The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again, this time for the imperial crew. Let’s break down the next 16 days.

I’ll be blunt: the surf is flat and forgettable for the whole run. Wave heights barely get above 3 ft, and the combined swell energy is weak – all readings are below 100, mostly in the double digits. This is a long, drawn-out period of small, weak surf. The first six days – from Tuesday the 15th right through Sunday the 20th – are a complete blank. Water temp is about 65°F, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year.

Your only real chance for a wave comes on Monday the 21st. During the morning, a 2ft ENE swell shows up. It’s tiny, but with a clean cross-off wind from the SSW, the surface should be glassy. Combined energy is still weak (73), so it’s just a small, clean crumble for a longboard. By the afternoon, the wind turns onshore and the quality drops.

From Tuesday the 22nd through Saturday the 26th, it’s the same story: tiny waves under 2ft, with cross and cross-off winds that keep things tidy but the waves have zero power. The swell energy drops way down.

Sunday the 27th sees the wind pick up to 18 mph from the south, which is cross-shore and will make the surface lumpy. The 2ft swell is barely worth looking at. This is more of a kite-surfing wind day than a paddle session.

The last hope is around Wednesday the 30th: a 3ft ENE swell with a cross-off wind from the NNW that will clean it up a bit. But the combined energy is still very weak (75).

So here’s your one true standout: Monday the 21st morning. A 2ft ENE swell, clean, but tiny. That’s as good as it gets. Praia Brava gets enough exposure from the east to see it, but the lack of size and energy means it’s only for the most patient surfer on a big board. Everything else is a dud. A long blank stretch at the start, and even the “better” days are pretty ordinary. Keep your expectations low and your wetsuit handy. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s a quiet run.

Rusty.
