The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about the waves around here. It’s been a grim stretch, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The forecast runs for 16 days, but we’re looking at a big gap at the start with nothing to ride. The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until about a week in, and it’s small and messy. The whole run is a struggle, but there’s one decent pulse right at the very end.
The only spot worth talking about is Barra da Lagoa. The water is 65°, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year – nothing unusual.
The first week is a dead loss. The earliest we see a bump is Monday the 26th of August, with a weak 3ft ENE swell, but the wind is cross-on and choppy, and the energy is low at 58. That’s not even worth paddling for. The best of the early stuff is the morning of Thursday the 29th of August, with a clean cross-off wind from the S, but it’s flat – no height at all.
Then we get to the big one. On Tuesday the 1st of September, the afternoon brings a solid 5ft SSE groundswell. The period is 12 seconds, so there’s some real power behind it, and the combined swell energy is a moderate 658. That’s a proper pulse. The wind is onshore from the E, which isn’t perfect for clean faces, but for a spot that’s been starved for waves, it’s a total game-changer. The swell direction is SSE, which is close to the optimum ENE direction for the break, so it should wrap in okay. This is the only real standout of the whole forecast – it’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. Don’t expect a groomed wave, but if you’re desperate, that’s your window.
The rest of the run is a bust. Even the Sunday the 30th of August has a 4ft ENE swell, but the wind is clean, and the energy is still low at 84. That’s better than nothing, but it’s a far cry from the Tuesday session.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a total write-off. The second week has a few tiny, crappy days, but the real hope is that Tuesday afternoon on the 1st of September. For a spot that’s usually fairly consistent, this is a long dry spell, but it’s not unheard of. Keep an eye on that forecast, as long-range calls can shift.
