The Lowdown

Right, listen up. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming for Caldeirao.

It’s gonna be a slow start, no doubt about it. The first few days are a write-off with tiny, messy waves. You’re looking at a solid gap from now until the morning of Saturday the 15th of August before we see anything worth paddling out for. A real flat spell.

The water temp is sitting around 66° at the start, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Alright, the first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday the 15th of August. The morning session is the pick here. We’ve got a clean 4 ft swell from the ESE, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. The energy is moderate at 202, and it’s a short-period swell, around 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and fat, but it’s rideable. The crowd factor is a worry – it’s ‘sometimes’ busy, so expect a few heads out. Sunday the 16th is also decent, with a clean 4 ft swell and glassy conditions in the afternoon. The energy is still moderate (201).

The standout for the whole window, and it’s a bit further out so keep your fingers crossed, is the 26th of August. Wednesday morning, we’ve got a 5 ft swell from the ENE with a clean cross-offshore breeze. The energy is solidly moderate at 286. The afternoon gets even better: 5 ft swell from the East, still clean, with energy jumping to 345. The period is a bit short at 6 and 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit dumpy and won’t have that long, drawn-out wall, but for Caldeirao, that’s the best energy we’ve seen. This one’s a promising swell, but it’s a long way off, so don’t book the week off just yet.

For the week in between, there’s a bit of a pulse on Monday the 17th morning with 5 ft from the East (271 energy), but the wind is picking up and it’s marginal. Tuesday the 18th onwards is mostly back to small, onshore slop until the 26th rolls around.

So, keep it simple: wait for the 15th for a splash, but the real hope is on the 26th. That’s the one to watch.

Rusty.
