The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Praia Brava. Honestly, the first nine days are a total bust. Tiny, weak swell, choppy cross-shore winds – nothing to get excited about. You’re looking at knee-high mush until the 10th of August.
Then, on Monday the 10th, we finally get a proper pulse. The energy jumps from 57 (moderate) in the morning to 167 (strong) in the afternoon. The swell is coming from the SE, which lines up nicely with the break’s best direction. The morning is glassy – dead calm – with waves around 2ft. That’s your best window. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off breeze, and the swell period hits 14 seconds, which is a real groundswell. On a sandbar, that long period can make the waves a bit straight, but with conditions that clean, you’ll still find a decent one.
Tuesday the 11th of August is also promising. Similar size – about 2ft – but with a very long 16-second period (163 energy). The wind is light and cross-off, so it’ll be clean again. Same caveat about the long period at a beach break, but the quality of the conditions makes it worth a session.
The water temp is 65°, which is dead average for this time of year – nothing unusual.
After that, the swell fades fast. The rest of the second week is mostly tiny, messy waves and onshore wind. A few little bumps of energy, but nothing to get your hopes up.
So here’s the call: the first week is a washout. The real action, such as it is, falls on Monday the 10th and Tuesday the 11th of August. Clean, glassy or cross-off conditions with a real groundswell. It’s not big, but it’s the best you’re gonna get. These blank spells don’t usually last forever, so keep checking the forecasts.
