The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Galheta.
The next few days are a write-off, I’m afraid. From Friday the 21st right through to Sunday the 23rd, there’s nothing doing – the swell is tiny and wonky, winds are onshore or cross, and the water’s just a mess. You’d be better off waxing your board and waiting.
Monday the 24th morning offers a glimmer: a solid 4ft groundswell from the SSE with a long 16-second period – that’s proper energy coming through (715 combined energy). But the wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be pristine. The water temp is around 67°, which is about average for this time of year. Still, that long period means the sets will be spaced out, and the waves will have some shape. It’s a marginal call, but if you’re keen, it’s the first real option.
Then we dry out again until Wednesday the 26th. That morning, get ready – dead calm, glassy conditions, with a 3ft SE groundswell at 15 seconds. Combined energy of 429, so plenty of push. The wind is zero, so it’s going to be silky clean. This is a standout. Wednesday afternoon gets even better: 4ft from the SSE at 14 seconds (644 combined energy) with a light cross-offshore breeze. The waves should be fun and well-shaped.
Thursday the 27th is the pick of the whole run. Morning brings a clean 5ft SSE swell at 13 seconds (937 combined energy) with a gentle offshore breeze from the north. That’s prime conditions – offshore, solid, and consistent. This is expert territory at that size, but for the crew who know what they’re doing, it’s going to be firing. The afternoon stays good but gets a bit windier.
Friday the 28th through Sunday the 30th holds 5ft to 5ft ENE windswell with short 8-9 second periods. Winds are mostly cross-off or light, so it’ll be rideable but not the same quality as the groundswell days. Crowds are possible at Galheta, so keep that in mind.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September see glassy mornings and gentle offshore winds with 4ft to 5ft ENE swell. The period drops to 8 seconds, so it’s a bit weaker, but the clean conditions will make it worth a paddle.
After Tuesday afternoon, it all fades fast. By Wednesday the 2nd, the swell drops to 2ft, and by Thursday the 3rd, it’s tiny. Friday the 4th afternoon has a little 4ft spike but with onshore wind, so it’s ordinary. Saturday the 5th sees a 6ft ENE swell (439 combined energy) but with heavy rain and strong cross-onshore winds – that’s a kite-surfing setup, not a paddler’s dream.
So, the standout days are Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. That’s your window.
Rusty.
