The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Geriba is cooking up for us over the next couple of weeks.
We are starting off a bit slow. The next few days are a write-off with small, onshore slop. Saturday the 22nd has a bit of swell but the wind is straight onshore and the surf is just poor. We need to wait until Sunday the 23rd for things to get going.
Sunday morning looks like the real start of the window. We’ve got a clean 4ft SSW swell rolling in with a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the ENE. The wave energy is moderate at 361, making it a nice, user-friendly size for the beginners that Geriba is known for. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so it won’t feel any different than usual.
Monday the 24th builds up, but with a cross-on wind and some rain, the surf will be a bit choppy and messy. The swell jumps to 7ft on Monday morning and hits 8ft in the afternoon from the south, with a nice 14-second period. That energy is strong, hitting 2487 in the afternoon, but the wind is just not cooperating for a clean session.
Now, here is where it gets good. Tuesday the 25th morning is a standout. The swell is still solid at 8ft from the south, but the period stretches to a very long 15 seconds. This is a proper groundswell. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the east, leaving the waves clean. The energy is very strong at 2445, so this is for experienced surfers only. That combo of size, clean conditions, and that long-period power is going to produce some serious lines.
Wednesday the 26th keeps the good run going with more solid 8-8ft south swell and a very long 16-second period. The wind is still cross-offshore, keeping it clean, but the energy is massive at 4431. This is expert territory. The crowd will be on it because it’s Geriba, so expect a busy lineup.
Thursday the 27th morning is another beauty. The swell drops a touch to 7ft from the south, but we get proper offshore wind from the NE at 25 km/h. That is the kind of wind that will groom the face to perfection. The energy is still strong at 1804, and it’s clean as a whistle. This is prime, top-tier surf for experienced crew.
After Thursday afternoon, the energy starts to fade quickly. Friday the 28th is smaller, in the 3-4ft range, and the rest of the week into September drops right off. From the 29th of August through to the 3rd of September, we are looking at tiny, weak surf with poor conditions. The energy drops to just 10 on some days.
There is a small pulse of windswell on the 2nd of September, but it’s coming from the SW with a short, weak 5-second period. Not worth paddling out for.
Then, a bit of hope for the second week. Thursday the 3rd of September afternoon sees a spike of 6ft from the SSW with that very long 16-second period. The energy jumps to 1758, but the wind is onshore from the SSW again, making it messy. It’s a promising long-range signal, but the wind needs to change. The following Friday morning, the 4th, has 6ft from the SSW, but the wind is cross-shore and choppy.
So, to sum it up: If you are an experienced surfer, the window from Tuesday the 25th to Thursday the 27th is your golden ticket. Tuesday morning and Thursday morning are the absolute best of the bunch. For the beginners, Sunday the 23rd morning is your moment. After that, it’s a quiet spell until the second week, where we keep an eye on that Thursday the 3rd afternoon pulse.
Rusty.
