Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Xa has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
The first real chance for a surf starts Saturday morning the 5th of July. We’ve got some waist-high lines rolling in from the east, around 3ft, with a clean cross-offshore wind from the south-southwest. The water’s sitting at about 75°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year – nothing weird going on there. The combined energy is moderate at 232. It’s not a massive day, but it’s rideable and won’t be a total washout.
Sunday morning the 6th of July sees a similar vibe, with 3ft of swell from the south-southeast, but the period jumps to 11 seconds. That extra length in the period gives the waves a bit more shape and push, with the energy sitting at 281. Again, the cross-off wind is your friend here, making for a clean session.
Now, Monday morning the 7th of July is where we start to see a real uptick. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the south-southeast, with a solid 11-second period. The combined wave energy is strong at 567. That’s a lot of water moving around for a spot this size. The wind is a cross-shore from the north, which keeps it semi-clean but not perfect. This is the first day where the size is pushing into that intermediate/expert zone, so beginners might want to sit this one out.
The standout window really opens up on Saturday morning the 11th of July. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the southeast, with a 12-second period pushing through. The north-northwest cross-off wind is light, at just 6 mph, keeping the surface glassy. The combined wave energy is 459 – that’s strong, consistent power. This is the pick of the first week for a solid surfer.
If you can hold out, Sunday morning the 12th of July is proper special. The wind goes glassy – zero mph from the west – and the waves are a clean 4ft from the east-southeast, with that same 12-second period (energy 428). A glassy morning at a reef break with that kind of wind and swell direction? That’s as good as it gets. The waves will be peeling down the reef with nobody messing them up.
Further out, on Friday morning the 17th of July, we see the biggest single swell of the run. A 6ft pulse from the south-southeast, but with a short, choppy 6-second period. The wind is glassy in the morning (3 mph from the west), so the surface will be perfect. But that short period means the waves will be a bit fat and crumbly, more of a mush-burger than a clean barrel. Energy is moderate though, at 280. It’s a big, mushy day – okay for a cruise, but not the standout.
The real late-blooming hero is Sunday morning the 19th of July. We get a 4ft swell from the south-southeast, but with a very long 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is strong at 555. The wind is a clean cross-off from the south-southwest at 9 mph. For a reef like Xa, that long period is a dream – the waves will have serious push and shape, with nice long gaps between sets. That is the absolute best session on offer in this whole outlook, though it’s over a week away, so keep an eye on it.
The only real bummer is a total flat period from around the 13th to the 16th of July, with nothing worth paddling out for until that Friday the 17th morning bump. For the most part though, Xa is showing a lot of consistent, clean, rideable surf. It doesn’t look like it’s going to stay quiet for long.
Keep your eyes peeled and your wax on.
Rusty.
