The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Geriba.
The short version? We got a long stretch of nothing to start, and then one week from next Sunday it looks like the ocean finally wakes up. You’re gonna need patience, but there’s a couple of windows that look worth circling on the calendar.
Right off the bat, for the first few days, it’s flat out junk. We’re talking ankle-slashers with barely any push, and wind whipping around. Not worth getting wet. From the 18th through the 21st, it’s tiny – under 2 ft – and about as exciting as watching grass grow. The wind is clean offshore, but there’s just no swell to work with. You’d be paddling for nothing.
Then we hit a bit of a weird patch on the 22nd. The swell bumps up to around 3 ft, but the wind goes onshore and messes it all up. Poor conditions, rough and bumpy. Not your friend.
Things start to change on the 23rd. The swell picks up and the energy in the water jumps way up, with combined energy readings around 421 to 485. It's still not clean, with a light cross-onshore and then cross-shore wind, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy. The period is short, only 7-8 seconds, so it’s lacking power. It’s a step up, but still marginal. This continues into the 24th, with the swell building to around 5 ft from the S. The energy is getting strong (711-773), but the wind is cross-shore and there’s a bit of chop. It’s more interesting, but not quite the good stuff yet.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The real standout is shaping up for Tuesday the 25th. We get a solid boost of swell, hitting 8 ft in the morning from the S, with a very long 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell, and the energy levels are through the roof at 2338. That’s strong, powerful surf. The wind is cross-offshore, so it’s going to be cleaner than the days before. This size is pushing into expert territory for sure; it’s not a day for beginners. This is the biggest, most powerful swell of the window.
Following that, Wednesday the 26th looks like the pick of the bunch for quality. The swell drops to a more manageable 6 ft in the morning from the S, with a long 13-second period. It’s still got plenty of energy (928). The wind goes light offshore from the N, and that’s a recipe for some clean, lined-up waves. The afternoon glassses off even more with a gentle offshore and an excellent 16-second period swell from the SSE. If you’re an experienced surfer, that Wednesday arvo session has got your name written all over it.
After that, the swell slowly backs off. Thursday the 27th still has some decent, clean waves in the morning, around 4 ft from the S with a good period, but the wind turns cross-onshore in the afternoon and kills it. Friday the 28th and the weekend drop even more, back down to the 2-2 ft range, and the clean offshore wind returns but there’s no size again.
The following week looks pretty grim again, just small and messy with onshore winds. Nothing worth jumping on.
So, to sum it up: the time to act is the 25th through the 27th. The 25th is for the big-wave crew, charging on a powerful S swell. The 26th is the one the rest of us are looking at, especially the afternoon, for the best combination of size, clean winds, and long-period swell. It’s a great forecast for that Tuesday, but keep in mind it's a full week away, so things can shift. As always, at Geriba, it’s a consistent spot, so when the swell shows, it usually doesn’t stay flat for long.
This is Rusty, signing off.
