The Lowdown
Alright, surfers. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, we’ve got a long, dry spell ahead. The next meaningful surf doesn’t even show up until the end of the month. For a spot like Barra da Lagoa that’s usually fairly consistent, this is a frustrating run of flatness. Water temp is sitting at 65°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first few days are a write-off. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th are all tiny, weak, and messy – nothing worth paddling out for. Thursday the 20th morning looks glassy, but with absolutely zero swell, it’s a lake. Friday the 21st through to Tuesday the 25th are all flat, clean, and empty. If you’re a beginner, you could practice pop-ups in ankle-deep dribble, but that’s about it.
We finally get a pulse on Wednesday the 26th. The morning sees a 2ft SSE groundswell with a long 14-second period, pushing moderate energy (199). The wind is cross-shore from the NNW at 12 mph, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. It’s still rated as poor, though. The afternoon picks up a bit to 3ft from the SSE with an 11-second period, and the energy jumps to 357. But it’s just a marginal call – the conditions are ordinary, and the period is long enough that the rip bowls at a beach break might not be your friend. This is the best we’ve got until the end of the month, but it’s not a standout.
Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th are a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday has some waist-high SSE swell, but the wind is choppy. Friday the 28th morning is your best bet for a clean session: 2ft from the SE, 11-second period, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NW. The energy is weak (63), but it’s surfable and clean. It’s a small day, but it’s the cleanest wave of the week.
The real standout, if you can wait for it, is Sunday the 30th. We’ve got a solid 5ft to 5ft SSE swell with a 10-second period, and the energy is strong (370 to 437). The wind is cross-offshore from the south, keeping it clean. This is the biggest, cleanest swell of the whole forecast. It’s still a marginal call for quality, but for the size and conditions, this is the one to circle on your calendar. The swell direction is from the SSE, which is a solid angle for Barra da Lagoa’s exposure. It’s too big for beginners, though, and the crowds are often an issue at this break, so expect company.
After that, the first two days of September drop back down to small, weak, and onshore, finishing the run on a flat note.
To sum it up: The first nine days are a total bust. The only real window is the last few days of the month. The best on offer is Sunday the 30th for the biggest, cleanest waves, but keep Friday the 28th morning in your back pocket if you want a quiet, glassy session.
Rusty.
