The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the cards for Matadeiro over the next couple of weeks. I won't sugarcoat it – the next week or so is pretty bleak, with barely a ripple worth paddling for. We're looking at a long, quiet stretch with very little energy in the water.

Starting from now, the conditions are flat to tiny. Through Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and into next Sunday (the 9th), the swell is miniscule, the energy readings are all in the weak range (the combined energy tops out at a paltry 91), and the winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making for messy, unappealing surf. There's a brief window of glassy conditions on Wednesday morning (the 5th), but with only 2ft of weak, short-period swell, it's barely a knee-high dribble. Not worth the wetsuit wrestle.

The real story is the stand-out window that appears over a week away. Mark your calendars for the morning of Sunday the 16th of August. That's when things finally turn on. We've got a proper pulse of swell arriving, pushing 7ft from the ENE. The combined energy jumps into the strong range at 891, so there's plenty of grunt behind it. Now, the period is a modest 8 seconds, so it's a short-period windswell, not a classic groundswell, but the wave comment says to expect very good surf conditions, and with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the south, the face of the wave should be smooth.

This is expert territory though. That 7ft swell is well over 8ft for size and power, so only the experienced crew should be out there. If you're a beginner, give this a miss.

The afternoon of that same Sunday (the 16th) holds 6ft, still with clean cross-off winds and moderate energy at 818. That's a solid session for the more capable surfers.

Before that, Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th see a slight bump in size, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, which will chop it up. The morning of Saturday the 15th has a moderate energy reading of 191, but it'll be a bumpy mess with those NNW winds. Not the one.

So, the long-range call is the window on Sunday the 16th of August. It's a while away, so keep an eye on the charts, but right now, that's the only real highlight on the horizon. The rest of the fortnight is a write-off for a paddle.

Stay patient.

Rusty.
