The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up at Cibratel.
Honestly, the next few days are pretty flat and ugly. There’s nothing worth paddling out for through Thursday the 20th or Friday the 21st. The swell is tiny and the winds are all over the shop. You’re looking at a few days of weak, messy surf.
Things start to get interesting from Saturday the 22nd. We’ve got a bit of a pulse arriving – chest-high SSE swell around 4ft, period around 10 seconds. Combined energy is moderate (282). Winds are light onshore though, so don’t expect perfection. It’s a marginal call, but at least there’s something to push a log around.
Sunday the 23rd is similar but dropping off, with waist-high SSE swell, period still around 10 seconds, energy weakening (185). Monday the 24th is where we see a real kick. A long-period SSE groundswell arrives, 14 seconds, building to 4ft in the morning and 5ft in the afternoon. Combined energy jumps to 677 in the morning and 1543 in the afternoon – that’s strong wave energy. Winds are light onshore, so the surface won’t be perfect, but there’s some serious juice coming in. Best for experienced surfers with a longer board.
Tuesday the 25th is the standout of the whole outlook. Morning still has some cross-onshore wind with long-period SSE groundswell (14 seconds, 4ft, energy 659), but Tuesday afternoon is where it all clicks. That same long-period SSE groundswell (4ft, 14 seconds, energy 520) gets clean cross-offshore wind from the west. Combined with the glassy conditions, this is the moment. Expect very good surf – clean, rippable, with proper lines. Crowds are often an issue here, so you’ll want to be early.
Wednesday the 26th morning goes glassy with calm wind, 3ft SSE swell at 13 seconds (energy 494). Nice and clean but definitely smaller. Wednesday afternoon picks up again with a longer 16-second SSE groundswell (4ft, energy 1079) but onshore wind makes it a bit ragged.
Thursday the 27th morning is another cracker: glassy, clean, easterly light wind, 3ft SSE swell at 14 seconds (energy 701). Expect very good surf. This is your backup if you miss Tuesday afternoon.
From there it fades into smaller, shorter-period ESE swell for the rest of the month. Friday the 28th has a glassy morning with 3ft ESE swell at 9 seconds (energy 245) – clean but weak. The weekend (29th-30th) is tiny, only knee to waist high, with clean but very ordinary conditions.
Then we hit a real dead zone from August 31st right through to September 4th. The wind gets messy, and the surf is mostly junk. There’s a spike on September 3rd morning with 8ft S swell at 10 seconds (energy 1462) – that’s solid, but onshore wind and rain will make it a washing machine. Expert only, and not recommended.
Finally, September 4th afternoon offers a glimmer: light cross-offshore wind, 4ft SSE swell at 12 seconds (energy 512) and the “expect very good surf” label. That’s promising, but it’s far out, so keep an eye on it.
Water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Feels nice on the skin.
If you only have one session to hunt, make it Tuesday 25th afternoon at Cibratel. That’s the best on offer – clean, long-period groundswell, cross-offshore wind. Next best is Thursday 27th morning.
Otherwise, it’s mostly a waiting game.
