Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming down the pipe for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start, but don't let that fool you. The real action is shaping up for the end of the forecast period. The first few days are a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ve got a solid window of clean, fun-size waves coming our way this weekend, and then a serious pulse of energy rolling in during the second week that’s got my full attention.
Let’s start with Campeche (sandbar). This Sunday morning, the 5th of July, is actually looking pretty sweet. We’ve got a 4.6ft swell out of the SSE with an 11-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the WNW. That’s clean, lined-up waves, and the combined energy is sitting at a solid 441, so there’s a good push to the water. The crowd situation here is pretty common, so you’ll be sharing the peaks, but for a Sunday morning, it’s a decent call. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a spring suit should be fine.
Sunday afternoon hangs in there with a 4.3ft SSE swell and a clean cross-off breeze, but the real standout for the first week is the early part of the week after. By Monday morning, the 6th, the swell drops to 3.3ft, but it’s still clean with a cross-off wind. The energy is dropping though, down to 342. It’s surfable, but nothing to get too worked up about.
Tuesday, the 7th, is a write-off. The wind swings onshore and the swell is a messy 5.2ft with a short 8-second period. That’s a chop-fest. Not worth paddling out.
We then hit a lull. From Wednesday the 8th all the way through to Saturday the 11th, the surf is tiny and weak. Energy readings drop into the double digits, and the swell heights are well under 3.3ft. It’s a flat spell, so don’t bother checking the cams. There’s a gap of about 4 days with no real surf on offer.
Things start to perk up a bit on Sunday the 12th. A 3.0ft SSE swell with a 12-second period and clean offshore winds out of the NNW. The energy is back up to 249. It’s not big, but it’s clean and rideable. A good morning session for the longboard.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The real standout is the pulse arriving on Saturday the 18th. The afternoon session is the pick of the entire forecast. We’re looking at a 4.6ft SE swell with a 12-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the north. The combined energy is a massive 1045. That’s a strong, powerful swell. The wave comment says "expect very good surf conditions," and I’m not going to argue with that. This is the one to circle on the calendar. The sandbar at Campeche is going to be firing with some proper lines.
The following morning, Sunday the 19th, the swell is still a solid 3.3ft out of the SSE, but the wind goes cross-on, making it a bit of a mess. The energy is still there at 304, but the wind is going to chop it up.
Then, on Monday the 20th, we get a long-period groundswell. A 5.9ft swell out of the SE with a 16-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1613. That’s a lot of water moving. However, the wind is cross-on. At 5.9ft, this is getting into the range where it’s not ideal for beginners, and that long period means it might be a bit too straight for the sandbar, but there will be some serious power in the water. The cross-on wind is a real shame though, as it’ll keep it from being a true classic.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is the Saturday afternoon session on the 18th. Clean, 4.6ft SE swell with a big energy reading. Second best is the glassy Sunday morning on the 5th. The rest of the time is either small or blown out.
