The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
Alright, looking at the next couple weeks, it's a bit of a tough stretch for waves at Xa (Xa). The reef break is advanced-level and very consistent, but the wind and swell combo just doesn't line up for clean surf most of the time. The water temp is sitting at 73.9°F, which is about average for this time of year.
Thursday, July 16th kicks it off, but it's pretty average. We've got a solid 5.2ft swell from the SE with a decent 10-second period and moderate wave energy (579), but the wind is cross-on from the NE at 3 mph in the morning, getting gustier by the afternoon. It's gonna be messy.
Friday, July 17th is more of the same. The swell drops a touch to 4.6ft-4.3ft from the SE, but the wind stays cross or cross-on. The ocean looks fairly choppy.
Now, the first real peek of hope comes Saturday morning, July 18th. The swell is around 4.6ft from the E, and the wind goes completely glassy. This is a major positive. The period is a short 7 seconds though, so the waves won't have that deep, grinding power, but it'll be clean and rideable. Combined wave energy is moderate (328). If you can get out early Saturday, that's your best bet in this entire first week.
After that, it's a rough go. From Saturday afternoon all the way through to the end of July, it’s mostly poor conditions. Cross and cross-on winds from the N and NE, often moderate to fresh breezes. The swell hangs around 3.9ft to 4.9ft, either from E or ENE, with short 7-8 second periods. The combined energy goes up and down, but the wind just ruins it.
Honestly, for a solid 10 days after that Saturday morning, the outlook is grim. There's no standout session in that stretch. The wind is just too strong and from the wrong direction for this exposed reef.
Things look like they might finally change late in the month. On Monday morning, July 27th, we see a 5.6ft swell from the SE with a 10-second period, and the wind goes cross-offshore from the SSW at 15 mph. The wave energy is strong (659). This is worth watching. It’s a long way out, but the setup for a clean, barreling reef break is there. But be warned, at 5.6ft for an advanced spot, this is not beginner territory.
Then, a very interesting one pops up on Wednesday morning, July 29th. The swell is a tiny 1.6ft from the SSE with a long 11-second period. The wind is dead calm, glassy. The wave energy is weak (159). This is the kind of day for a log or a longboard if you can find a corner that focuses that energy. It's a super clean, gentle option, but not a power session.
The last few days of July and into the 31st have swell coming back up from the SE, but the wind is back on it, cross to cross-on. Not great.
So, for the whole period, the pick of the bunch is Saturday morning, July 18th. The glassy conditions and 4.6ft swell offer the best chance for a clean, fun session, despite the short period. The other standout to keep an eye on is Monday morning, July 27th, promising a stronger, cleaner swell, but that's over a week away and less certain.
