The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Pepino’s serving up in feet and miles per hour.

The first few days are pretty flat and weak, a real slow start. There’s a noticeable gap in any decent surf early on, but it starts to build towards the end of the first week.

Tuesday the 4th is a waste. A tiny 1ft SSE swell with a cross-off wind, but it’s just too small. Wednesday morning the 5th is slightly better, with 3ft from the south, 12 second period, and a light cross-off breeze keeping it clean. It’s small but rideable. The energy is moderate (250).

Thursday morning the 6th drops to 2ft from the south with clean offshore wind, but it’s weak (99). Thursday afternoon sees 3ft from the east but with a short, weak 7 second period, so it’s pretty gutless. Friday the 7th morning is offshore but only 2ft ESE, weak energy (89). Saturday morning the 8th has glassy conditions with 3ft east swell, but it’s not doing much.

Now, here’s the standout. Sunday morning the 9th. This is the one. We’ve got 5ft of south swell, a solid 14 second period, energy jumping to 945, and clean conditions with a light offshore from the NNW. That’s proper groundswell, and with Pepino exposed to the south, this is the real deal. The size is solid for intermediates but not too big, and that long period will groom it nicely. The offshore wind will make it clean. This is the best window of the whole outlook.

After that, the afternoon gets chopped up by a cross-onshore, so get on it early. Monday the 10th is messy, Tuesday the 11th is cross-shore and marginal. The rest of the week sees a few mornings with clean conditions and 3 to 5ft south swell, like Thursday the 13th morning and Friday the 14th morning, but nothing matches that Sunday peak.

The 14th afternoon has a 5ft, 15 second south swell with energy at 985, but it’s cross-shore and a little bumpy. That’s a lot of energy and a very long period, so at a point or reef it could be fun, but at a beach break it might be too straight.

The 16th morning has a clean 3ft SSE with offshore wind, a decent option.

After that, it fades out. The 17th and 18th look poor with onshore wind and weak, short-period junk.

So, if you’ve got one session to chase, make it Sunday morning the 9th. That’s the highlight. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

Rusty.
