The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Galheta is cooking up over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a slow burn, so bear with me.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year. Not a shocker there.
The outlook starts quiet. Tuesday and Wednesday are basically a washout with tiny, weak swell and poor surf conditions. We're talking next to nothing, just a few 0.3ft to 1ft waves with short periods. The energy is basically non-existent, with readings down at 3 (Tuesday) and 33 (Wednesday afternoon). Not worth paddling out for.
Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st see a slight bump in swell, but it's still mediocre. The morning of the 20th has a tiny 3ft swell from the ENE, but the combined energy is only 94, so it's weak. The wind is clean, but the waves are just too ordinary to get excited about.
Then we hit a real dead zone. From Saturday the 22nd all the way through the morning of Monday the 31st of August, there's a massive gap with no real surf to speak of. The models are showing flat spells, and the wind is all over the place. It's a proper blank run.
Finally, the light at the end of the tunnel. The afternoon of Monday the 31st of August is the first real standout. The swell jumps to 5ft from the East, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 302 (moderate), and the wind is a light offshore from the North. That's clean, glassy conditions. This is the best on offer, but keep in mind that at 5ft, it might be a bit much for absolute beginners.
Looking further ahead to the 2nd of September, Wednesday morning and afternoon look promising. We're looking at 3ft of ENE swell with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is around 212-234. The morning is glassy and the afternoon has a clean cross-offshore breeze. That's a solid, fun size for an intermediate surfer, and it's another good option.
So, to sum it up: there's a lot of flat to get through, but the afternoon of the 31st of August and the 2nd of September are the days to circle. The rest of the forecast looks like a write-off for paddle surfing.
Rusty.
