The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Galheta’s been pretty quiet for a while – the first few days from July 19th through to the 21st are basically flat or just tiny, messy slop. Nothing worth paddling out for. Tuesday the 22nd sees a little pulse of 4ft ENE swell, but it’s short-period (8 seconds) and the wind is cross-off, so it’s rideable but nothing to write home about. Combined energy is only 156 (weak). That’s the first real surfable day, but it’s ordinary.
Then we’ve got a bit of a lull again until Thursday the 24th. The afternoon of Friday the 24th actually looks decent – 5ft SE swell, period 9 seconds, and glassy conditions. Combined energy jumps to 447 (moderate). That’s a solid session for the intermediate crew, clean and with a bit of push. The wind’s glassy, so you’ll have smooth faces.
After that, the weekend (25th and 26th) drops back to small, weak stuff. The 27th and 28th are mostly onshore or too small. The 29th to 31st are tiny once again. So there’s a real dry spell from the 22nd’s mediocre wave through to the end of the month.
But then – Saturday, August 1st morning. That morning is the standout in the whole 16-day window. The swell is 4ft from the SSE, which is exactly the direction Galheta likes (optimum SSE). Period is a very long 15 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, meaning more energy and better shape. Combined energy hits 743 (strong). And the wind is glassy, dead calm. That’s going to produce clean, lined-up waves. The only caveat: with that long period at a beach break like Galheta, the sets might run a bit close to being too straight, but if you pick your peak, you’ll get some nice walls. Crowds are possible here – it’s a popular spot, and with conditions like that, expect a few others out. But it’s the best call of the whole forecast.
The afternoon of the 1st drops off to nothing, and the 2nd and 3rd are back to tiny, poor surf. So if you’ve got a window, make August 1st your target. The rest of the run is mostly a waiting game.
