The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s coming at Galheta over the next couple of weeks.
First off, it’s a slow start. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th are both flat – barely a ripple. Not worth getting wet for.
Thursday the 20th morning finally shows something: a small 3ft swell from the east-northeast, with a light offshore breeze from the north. The combined energy is weak at 99, but it’s clean. You’ll get a few small, rideable waves. Friday the 21st morning is similar – same 3ft, slightly cross-off wind, still clean.
Then it goes dead again. From Saturday the 22nd through Tuesday the 25th, it’s flat. Glassy mornings, but no waves to speak of.
Now, Wednesday the 26th morning brings a long-period groundswell from the southeast, 15 seconds, but only about 2ft. The energy is moderate at 104. It’s clean with a light offshore from the north. That long period gives the little waves some shape and push. The afternoon picks up to about 2ft with stronger energy (217), but the wind gets up and rain moves in. Morning is the call.
Thursday the 27th is more of the same – clean and small, but the groundswell still offers some quality.
Then, the standout. Friday morning the 28th of August. Swell hits 4ft from the southeast, with a solid 13-second period. Energy jumps to 364 – moderate to strong. The wind is a gentle offshore from the north-northwest. That’s clean, lined-up surf at Galheta. The swell direction lines up well with the break’s optimum from the south-southeast. For an intermediate surfer, this is the pick of the forecast. Water temp is about average for the time of year. Expect a few others out there – crowds are possible.
After that, it goes downhill. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are onshore and choppy. Monday the 31st brings a bigger 5ft swell from the east, but cross-onshore wind makes it messy. That’s more a kite-surfing day than a clean paddle session.
Tuesday the 1st of September sees a 6ft swell from the south-southeast, but it’s short-period windswell at 6 seconds and cross-shore winds. That’s going to be lumpy and uninviting.
So, the clear winner is Friday morning the 28th. Get after it.
Rusty.
