The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are looking like a bit of a mixed bag around here. We’ve got a real standout day coming up, but you’ll need to pick your moments. This is a rare-breaks kinda wave, so when the stars align, it’s worth making the paddle. It’s a point break, and it’s rarely breaking, so let’s see when it’s gonna turn on.

The surf window kicks off this Saturday morning (August 22nd) with chest-high, 6ft southerly swell rolling in with a clean 10-second period. The offshore wind is light, keeping the surface clean, and the swell energy is moderate at 596. It’s not a classic, but it’s a solid start to the weekend. The afternoon sees the wind shift to a cross-offshore breeze, and it does drop off a touch, so it gets a bit more marginal.

Sunday morning (August 23rd) looks good too. The swell eases to 4ft, but the period stretches out to 11 seconds from the south, and that light cross-offshore wind keeps it clean. The energy dips a little, but there’s still a couple of fun ones to be had.

Now, here’s your standout. Monday morning, August 24th, is the one to circle. We’ve got 7ft of south swell at 14 seconds, which is proper groundswell, and the combined energy is strong at 1693. The wind is light and offshore, so it’s going to be clean with some nice, long-period lines. This is going to be excellent surf for experienced surfers. This is a point break, so it should hold up well with the long period. If you’re not too experienced, this is probably a bit too much, but for the rest of you, this is the best wave on offer. The afternoon backs off a little, but the morning is the call.

After that, it fades into a bit of a lull. Tuesday morning (August 25th) has a glassy 5ft swell, but the energy is dropping, and by the afternoon it gets a bit messy. Wednesday and Thursday are poor, with onshore winds taking the shine off anything that’s left.

Then, we get another fun little pulse on Friday morning, August 28th. It’s a small 5ft swell, but it’s from a new ENE direction with a short 8-second period. It’s glassy as, and the energy is back up a bit at 384. The afternoon is also clean with a cross-offshore breeze. Not big, but fun and clean on a rare-breaking point.

The weekend of August 29th and 30th is mostly a write-off with onshore winds. We’ll see some small, poor waves, then a bit of a clean-up on the Sunday, but it's pretty much tiny, 3ft stuff. Honestly, not worth getting wet for unless you’re desperate.

The first of September is really small, and the start of the month looks like a gap of a few days with no real surf to get excited about.

We do see another pulse in the water around Wednesday afternoon, September 2nd, with some clean, small waves, but nothing special. Then, there’s a punch of south swell on Thursday, September 3rd – 5ft with a 13-second period and moderate energy at 964, but the winds are cross-shore, so it loses a lot of its appeal. Friday morning, September 4th, has some glassy 4ft waves which are a nice way to finish the week, but it’s all small stuff.

By the time we get to that second week, it’s pretty quiet. The last week of the forecast shows a real drop-off. The 6th of September has a tiny 2ft south swell, and it’s onshore. It’s pretty dead out there, to be honest. For a spot that rarely breaks, it’s not looking like it’s going to be doing much for a while after this initial pulse. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no wild claims there.

So, there you have it. The standout is unmistakably Monday, August 24th, morning. Get on it. After that, a couple of clean windows on the 28th, but it’s all downhill from there for a week or more.

Rusty.
