with clean conditions but not much push. The 16th is particularly poor.
The next real standout comes a week later, on Sunday the 19th of July. The morning delivers a solid 6ft from the ENE, with a light offshore wind from the NNE. The combined energy jumps to 948 – strong energy. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit punchy and dumpy on the sandbar, but for the size and the clean conditions, it’s going to be firing. This is good for experienced surfers – over 5ft, so it’s a bit much for beginners. The afternoon stays good at 6ft, and Monday the 20th morning has 5ft with clean offshore winds and strong energy (617). That whole weekend into Monday is the pick of the second week.
After that, it drops off again. The last few days of the forecast have very small waves, under 3ft, with some clean conditions but not enough size to get excited about. The 24th of July has a tiny 1ft swell with a 14-second period from the SSE – that’s very long period but almost no height, so it’s a non-starter.
So, to sum it up: Saturday the 11th morning is your best bet for the first week – clean, chest-high groundswell. Sunday the 19th morning is the big one for the second week – nearly 7ft, clean, and powerful, but one for the more experienced crew.
Rusty.
