The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our local stretch.
Alright, straight up – the next few days are a bit of a write-off for a decent paddle. We've got a real slow start here, with no real surf to speak of until midway through the weekend. The first proper chance to get wet comes around Sunday morning, the 23rd of August, at Praia Tenório. The water's sitting at a pleasant 72°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a shorty or just a spring suit.
Sunday morning looks like the pick of the early period. We're looking at a clean 4ft swell out of the SSE, with a period around 10 seconds. The wind is glassy from the SE, so the surface will be smooth as. The combined swell energy is moderate (302), and it's the only window in the first week that's labelled as "expect good surf conditions". The swell is from the south, which is bang on the optimum direction for this spot. It's a fairly consistent break, so you should get a few. Crowds are only "sometimes" a problem, so it's a solid bet for a Sunday morning session.
Now, the real meat of the forecast comes in the next week. Monday the 24th sees a jump in size, with 6ft to 7ft southerly swells, but the onshore wind and rain make it messy. The energy is strong, hitting 1187 and 1621, but the quality isn't there for a paddle. Tuesday morning the 25th is a standout for the more experienced crew. It's a glassy 6ft swell from the south, with a long 14-second period, which brings a heap of energy (1218). That's a proper groundswell. At that size and with a long period, it's going to be pushing into expert territory, especially at a beach break where it might wall up. For the more capable surfers, this is the best on offer – clean, powerful, and with no wind.
The rest of the second week holds some promise, but it's a bit more of a mixed bag. Wednesday the 26th has glassy 4ft to 4ft SSE swells, with a 13-second period and strong energy (839-843). The wind is calm or glassy, so the conditions will be clean. It's a good, solid option for a mid-week surf. The following days drop off in size, with a few marginal windows, but nothing that screams "go now".
Looking further out, the first week of September brings a new pulse. Thursday the 3rd of September has a punchy 8ft south swell, but the onshore wind and rain spoil the party. The real gem is Friday the 4th of September. The morning shows a 5ft south swell with a 12-second period, and a clean offshore breeze from the ENE. That's looking very good, with the combined energy at a strong 789. The afternoon is similar, with 6ft and clean conditions. This is a promising long-range call – a proper south groundswell with clean offshores. It's a bit far out, so keep an eye on it, but it's got the makings of a ripper.
So, to sum it up: the standouts are Sunday morning the 23rd for a fun, clean beginner-to-intermediate session, and Tuesday morning the 25th for the more experienced crew looking for power. The long-range standout is Friday the 4th of September, which could be the best of the whole window if the forecast holds.
Stay stoked, and I'll see you in the water.
