The Lowdown

Alright surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Ilha Porchat over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: this is a tough stretch. The water is sitting at a warm 71°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but the quality of the surf just isn't cooperating for the most part. We’ve got a long, dry spell of poor conditions ahead before we see anything even close to worthwhile.

The first real chance to get wet without completely hating life looks like Thursday morning, September 3rd. The wind will be glassy and the swell is a clean 4 ft from the SSE with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and for a sheltered point like Ilha Porchat, that long period can wrap in nicely. The energy is moderate, sitting at 360. It’s not going to be world-class, but it’s surfable. The afternoon will see the wind shift cross-shore and mess things up, so you’ll want to be on it early.

After that, we slip back into the doldrums. Friday morning, September 4th is glassy again, but the swell drops right off to just 3 ft. You could probably get a few little ones on a log, but it’s ordinary.

Then we hit a nasty run. From Saturday the 5th all the way through to Tuesday the 8th, we’ve got persistent cross-onshore winds and rain. The swell does bump up a bit, hitting 5 ft on Monday the 7th with a big energy reading of 481, but it’s all wind-chop. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one.

There’s a brief moment of calm on Wednesday afternoon, September 9th. The wind goes glassy again, but the swell is a weak 3 ft from the ESE with a short period of 7 seconds. The energy is low at 144. It’s a tease.

The next proper chance comes on Thursday morning, September 10th. It’s glassy again, with a 3 ft ESE swell. The energy is a bit better at 180, and those conditions are clean. It’s still just ordinary, but it’s the best we’ve got in this window. Later that afternoon the swell jumps to 5 ft with a huge energy of 529, but the wind comes onshore and ruins it.

After that, it’s more of the same: onshore winds, rain, and poor surf. We get a brief moment of glassy conditions on Sunday morning, September 13th, but the swell is barely 1 ft, even if the period is a very long 15 seconds. That’s a tease if I’ve ever had one.

The final kicker comes on Thursday, September 17th. The swell is a modest 4 ft, but the period is a massive 16 seconds from the SSE, and the energy is strong at 699. The problem? The wind is a moderate cross-onshore at 12 to 15 mph and it’s raining. It’s going to be a bumpy, messy mess. That’s another one that would be a dream on a glassy day, but as it stands, it’s a write-off.

The Standout: Honestly, if you had to pick one, it’s Thursday morning, September 3rd. That glassy wind with a solid 4 ft SSE groundswell is the cleanest wave we’re going to see. It’s not pumping, but it’s the only time the stars align for a proper paddle.

So what’s the bottom line? This is a quiet period for Ilha Porchat. Don’t expect much. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, because things can change, but for now, you’re better off waxing the longboard and waiting for a better day.

Stay frothy,
Rusty
