The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the cards for Praia da Vila. It’s a bit of a slow start, so don’t be in a rush to grab your board just yet.
The first few days are a write-off. Monday the 17th through to Saturday the 22nd of August are mostly a no-go. We’ve got some small, messy swell and the wind is just not playing ball. You’ll see a bit of activity on the charts, but the conditions are poor, so it’s not worth the paddle out. There’s a long gap of almost a week before anything worth mentioning shows up.
The real action kicks off on Sunday the 23rd. That morning is the standout for the first week. The swell picks up to a clean 6 ft from the south with a solid 11-second period, and the wind goes glassy. The energy is moderate (740), and the waves are going to be well-shaped and clean. This is the one to circle. The afternoon stays rideable but gets a bit bumpy with a cross-onshore breeze.
Monday the 24th sees a bigger, punchier 7 ft to 8 ft south swell, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. This is getting into the size range where it’s only for the experienced crew, and the quality isn’t quite there to make it a top pick.
Now, Tuesday the 25th of August is another standout. The swell drops slightly to 7 ft from the south, but the period stretches out to a long 12 seconds. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNE, and the wave energy is strong (1277). This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The morning is the pick of the day, with clean, powerful lines. The afternoon gets a bit windier, but still holds up.
The rest of the week from Wednesday the 26th through to Saturday the 29th of August offers consistent, fun-sized surf. Swells hang around the 4 ft to 6 ft range, with clean offshore winds most of the time. It’s not the biggest, but it’s reliable and good for a session. The morning of Saturday the 29th is particularly glassy, so that’s a nice bonus.
Looking further ahead, Sunday the 30th of August brings another nice pulse. The swell is 4 ft from the south with a long 11-second period, and the wind is clean cross-offshore. The afternoon gets a bit smaller, but the period jumps to 14 seconds, giving it some real grunt. The energy is moderate (661). Then, Monday the 31st of August is a big one for the experts. The swell is 6 ft from the SSE, but the period is a very long 14 seconds, and it’s glassy calm. The combined energy is very strong (1637). This is going to be a powerful, clean groundswell, but it’s best suited for the experienced as it’ll be more suited to the point and reef setups. The surging sets will make paddling easier, but the power is real.
The water temperature sits at 65°F, which is right on the money for this time of year – nothing unusual there.
So, to wrap it up: the standout sessions are the morning of Sunday the 23rd of August and the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August. After that, the last week of the month and into September has a consistent run of clean, fun surf with a few bigger, more powerful days for the experienced crew.
Rusty.
