The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this is a pretty grim stretch for Barra da Lagoa. The next week and a half is mostly flat, with a few pulses of energy that just don’t line up with decent conditions. The first real hint of a surfable wave doesn’t show up until Monday the 24th, and even then it’s a borderline call.
The water’s sitting around 67° – that’s about 1° above the norm for this time of year, so nothing too wild, just a touch warmer than usual.
Let’s break it down. We’ve got a solid blank run from now through to Sunday the 23rd. Nothing. Zero. Flat. The wind looks clean at times, especially Friday morning with a light offshore from the WSW, but without any swell, it’s just a pretty-looking lake.
Then on Monday the 24th afternoon, things wake up. A 8ft, 15-second SSE groundswell rolls in, with a massive energy reading of 2427. That’s serious power. But the catch is a bumpy cross-onshore wind from the ESE, so it’s likely to be a messy, lumpy mess. The period is long, so it’ll be better suited to a point or reef, but at Barra da Lagoa, which is a fairly exposed beach break, it’ll probably close out and be pretty unruly. That’s expert-only territory at that size.
Wednesday the 26th has a smaller, cleaner-looking window – 3ft, 15-second SE groundswell, but the wind is still cross-onshore. The energy is moderate (545), but the conditions are marginal. The best of a bad bunch might be Thursday the 27th morning, with 5ft, 13-second SSE swell and a light cross-shore wind. Energy is solid (659) but the wind is not ideal, and the quality is still just “marginal.”
After that, we get a few days of small, short-period leftovers, then a strong wind event on the 31st. A 7ft, 6-second SSE windswell hits with a 22 mph SSW cross-offshore wind. That’s a lot of wind, and the swell is short and choppy. Honestly, for a beach break, that setup screams kite-surfing conditions more than paddle surfing. Clean wind, but the wave quality for a surfboard is poor.
The very end of the forecast, on Thursday the 3rd of September morning, we finally see a tiny sliver of hope: 2ft, 9-second SSE swell with a light cross-offshore wind, and then Thursday afternoon goes glassy. The energy is weak (65 and 61), but the conditions are clean. That’s the most traditional surfable moment in the whole outlook, but it’s small.
Overall, there’s no standout day. If I had to pick one, it’s that Thursday afternoon glass-off on the 3rd for the cleanest, most user-friendly waves, though they’ll be small. For the big, powerful stuff, Monday the 24th has the size, but the wind is a deal-breaker, and it’s only for experts.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the wind shifts, and if you’re a kiter, the 31st might be your jam.
