The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking for Geriba.
The next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag. We’ve got a slow start, with next to nothing for the first week. The real action is all tucked away in the second week. There’s a good window of solid, clean swell coming through around the 25th, but you’ll have to be patient.
The first decent whisper of surf doesn’t show up until the morning of Monday the 17th, but even then it’s a pretty marginal 3ft south swell. The wind is offshore, which is nice, but the energy is weak (247) and the conditions are just okay. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing to worry about there.
After that, the surf drops right off. From Tuesday the 18th all the way through to Saturday the 22nd, we’re looking at a long dry spell of tiny, weak waves – mostly under 2ft. It’s basically a flat spell. The wind is mostly offshore or cross-offshore, but there’s just no swell to work with. You’d be better off checking the tide pools.
Things start to stir on Sunday the 23rd. The afternoon shows a 2ft south swell with a period of 13 seconds, giving it a bit of punch and a combined energy of 328. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze, so the surf is clean. It’s not a standout, but it’s a sign that the ocean is waking up.
Now, the one to circle on your calendar is Tuesday the 25th of August. The afternoon brings a solid 6ft south swell with a long 12-second period, and the energy is pumping at 1019. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the ENE, so the conditions are clean. This is the best of the lot – a proper groundswell that will have plenty of power. It’s a bit much for a beginner, though. For the experienced crew, this is the session. The morning of the 25th is also worth a look, with a 7ft swell, but it’s a bit more wind-affected.
The rest of the week after that backs off a bit. The 26th and 27th see smaller, wind-affected surf, and by the 28th we’re back to small, clean but weak waves. The very end of the month and into September looks pretty ordinary, with onshore winds and lumpy conditions.
So, bottom line: the first week is a write-off. The standout is Tuesday the 25th of August afternoon. It’s the one with the best combination of size, clean conditions, and solid energy. Don’t sleep on it.
Rusty.
