Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it. We've got a bit of a slow start, but there's some real promise on the horizon at Praia Tenório. The pattern is a quiet opener, then a bit of a pulse of swell kicks in, and the back half of the period has some standouts that are worth circling on the calendar. The water is sitting at 71.6°F and that's about 1.4°F warmer than normal, so it's a touch toastier than average for this time of year, which is always nice.
First up, on Thursday afternoon the 2nd of July, there's barely a ripple. We're looking at a small 1.6ft south swell with a period of just 10 seconds and the combined energy is a weak 68. The wind is glassy though, so it's clean, but honestly, you'd be hard-pressed to get wet. Friday is a complete write-off with tiny 0.7ft and 1.0ft waves and onshore winds. Don't bother.
The first real sign of life comes on Saturday morning the 4th of July. The swell bumps up to 3.9ft from the south, period at 10 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to a moderate 398. The wind is glassy, which is the major positive here – that'll keep the faces clean. The score tells me this is a decent shout for a beginner-plus wave. Get on it early because the afternoon turns to onshore junk.
Sunday the 5th is a bit of a mixed bag. The swell holds at 4.9ft from the south with a period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy is strong at 636, but the wind is onshore. The forecast calls it marginal, and I agree – the texture won't be great, but there's some push there.
Monday morning the 6th of July cleans up nicely. The swell drops back to 3.9ft, still from the south, period 10 seconds, combined energy moderate at 388. Light offshore wind from the ENE makes for clean surf. This is a solid, fun little window. Afternoon gets a bit cross and choppier, so the morning is the call.
The next week is a lot of small to average surf with mostly clean conditions, but nothing that'll blow your hair back. Thursday the 9th of July afternoon shows a bit of a swing, with 3.6ft from the south and a glassy surface. The energy is moderate at 282. It’s surfable, but you're not going to be telling stories about it.
Now, the real standout. We've got a run of days starting around Tuesday the 14th of July where the swell ramps up. The morning of the 15th (Wednesday) and the morning of the 16th (Thursday) are the top of the heap. The swell hits 5.6ft from the SSE with a period of 12-13 seconds. The combined energy rockets up to 871 and 932 respectively – that's strong, powerful groundswell. The wind is glassy or calm both mornings. This is excellent, clean, sizable surf for the intermediate crowd. Keep in mind that 5.6ft is a good step up; it's manageable for experienced beginners on a longboard if they're comfortable, but it'll be more fun for those with a few sessions under their belt. The 15-second plus period for the SSE swell means it'll have some punch and better shape, likely lining up well on the sandbanks here.
Friday the 17th of July is also a cracker, with the swell dropping to 4.3ft but still with a 13 second period, clean conditions, and good energy. It's a great way to cap off the run.
The big call for the standout session is the morning of Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th of July. The best combo of size, clean glass, and strong energy. It's a long way out, so keep an eye on the charts, but this one has promise written all over it. Crowds are listed as "sometimes" here, so you might have company if it's good, but don't let that put you off.
