The Lowdown
Alright, let’s see what we’re dealing with. Over the next sixteen days, there’s a whole lot of nothing for most of it. The first little bit of swell hits on the 14th, but don’t get your hopes up.
Barra da Lagoa is the only game in town. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, but it faces ENE and the swell is coming from the SE, so it’s not a great match. On Tuesday afternoon, the 14th, we’ve got a 6 ft SE swell with a 10-second period – that’s short-period wind swell. The wind is a light cross-on from the NNE at 6 mph, so it’s a little bumpy. The combined energy is moderate at 542. The water is a very unusual 61°, which is 5° colder than normal – that’s a serious shock to the system, so you’ll need a thick wetsuit. The score is low, and it’s described as marginal, so I’d skip it.
Wednesday the 15th is no better. Morning has a 5 ft swell but with cross-shore wind, and the afternoon drops to 4 ft with a 12 mph cross-shore, just choppy and messy. From Thursday the 16th through to the 23rd, it’s mostly tiny or flat, with poor onshore winds and no real quality. There’s a gap of several days with no recommendations – the swell just vanishes.
We get a tiny pulse on the 24th, Friday morning, with a 3 ft SSE swell, 8-second period, and light cross-shore wind, but it’s weak and ordinary. The morning of the 25th, Saturday, has a 2 ft SE swell, 9-second period, with a light offshore from the S at 3 mph, making it clean for a moment, but it’s knee-high. The combined energy is only 62, so it’s weak.
The 26th, Sunday morning, is glassy but has a tiny 1.0 ft long-period swell (15 seconds) – that’s a groundswell, but it’s too small to do anything. The afternoon of the 26th sees a 5 ft SE swell with a 7-second period, but it’s cross-on and choppy, so no good.
The 28th, Tuesday, has the biggest energy of the run: a 5 ft SSE swell with a 13-second period in the afternoon, giving a combined energy of 767 – that’s moderate-to-strong, but the wind is cross-on from the NNE at 12 mph, making it messy. The 29th, Wednesday morning, has a 3 ft SSE swell with a 14-second period (long period groundswell), light cross-shore wind, and energy of 405, but it’s still just marked as marginal.
Truth is, there’s no standout session here. The best of a bad lot is the 28th afternoon, but that wind ruins it. For a beginner spot, the 5 ft swell is at the top end of what’s comfortable, and the cross-on wind will make it lumpy. If you’re desperate, the 25th morning has clean conditions but tiny waves. Otherwise, it’s a long, flat stretch.
The setup is mostly a beach break, so with the strong onshore winds and chop, it’d be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
