The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. For most of this run, we’re staring at a flat spell with weak, short-period windswell from the ENE and onshore winds messing things up. But hold on, the second week has a proper pulse of south groundswell that lines up with clean offshores, and that’s where the magic is.
Right now through to around the 20th of August, it’s pretty grim. Lambe Lambe is a point break that rarely breaks, and for the first several days the swell is weak, the wind is cross or onshore, and the wave energy is low to moderate. The water temp is 65°, about normal for this time of year. Nothing worth paddling out for.
The first real window opens up on Wednesday morning the 19th – we get a brief moment of offshore south wind and 3ft of short-period ENE swell, but the energy is only 130 and the conditions are described as “very ordinary.” A one-star morning at best.
From Friday the 21st, things start to shift. The swell swings to the south and the wind goes clean. Friday afternoon sees 4ft south swell (period 8 seconds, energy 269), with a cross-offshore breeze. That’s surfable, but it’s just a teaser.
The standout run begins on Saturday the 22nd. Lambe Lambe gets clean 5ft to 4ft south swell that slowly builds in period – 10 to 11 seconds – and the wind stays light and offshore or cross-offshore through the weekend. That’s proper point-break conditions. Energy climbs into the mid-400s, and it’s clean. Sunday the 23rd keeps it going: 4ft to 5ft, longer 12-second period, moderate offshore wind, energy jumping to 618. This is the kind of run that makes a rarely-breaking spot live up to its name.
But if you want the real big day, it’s Monday the 24th. Morning brings 8ft south swell with 11-second period and moderate offshore wind, energy at 1176. Then Monday afternoon hits even harder – 8ft, 12-second period, energy at 1666, described as excellent for experienced surfers. That is a very solid groundswell pulse. At over 8ft, it’s expert territory only. Long-period south groundswell tends to line up beautifully on a point break like Lambe Lambe, so the shape should be there. It’ll be a bit of a paddle, but the gaps between sets will help. Crowds are always an issue here, so expect company.
Tuesday the 25th drops back to 5ft with clean wind, still good but not the highlight. By Wednesday the 26th it’s smaller again, and from Thursday the 27th onward we’re back to short-period ENE windswell and onshore winds, with only a few brief clean moments on Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st, but those are small and weak.
Best bet: Saturday the 22nd through Monday the 24th, with Monday afternoon being the absolute standout – but only for experienced surfers. If you’re not ready for solid 8ft waves, stick to the weekend when it’s still clean and more manageable.
