The Lowdown

Right, so let’s have a look at what’s happening.

First off, it’s been a pretty quiet stretch at Massaguacu. A lot of days with tiny swell and poor conditions, so the early part of the outlook is a bit of a write-off. From Thursday the 13th through Saturday the 15th, it’s flat or junk. The water is sitting at a very warm 72°, which is much warmer than what’s normal for this time of year – you’ll feel it.

The first real chance to paddle out comes on the Sunday morning the 16th with a bit of 5ft swell out of the ESE, clean and glassy with very light ENE winds. It’s not amazing, but it’s surfable. The swell energy is still only moderate at 236.

Monday the 17th is the real standout of the whole 16-day window. The morning looks absolute magic – 8ft of E swell, period 9 seconds, and no wind at all. The combined energy reading is a solid 1073, so there’s decent power in the water. That’s expert-level surf with that height – not for beginners. The glassy calm winds will make it clean as a whistle. If you’re a strong surfer, be on it early at Massaguacu. The afternoon drops off fast though, so don’t sleep in.

From Tuesday the 18th through the following week, it’s mostly ordinary. You get some little windows of clean, small waves – like the Thursday the 20th with 5ft sets and glassy NE winds, and Friday the 21st morning with clean 3ft waves. But nothing else really fires up. The spot is a bit inconsistent anyway, so a few days of flat or weak surf isn’t a huge shock here.

Moving further out, the Wednesday the 26th has a pulse of 5ft SE swell early, glassy, but the energy is moderate at 250 and the risk of storms is there. It’s surfable but not a standout. Then the very end of the outlook, Friday morning the 28th, shows 5ft ESE swell in glassy conditions and calm winds – that’s a promising, clean option for the second week, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it.

The overall pick is definitely Monday the 17th morning. Get in early.

Rusty.
