The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Itapiruba North Side over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week is a real struggle. We’re looking at a whole lot of nothing for days. From Friday the 31st, right through to the middle of the following week, the surf is poor. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the swell is either small or messy. Saturday the 2nd of August afternoon gives us a tiny glimpse of hope with a clean 3ft swell from the ENE and a gentle offshore wind, but honestly, it’s barely surfable. It’s gonna be a grind.

Things start to perk up a bit on Tuesday the 5th of August. The morning brings a clean 3ft SSE swell at 11 seconds with light cross-offshore winds, and it gets even better in the afternoon. The wind goes glassy, the swell holds at 3ft, and the energy is moderate (270). That’s your best bet for a proper, clean little session in the first week. The water is sitting at 67°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so nothing wild there.

The real story, though, is the second week. We’ve got a couple of absolute standouts. First up, Thursday the 14th of August morning. The wind is dead calm, glassy as a mirror, and the swell is a solid 10ft from the SSW. That’s a big, powerful groundswell with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is massive (2463). This is proper, expert-level stuff. It’s going to be a heavy, powerful day at Itapiruba North Side, so if you’re not comfortable in big, clean surf, sit this one out.

Then, if you can believe it, the following Saturday the 16th of August is the true standout. The morning sees a staggering 16ft S groundswell with a 16-second period. The energy reading is off the charts at 20279. The wind is a clean cross-offshore. This is a massive, long-period groundswell. For a setup that’s a beach and point, this kind of period can make it break a bit straight, but on a day like this, the power and the clean conditions will be something else. It’s only for the hardcore, experienced crew. The afternoon is almost as good, with a 15ft swell and energy of 13230. This is the kind of swell you tell stories about.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off with a tiny window on the 5th. The second week, however, is a proper bomb. Don’t sleep on the 14th, but the 16th of August is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s looking *very* promising, but it’s a long way out, so we’ll keep an eye on it.

Rusty.
