The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking for Galheta over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s some real quality waiting for us if we’re patient.
The first few days are a write-off. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are flat and poor, with onshore winds and no real energy. Don’t even bother paddling out. We’ve got a dry spell to kick things off, but it breaks on Monday the 24th.
Monday morning the 24th is where it all starts to turn. We’ve got a glassy, clean surface with a light offshore breeze from the SW, and a solid 4ft SSE groundswell rolling in with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 706, and it’s hitting the exposed spot perfectly from the SSE – the optimum direction. The water temp is sitting at 67°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. This is the standout of the whole window. Get on it early.
Tuesday the 25th is a bit of a letdown after that. Morning is clean but flat, and the afternoon brings a 3ft SE swell but it’s a cross-off wind and the period drops to 16 seconds, giving a weak 367 energy. It’s surfable but nothing special.
Wednesday the 26th is a big one, but it’s for experienced surfers only. We’ve got a 7ft SSE swell with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1797. The wind is light offshore from the N in the morning, so it’ll be clean, but at that size and with that much power, it’s going to be heaving. Too big for the average punter. Thursday the 27th is still chunky with a 5ft SSE swell (13-second period, 863 energy) and a clean offshore breeze in the morning. It’s a good session for the strong paddlers.
Friday the 28th offers a mixed bag. The morning is small and ordinary with a 3ft SSE swell (119 energy). But the afternoon throws a curveball: a 6ft ENE short-period swell (8 seconds, 558 energy) with a cross-off breeze and rain showers. The waves will be there, but it’s a bit messy.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th sees a drop in quality. Saturday the 29th has a 5ft ENE swell (9-second period, 468 energy) with glassy conditions in the afternoon, but the swell direction is not ideal for the spot. Sunday the 30th is a washout with onshore SSE winds and rain.
Into the next week, Monday the 31st starts poor with onshore rain, but the afternoon glass-off brings a small 4ft SSE swell (7-second period, 145 energy). Surfable, but very ordinary. Tuesday the 1st of September looks better: a 6ft ESE swell (8-second period, 477 energy) with a clean offshore NNW wind. It’s a decent session, but not the quality of the previous Monday.
The rest of the week into September 2nd and 3rd gets blown out by strong winds, with fresh breezes and poor conditions. The swell is small and choppy. Friday the 4th has a clean 4ft E swell (8-second period, 229 energy) in the morning, but the afternoon brings a big 7ft SSE swell (8-second period, 746 energy) that’s again too big for most. The long-range stuff from the 5th and 6th is small and weak, with the window fizzling out.
So, the clear winner is Monday morning the 24th. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. The rest has its moments for the bold, but that first day is the real deal.
Rusty.
