The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Vermelha do Centro over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first few days are offering up surfable waves, but they’re pretty ordinary – think small, weak swells with so-so energy. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The pick of the early period is probably Sunday, July 19th morning. We’ve got clean, glassy conditions with a light 4ft swell rolling in from the ESE. The wind is dead calm from the NNW, making it look real clean. It’s a consistent break for beginners, so it’s a good time to get a few easy ones. The combined energy is moderate (189), so it’s not going to be pumping, but it’s a fun little wave.
Monday, July 20th morning looks similar – glassy, 4ft from the E, with that same clean feel. The afternoons get a bit sloppy with cross-onshore winds, so mornings are definitely the call. This pattern of small, clean morning surf holds through Wednesday, July 22nd, with swell hanging around 3ft to 4ft.
We hit a real lull Thursday, July 23rd afternoon through to Friday, July 24th morning, where the swell drops to 2ft or 2ft with minimal energy. It gets a bit better again Friday afternoon and into Saturday, July 25th morning, with 3ft to 3ft glassy conditions, but still nothing to write home about.
Then around Sunday, July 26th afternoon, things get interesting. The swell turns more southerly, with a period jumping to 13 seconds, and the combined energy hits 211 – a moderate bump. The wind is glassy, and the water is calm. It’s still small at 2ft, but the quality is there. Tuesday, July 28th morning has a similar feel with 2ft and a 13-second period, glassy, clean. These are your best early bets for a longer, more drawn-out wave.
The real standout, though, is the first week of August. On Saturday, August 1st morning, we see a jump in energy to 379 with a 3ft south swell at 12 seconds, and it’s flat calm with glassy conditions. That’s a solid, clean day. But the absolute best is Sunday, August 2nd morning. The swell picks up to 5ft out of the SSE, with a very long 16-second period and a massive combined energy of 1295. That’s a powerful, clean groundswell. The wind is glassy. This is for experienced surfers – at 5ft, it’s getting too big for beginners. The long period means it’ll break clean and offer plenty of power, but it might be a bit straight for the beach break, so keep an eye on the tides. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
Monday, August 3rd morning still has a good 4ft swell with a 14-second period from the SSE, and it’s glassy with calm winds. A solid follow-up.
So, overall: a slow start with small, clean waves in the mornings, a mid-window lull, then a couple of promising glassy days toward the end of July, and a real cracking weekend to kick off August. The Sunday, August 2nd morning is the standout – that’s the one you wait for.
Rusty.
