The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, checking in from the beach. Let’s get into it.

The next couple of weeks have a bit of a slow start, but there’s some hope building for the second week. The first true window of quality surf looks like it might be a little while off, so don’t get your hopes up for the first few days.

Things are looking pretty ordinary to kick things off. Tuesday the 4th is a complete write-off with poor conditions and a weak, short-period easterly swell. The wind is howling, so don’t even bother. Wednesday and Thursday morning offer a little bump in size, but the period is short and the quality is marginal. The water temp is sitting at 73°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The first real ray of light comes on Friday the 7th. The morning has a clean 5ft easterly swell with a moderate offshore wind, and by the afternoon, the wind drops further, the swell bumps up a touch to 5ft, and the conditions are looking good. This is a solid, clean window for Praia de Tucuns. The swell is manageable for intermediates, and the offshore wind is going to make for some nice lines. The combined energy is moderate (272), so there’s some push but nothing too intense.

Saturday the 8th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning is small and clean, but the afternoon shows a better shape with a light breeze. The combined energy jumps up to 388, which is a decent sign, but the period is still short. It’s surfable, but not the standout.

Sunday the 9th morning is the best bet of the first week. The swell is 5ft from the ENE, the wind is light offshore, and the combined energy is the highest we’ve seen so far at 491 (moderate). The water is clean, the waves will have some punch, and the crowds at Praia de Tucuns can be a thing sometimes, so get in early. The afternoon turns into an onshore mess, so that morning window is the one.

After Sunday, the forecast takes a turn. Monday and Tuesday the 10th and 11th are dominated by a long-period southerly swell, but the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, making it choppy and messy. The energy is high (over 800), but the quality is poor. The swell direction is coming from the south, which is not the optimum for this spot, so it’s going to be a waste of a good swell.

The middle of the week, Wednesday the 12th, sees a solid 7ft southerly swell rolling in, but again, the wind is all wrong. The combined energy is strong (1143), but it’s a cross-onshore mess. This is really more of a kiteboarding setup than a surfable one. Too big and messy for a good paddle session.

Then we get a gap. Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th are marginal, with clean-looking wind but a drop in size and a long-period swell that might be a bit too straight for the beach break here. The best window in the second week is shaping up for Saturday the 15th. The morning has a fresh offshore wind and a 5ft southerly swell, but the real standout is Sunday the 16th of August. The morning is glassy. Absolutely glassy. No wind. The swell is 5ft from the south, with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 754 (strong). This is going to be the cleanest, most lined-up surf of the whole forecast. The period is long enough to carry some real power, and the glassy conditions will make it a dream. This is the one to circle on your calendar. The afternoon turns onshore, but that morning session is going to be worth the wait.

After that, Monday the 17th has another glassy morning, but the swell drops to 3ft. It’s clean and fun for a longboard or a fish, but not the highlight. The rest of the week fades out into small, weak, and poor conditions, with the last few days barely showing any energy at all.

So, the pick of the forecast is Sunday morning, the 16th of August at Praia de Tucuns. Glassy, clean, and a solid 5ft of long-period south swell. Get it while it’s good.

Rusty.
