The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Xa has to offer.

Straight up, the next few days are a write-off. We’re looking at a gap of about three days with nothing worth paddling out for. The wind is howling from the north and northeast, whipping up a lumpy cross-shore chop with barely a wave to show for it. You’re better off staying on the beach for that one.

The first real glimmer of hope comes Monday morning, the 24th of August. It’s tiny, only a 1ft swell from the SSE, but the wind goes glassy. Just a slight air, which will leave the surface like a mirror. The swell energy is moderate (118), but the period is a long 13 seconds, so there will be some push. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it.

Things start to wake up properly on Tuesday the 25th. We’ve got a 3ft SSE groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds. The wave energy is strong (516), and with a light cross-shore breeze from the south, it’ll have some shape to it. It’s still only marginal, but you can feel the ocean getting its act together.

Wednesday the 26th keeps building. Same long-period SSE groundswell, up to 4ft in the morning, with a light cross-shore wind. The energy jumps into the very strong range (1017). By Wednesday afternoon, it’s 5ft with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the SSW.

Now, listen. The standout of this whole outlook is Thursday morning, the 27th of August. This is the one. The swell is 5ft from the SSE with a period of 14 seconds, and the wind is glassy. Completely off. The combined swell energy is a very strong 1125. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The water temperature is 73°, which is about average for this time of year. If you’ve got the skill, this is your window. Get out early because the afternoon turns onshore and ruins it.

After that peak, the swell drops off fast Friday the 28th, and the wind comes back strong from the north and northeast through the end of August and into September 1st. It’s all cross and cross-onshore winds in the 18–22 mph range, with lumpy conditions. Not worth your time.

We get a tiny reprieve on Wednesday morning, September 2nd. The swell is 6ft from the NE, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SSW at a strong 25 mph. It’s clean, but that’s a gale. Honestly, with that much wind and a beach setup, this might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Thursday the 3rd of September shows a 6ft NE swell with a clean cross-offshore breeze at a gentle 9 mph. The energy is strong (337) and it’s clean. This is a solid, surfable morning for those willing to wait it out. Expect good conditions.

The final stretch into September 5th shows a bump in size – 8ft from the NNE on Saturday morning – but it’s crossed up by a moderate breeze. That’s big enough to be for experts only, and the chop will make it tricky.

So to sum it up: don’t bother until Monday. Keep an eye on Thursday the 27th of August – that’s the real gem. The rest is either blown out or too big and messy.

Rusty.
