The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Cibratel over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week is a bit of a struggle. We've got waves, but they're small and the conditions are just ordinary. The water's sitting at 66°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real chance to get wet that's worth talking about is Sunday the 19th. The morning is tiny, just 2ft from the ESE, but the afternoon shows a bit of life. The swell picks up to 4ft from the east with a short 8-second period. The combined energy is moderate (224), and with a light cross-off breeze, it's clean. It's not a world-beater, but it's a solid little session for a beginner-plus wave.
Monday the 20th afternoon is interesting. The swell drops back to 2ft from the ESE, but the wind goes glassy. That's a major positive – clean, smooth conditions. The energy is weak (57), so it's a small wave day, but for a longboard or a funboard, it'll be a treat with no wind.
The middle of the week turns ugly. From Tuesday the 21st right through to the end of the month, it's mostly poor surf with onshore winds and rain. There's a few glassy mornings, like Sunday the 26th, where we get a 2ft, 12-second groundswell from the south (energy 145), but it's weak and the wind switches onshore by the afternoon. Not worth getting excited about.
Now, the standout. If you can wait, mark your calendar for Thursday the 30th of July and Friday the 31st. Thursday afternoon sees a jump to 5ft from the SSE with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is strong (382). The wind is glassy. That's a clean, punchy wave. But Friday the 31st morning is the real gem. The swell is 4ft from the SSE, the period stretches to 12 seconds, and the energy is very strong (514). The wind is dead flat, glassy. This is a long-period groundswell, so it'll have good shape and power, but it might fatten up a bit at the beach break. Still, for Cibratel, this is the best session on offer – clean, decent size, and plenty of energy.
The first weekend of August is a bit of a mixed bag. Saturday the 1st morning has a 5ft E swell, but it's a short 7-second period with a cross-shore wind, so it'll be choppy. The afternoon cleans up with glassy conditions and a 2ft, 11-second SSE swell (energy 240), which is a nice little glassy wrap-up to the week.
So, overall, the first week is a write-off for anything quality. There's a few small, clean windows, but the real action is a week and a half away. Friday the 31st of July morning is the clear standout – the best combination of size, period, and glassy conditions. If you're keen, that's your session.
Rusty.
