The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Looking at the 16-day window for Praia do Felix, the first week is pretty quiet, but hold onto your board – there's a proper pulse of swell coming through early in the second week that’s the real standout.

The opening days are on the small side. Saturday the 1st has knee-high, 2ft southerly swell with a solid 12-second period, but it's the morning that's the go with glassy conditions. The combined energy is a moderate 243, so there's a bit of push. Water temp is about average for this time of year. Sunday morning the 2nd picks up a touch to 3ft, but it's a short-period easterly windswell at 7 seconds, so it'll be a bit lumpy and weak – combined energy down to 126. The glassy wind is a plus though. Monday and Tuesday mornings stay small, around 3ft, with glassy conditions again, but the energy is low (95-176). The real takeaway for this first week is that it's small but clean on the mornings.

Then we get to the big window. Saturday the 8th morning is the first sign of life, with 5ft SSE swell and a 9-second period, combined energy jumping to 361 – that's moderate to strong. And it's glassy. That's a fun, clean wave. But the standout is Sunday the 9th. The morning brings 5ft southerly groundswell with a very long 14-second period, combined energy a strong 1068, and clean cross-offshore winds. The afternoon is even better: 6ft SSE swell, 15-second period, combined energy a meaty 1508, and clean cross-offshore wind. This is excellent, powerful surf – but at 6ft, it's pushing into the size that's better for experienced surfers. The long period from the SSE is a classic groundswell that will wrap in nicely here. Monday the 10th morning is also a cracker, with 7ft SSE swell, 15-second period, and glassy conditions – combined energy of 1641. That's a serious, powerful swell, and with that size, it's for experts only. A bit of rain around but the wind is perfect.

After that pulse, the swell drops. Tuesday the 11th gets messy with onshore wind, and from Wednesday the 12th onward it fades back to small, ordinary conditions with periods of poor wind. The gap between the main pulse and the end of the forecast is quiet, with nothing worth paddling out for.

So, the best on offer is clearly Sunday the 9th and Monday the 10th. Sunday afternoon with the 6ft SSE swell, 15-second period, and clean cross-offshore wind is the pick of the bunch – powerful, well-shaped, and you'll have the place to yourself as it's a beginner-friendly spot but that size keeps the crowd down. Monday morning is right up there too, but it’s a proper 7ft, so only for the experienced crew. The crowd at Praia do Felix is only sometimes an issue, but on a good day like that, you'll want to be early.

Rusty signing off.
