The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks in feet and miles per hour.
We’re looking at a pretty quiet start for Barra da Lagoa with a big gap of nothing until Monday morning the 24th rolls around. The water is sitting at 67°, which is basically bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Monday morning the 24th is where it finally kicks off. We’ve got a nice 4ft SSE swell rolling in with a period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy of all swells directed here is moderate (706). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SSW, keeping things clean. This is the standout of the whole forecast. The swell direction is a good match for the break’s optimum from ENE, and for a beginner spot, this is about as good as it gets. The waves will be clean and well-shaped, with long gaps between sets making paddling out easy. Just keep in mind, crowds are often here, so you might have some company.
After that, things get messy. Tuesday and Wednesday the 26th and 27th see the swell size build, but the wind turns onshore and the period drops, making conditions choppy and junky. Thursday the 27th has a 5ft SSE swell (13 seconds, moderate energy at 850), but the wind is cross and then cross-onshore, so it’s not great. Friday and Saturday are flat and poor.
We get a little blip on Tuesday morning the 1st of September with a 3ft SSE swell, but the period is short at 8 seconds, and the energy is weak (127). The wind is offshore, so it’s clean, but the waves will be small and weak. The afternoon goes glassy, but still small.
Then, on Wednesday afternoon the 2nd of September, the swell jumps to 10ft from the SSE with a period of 11 seconds and very strong energy (2124). That’s way too big for this beginner-friendly break – experts only, and even then, it’s past the limit. The wind is cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit of a bumpy mess. Not recommended.
Thursday morning the 3rd of September brings a 7ft SE swell (11 seconds, strong energy at 1031) with a light cross-offshore wind from the NW. That’s a solid, clean session for the more experienced crew, but again, it’s pushing the size limit for this spot.
The rest of the run into the second week trails off into small, weak, and often choppy surf. There’s nothing really worth chasing after the 3rd.
If you’re a beginner, your best bet is Monday morning the 24th. If you’ve got experience and don’t mind a bit of size, Thursday morning the 3rd is your call. The rest of the time, I’d be checking the wind forecasts and hoping for a change.
Rusty.
