The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough forecast for Lambe Lambe. For the first week and a half or so, we’re looking at a real dry spell. The swell is there, but it’s mostly onshore junk with poor conditions, so honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for until the 22nd of July. That’s a solid six-day gap at the start with no recommendations.

The whole outlook is a slow burn, but it does eventually get good. The first real flicker of hope comes on the morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July. The wind goes light offshore from the SSW, and the swell is a tiny 3ft from the ENE, wrapping in at 8 seconds. Clean, but small. By the afternoon, it turns glassy – calm as a pond – with a 3ft swell from the south. It’s still ordinary, but it’s the first day you could actually get a few.

Then things start to ramp up. Thursday the 23rd of July is where it begins to turn on. We’ve got a gentle to moderate offshore breeze from the south, a 3ft groundswell from the south, and the period jumps to 11 seconds. That’s proper energy, and the combined swell energy is moderate (318). The waves are clean and well-shaped for a point break like Lambe Lambe. Crowds are always a factor here, so don’t expect to have it to yourself.

The standout window is Friday the 24th of July through the weekend. Friday morning brings a 6ft south swell with a moderate offshore wind, and the combined energy jumps to 508. That’s a solid step up. It’s a little punchy for beginners, but intermediate surfers will love it. By Saturday the 25th of July, it’s glassy – a light ESE breeze in the morning, then dead calm in the afternoon. The swell holds at 5ft from the SSE, with a 11-second period, and the energy is strong (519). This is the best on offer. The waves will have good shape, long lines, and the point will handle that long-period groundswell beautifully. The offshore wind from the optimum direction (SSE) is dead on.

Sunday the 26th of July morning is still glassy and clean, with a 4ft south swell and a very long 12-second period. The energy is still strong (369). It’s a little smaller, but still a great session. The afternoon turns cross-onshore, so get in early.

There’s a gap again from Monday the 27th of July through Tuesday the 28th, with onshore wind and weak, short-period swell. Not worth it.

But then we get a second wave of quality. Wednesday the 29th of July brings a 7ft south swell with a moderate offshore wind. The energy is solid (544). That’s getting big – over 5ft, so it’s for intermediate and above only. The real standout of the second week is Thursday the 30th of July. Morning: a 6ft south swell, 10-second period, light offshore wind, and a massive combined energy of 1096. That’s very strong wave energy. The afternoon is glassy with a 5ft south swell at 12 seconds, energy of 692. This is the best session of the whole outlook. It’s big, clean, and powerful. Only for experts at that size, but if you’ve got the skills, this is the day.

Friday the 31st of July morning is still glassy with a 5ft south-southeast swell at 11 seconds, but the wind turns onshore in the afternoon, so get your session in early.

The water temperature at Lambe Lambe is a very unusual 61°F, which is 5°F colder than normal for this time of year. That’s a notable chill, so don’t forget a thick wetsuit.

So, to sum it up: the best sessions are Saturday the 25th of July and Thursday the 30th of July. Both offer glassy conditions, solid swell, and good direction. The rest of the window is a slow start and a few gaps, but it does deliver.

Rusty.
