The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. The outlook starts off a bit flat and ordinary, but there’s some real quality hiding in the second half of the forecast. We’ve got a few clean windows worth pointing your board at, so let’s break it down.
The first few days, from Thursday the 20th through to Monday the 24th, are pretty rough. The ocean is giving us tiny, weak waves or just flat spells. The wind is mostly cross-off, cross-on, or onshore, and the energy is either low or non-existent. Thursday morning shows a small 3ft easterly swell with a short 8-second period and only 115 units of combined energy – it’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about. After that, it’s mostly a waiting game until the real action kicks in.
Now, the standout window starts on Wednesday, the 26th of August. That’s when things get good. Head to Galheta. On Wednesday morning, we’ve got glassy conditions with light rain and a building 4ft southeast swell, 16-second period, and a solid 711 units of combined energy. The water temp is about 67°F, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, so it’s comfortable. This is where you want to be – clean, long-period groundswell, and the wind is glassy. The afternoon pushes it even bigger: 6ft southeast swell, 14-second period, and a massive 1436 units of energy. That’s a lot of power – experienced surfers, this is your time. The wind stays light, so expect clean, lined-up waves.
Thursday the 27th keeps the run going. Morning offshore winds from the north, 5ft southeast swell, 13-second period, 659 units of energy – very good conditions. The afternoon is a bit more mixed with a stronger cross-off wind, but still surfable.
There’s a bit of a lull on Friday the 28th with smaller, weaker swell, but then Saturday the 29th morning brings another highlight: glassy conditions, 6ft east-northeasterly swell, 9-second period, and 543 units of energy. The wind is glassy, so it’ll be clean and fun for those who can handle the size.
After that, the end of the month and start of September looks pretty poor again – small, weak, and mostly onshore or cross-onshore wind. The last real standout is that Wednesday-Thursday window, so plan around that.
The long-range stuff around the 31st and into September is all poor – choppy, onshore, small swell. Not worth paddling out for.
One thing to note: when that 6ft swell hits on the 26th afternoon, it’s a solid groundswell with a long period, so it’s going to be powerful and better suited to experienced surfers. The beach might get a bit sectiony, but Galheta can handle it.
Anyway, get your gear ready for the 26th – that’s the one to circle.
Rusty.
