The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s have a good look at what’s shaping up at Praia da Vila. The water’s sitting at 67°, which is a full 2° warmer than usual for this time of year – you’ll definitely notice that difference when you paddle out.
First up, there’s a bit of action on Thursday morning the 20th. We’ve got a 3 ft swell from the ENE, period at 8 seconds, and a light offshore breeze from the NE. The combined energy is weak (234), so it’s not a standout, but it’s the only clean window in the first few days. After that, things go quiet – Friday through Sunday are all onshore or cross-onshore winds with poor surf, so you’re better off waiting.
Now, the real highlight lands on Monday the 24th. That morning brings a solid 10 ft swell from the south, with a very long period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. Combined energy is massive at 5267, so this is a powerful, deep-water swell. The wind is light and variable, but it’s onshore from the SW, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy. This is expert-only territory – that size and period will be too much for most, and a beach break like this could be a handful. It’s marginal, but for the experienced crew, there’s some serious juice.
Tuesday the 25th is the best bet for the intermediate crowd. The swell drops to 7 ft from the south, period 13 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE. The energy is strong (1355), and the wind keeps it clean. This is an excellent window for experienced surfers. Wednesday the 26th keeps the good run going: 5 ft to 6 ft from the SSE, period 15 seconds – very long period again – with a gentle offshore from the NNE. That’s clean, glassy-looking surf, and combined energy is still robust (1282–1475). The wind stays offshore all day Thursday too, but the swell fades a bit.
After that, there’s a dry spell. Friday the 28th drops to tiny 2 ft – not worth paddling out. Saturday and Sunday the 29th–30th see a new swell from the ENE, but it’s short period (9 seconds) and the wind is messy. Monday the 31st is onshore and rainy, so forget it.
Into the first week of September, we get another pulse. Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th bring a 8 ft to 8 ft swell from the S/SSW, period 10–12 seconds, but the wind is light and onshore or cross-onshore for most of it. Friday afternoon, though, the wind goes glassy – absolutely flat calm – and the swell is 7 ft from the south at 12 seconds. That’s an excellent window for experienced surfers, with clean, glassy conditions and strong energy (1386). That’s a hidden gem at the end of the forecast.
Overall, the standout is Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th – clean, offshore winds, solid south swell, and good energy. The Monday the 24th is for the brave only. Keep an eye on that Friday the 4th afternoon too – glassy conditions and a decent swell could be a surprise.
