The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – the numbers aren't screaming, but there’s a couple of windows that’ll get the heart going if you pick the right moment.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at small, weak surf. The energy in the water is low, with the combined swell energy reading just 194 early on Monday the 17th. That swell is tickling the shore at 4 ft from the ESE, but the period is short at 8 seconds. The saving grace is the wind: it’s glassy, near-calm out of the SW at 3 mph, so the water will be clean. The water temp is sitting at 69°F, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s just about surfable, but nothing to rush for.
Tuesday the 18th is a repeat – a morning glass-off with 3 ft from the ESE, same short 8-second period, and the energy drops to 117. It’s very ordinary, but you could have a slow peel if you’re desperate.
Then we hit a lull. From Wednesday the 19th through the end of that week, the swell drops right out. Heights tumble to 2 ft and lower, energy readings sink to the 20s or 30s, and we get some scratchy cross-onshore winds. The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd brings a little bump back up to around 3 ft with a slightly longer 9-10 second period from the SSE, but the combined energy stays modest at 178 to 205. Winds are okay, not great. It’s marginal.
Now, on Monday the 24th of August, things start to get interesting. The swell direction swings to the S and the period jumps to 12 seconds with a combined energy of 314 in the morning and blowing up to 1391 in the afternoon. That afternoon sees 6 ft of S swell, but the wind turns cross-onshore from the SSE at 6 mph. That combo makes for a rough, choppy surface. The size is there, but the quality is questionable unless you’re really hungry.
The real standout is Monday the 31st of August. The morning session has 3 ft of SSE swell with a cracking 16-second period and combined energy of 592. The wind is glassy out of the S at 3 mph. That’s going to be clean, lined-up, and smooth. That long period will work a treat here – it’ll focus the energy into proper, pushy waves. But remember, long-period swells at a beach break can sometimes make them too straight, so you’ll want to pick your peak wisely.
One to circle on the calendar is Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning shows 7 ft of SSE swell with a period of 13 seconds, and the combined energy rockets up to 2353. That’s serious, strong wave energy. The wind is light out of the WSW at 6 mph, giving us a clean, cross-off breeze. This is on the bigger side – over 6 ft, so this is aimed squarely at the experienced surfers. The sets will have muscle, and with good wind, the face should hold up. The afternoon sees the wind shift, so get on it early. That’s your best bet in the whole outlook.
The rest of the period is a mixed bag of small days with glassy pockets but not enough oomph. There’s a lot of “ordinary” in there, but that one Monday and Tuesday at the end are worth holding out for.
Rusty.
