The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ for Campeche. Gotta be honest – this is a grim outlook for paddle surfing over the next 16 days. The first real chance of anything worthwhile doesn’t show until Sunday the 23rd of August, so you’ve got a dry spell of a few days with nothing worth paddlin’ out for before that.
It starts to change a little on Saturday the 22nd though. That afternoon, the swell bumps up to 5ft from the S, but with a cross-onshore blow of 12 mph and moderate energy (362), it’s messy and choppy. Not your day.
Sunday the 23rd morning is the first actual standout of the whole run. It’s glassy – dead calm winds from the S at just 3 mph – and that’s a major positive. You’re lookin’ at clean, 4ft of groundswell from the SSE with a long 11-second period and moderate combined energy of 265. That period is long enough to give you some proper shape and a bit of push, and those glassy conditions mean it’ll be peelin’ nicely off the sandbar. This is the best session on offer, but at 4ft, it ain’t huge – great for intermediate surfers, but not gonna blow your mind. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no need for a thick suit.
Monday the 24th brings a bigger pulse. Morning sees 7ft from the SSE with a very long 13-second period and strong energy (1370). That’s proper groundswell, but here’s the catch – the wind is a light cross-onshore from the S at 6 mph, so it won’t be glassy. Also, 7ft is gettin’ up there, maybe too much for beginners. This is more of an expert window, especially with that long period tendin’ to make the waves a bit straight on a beach-sandbar setup. The afternoon drops to 6ft with similar period, but still cross-onshore.
Tuesday the 25th cleans up nicely. Both morning and afternoon have cross-offshore winds from the N at 9 mph, which will groom the faces. The morning swell is 4ft from the SSE with a 13-second period (energy of 541), and the afternoon drops to 3ft with a 12-second period (342). Clean conditions and good energy for the size – this is a solid runner-up to Sunday, especially for anyone who missed that glassy morning.
After that, it’s back to small, weak and mostly messy or clean but tiny, through to the start of September. There’s a brief window on Saturday the 29th morning where we see 4ft from the SSE and clean cross-off winds, but the period drops to just 6 seconds – short-period slop with moderate energy of 136. It’s surfable but nothin’ special, and you’d be doin’ it in a rain shower. The rest of the first week of September is all poor surf with cross-onshore winds and small swell, so don’t hold your breath.
If you’re a kite surfer, the afternoons of the 22nd and 24th with stronger wind and bigger, choppy swell might be your jam, but for paddle surfin’, it’s the 23rd morning that’s the real highlight.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the sky.
Rusty.
