The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for our local stretch.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is flat-out grim. We’re looking at a massive gap with no real surf to get excited about. From now through to the end of July, the swell is tiny and the energy is weak, generally under 100 on the energy scale. You’ll see waves that are knee-high at best, with poor conditions. The wind is often offshore, which would be a dream if there was any swell to work with, but there just isn’t. It’s a classic case of clean but tiny. You’ll be paddling around with nothing to ride.

The best chance for a surf comes in the second week of the forecast, but even then it’s not a slam dunk. Let’s look at the standout.

Ilha Porchat – this is your best bet, and it’s not until the morning of Monday, 28 July. The swell is still small at 3 ft, but it’s coming from the S with a period of 13 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and it packs a punch with a combined energy of 351 (moderate to strong). The wind is glassy calm, dead calm, which means the waves will be clean and smooth. This is a sheltered spot, so it’ll handle that S swell nicely. It’s a beach and point setup, so that long period will be more forgiving on the point section. The water temp is 67°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no shock there. Keep in mind, this break can get crowded, so expect company. The swell is small enough for beginners, but the long period means the sets will be a bit more powerful and spaced out, making it tricky for total novices. The morning of the 28th is the only real window of quality.

The rest of the second week is a mixed bag. The Thursday morning, 30 July, has some clean 3 ft S swell, but that’s with a short period and modest energy. The following Monday, 3 August, has a similar 3 ft ESE swell that’s clean, but again, it’s just ordinary. Nothing that’ll get your heart racing.

So, to sum it up: we’ve got a long dry spell, then a brief, promising window on the morning of July 28th at Ilha Porchat. If you can get out that morning, it’s your best (and only) real shot. Don’t hold your breath for the rest. Stay tuned, forecasts can change.

Rusty.
