The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, giving you the same picture in feet and miles per hour.
First week’s a bit washed out. Small waves, tricky wind. The best windows are around 5th August and then a proper pulse on the 11th that’s got some serious grunt.
Praia Mole is your only break – a sandbar, picks up swell from pretty wide directions. Water temp is about where it should be for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Starting Wednesday, 29th July – 1ft from the SSE at 12 seconds. Morning wind is offshore from the NW at 6 mph, clean but weak. Energy is low (93). Barely worth dampening the suit.
Thursday 30th afternoon goes glassy – 1ft SSE, 9 seconds. Pretty but tiny.
Friday 31st is poor, cross-off winds. Saturday 1st August bumps to 4ft from the ENE, but period is only 6 seconds and wind is moderate cross-off. Energy hits 220 but it’s a junky swell. Sunday and Monday are small and ordinary.
Tuesday 4th August morning – that’s your first real session. 2ft from the SSE at 11 seconds, glassy. Energy at 209 – clean, lined up, good for an intermediate. Not big, but the conditions make it fun.
Wednesday 5th morning – offshore from the NNW, 3ft east swell at 8 seconds. Clean but forgettable.
Then we hit a dry spell from Thursday 6th through Sunday 9th – mostly onshore or tiny swell. A glassy window on the 9th morning but the waves are barely there.
Monday 10th August – morning has moderate energy (323) but conditions are marginal. Afternoon sees 3ft SSE with a 15-second period and energy jumps to 513 – a taste of what’s next.
The standout is Tuesday 11th August morning. Swell hits 5ft from the south at 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. Energy is massive at 1395. Light cross-off wind from the SW, clean surface. This is excellent for experienced surfers. Long, powerful waves. Crowds will be a thing here, it’s that good.
Tuesday afternoon – swell even bigger at 6ft SSE (13 seconds), energy 1683, but wind turns a little cross. Morning is the pick.
Wednesday 12th – wind cranks from the SSW at 16 mph, chopping up a 4ft SSE swell. Afternoon gets too big at 7ft from the south – the forecast says it’s too big for this break. Experts only, and messy.
Thursday 13th morning – still solid at 6ft south (11 seconds) but cross-wind and energy high at 1139. Powerful but rough.
So, bottom line: Tuesday 11th August morning is the day. Tuesday 4th morning is a solid runner-up. The rest is small or sloppy. Not much to get excited about otherwise.
