The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Grab your board, check the wax, and let’s see what’s on offer.
Right off the bat, the next week and a half is looking pretty grim for Xa. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions with messy winds and weak, short-period windswell. The first real glimmer of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Saturday the 22nd, and even then it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The swell is small, around 4ft from the ENE, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, which cleans things up nicely. The combined energy is weak (121), so it’s not going to be a standout, but it’s a window.
The real standout, the one you want to circle on your calendar, is Sunday the 30th of August. Sunday morning at Xa, the wind drops to nothing – glassy conditions. The swell is a modest 4ft from the ENE, with a period of 7 seconds, so it’s a short-period windswell, but that glassy surface will make it smooth and fun. The combined energy is moderate (224). It’s a reef break, so it handles short-period swell better than a beach break, and the offshore wind direction is ideal for this spot. This is the best morning of the whole forecast. Keep in mind the water temperature anomaly is about average for this time of year, so it’s what you’d expect.
Then, on the first of September, Tuesday morning, we get another glassy morning. The swell picks up a bit to 6ft from the NE, still short-period (7 seconds), but with clean, calm conditions. The combined energy is moderate (414). This is a solid session for an advanced surfer, as 6ft is getting into the meaty range for a reef. It’s not too big for the experienced crew, but beginners might want to sit this one out.
Between the 17th and the 22nd, there’s a gap of about five days with no real recommendations. The conditions are either onshore, choppy, or just too weak. Saturday the 22nd is your first chance to paddle out, but it’s not a classic. The real promise is that Sunday the 30th and Tuesday the 1st.
The second week’s call is a bit more tentative, but the glassy winds on the 30th and 1st are the clear highlights. Crowds are possible at Xa, so get there early for the glassy sets.
