The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The forecast is for Xa, a solid reef break that holds a lot of potential, but we’re playing a waiting game for the really good stuff.
Right now, Friday morning the 17th, we’ve got a bit of a tease. The swell is a clean 5ft from the ESE with a solid 11-second period, and the wind is absolutely glassy, coming light from the NNW. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on. The energy is pumping at 557 (moderate wave energy), and the waves are expected to be very good. This is the best bet for the next little while. The wind is offshore from the W, which is what Xa loves, so this morning is a real standout. Crowds are possible, so you might get a bit of company.
From Friday afternoon, things get messy. The wind swings onshore, and the quality drops right off. Saturday the 18th through to the end of the following week, we’re stuck in a pattern of poor to marginal conditions. The wind is either cross or cross-onshore, often strong, and the swell is a mix of short-period E/ENE windswell, mostly under 5ft. The energy is weak to moderate (values between 174 and 461). It’s going to be a rough run of lumpy, choppy, and pretty horrible surf. Not worth paddling out for.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. After a week of nothing, we get a proper pulse. On Sunday the 26th, the morning looks incredible. The swell jumps to 5ft, but from the SSE, with a very long 14-second period. The energy is strong at 865 (moderate wave energy). The wind is calm, glassy, dead calm. The water temp is still about average. This is the real standout of the whole outlook. The waves will be clean, powerful, and with that long period, the reef at Xa will be working its magic. The offshore direction is optimum from the E, and this SSE swell is a good match. The afternoon gets tricky with an onshore breeze, so get in early.
Monday the 27th morning is another cracker. Still 5ft from the SSE, period drops slightly to 12 seconds, but it’s still a long-period groundswell. The energy is still strong at 648. Glassy conditions again with a light NNW wind. This is another top-tier window. The afternoons, as usual, get ruined by the wind through the rest of the forecast.
The very end of the window, around August 1st, shows a big swell building – 6ft from the SSE with a 15-second period and massive energy at 2208 (strong wave energy). The problem is the wind is cross-shore and moderate, making it a marginal call. If the wind cleans up, this could be a monster day for advanced surfers only, but it’s too far out to be certain.
For beginners, the best bet is the glassy mornings around the 26th and 27th where the swell is under 5ft. For the crew who can handle it, the 26th morning is the one to circle. The 17th morning is also a great little session.
