Table - best surf conditions forecast for Praia da Baleia over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Praia da Baleia over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a patchy start. The good stuff doesn’t really kick in until a few days in, but when it does, there are a couple of windows that’ll make it worth paddling out.
Sunday 12th July starts off with a small, clean 3ft SE swell, period at 12 seconds. The morning has a light offshore breeze from the NNW, making it glassy. It’s weak energy though, only 292. It’s a slow start, but you could get a few fun ones. The afternoon turns to poor conditions, so make the most of the morning.
Monday 13th is a write-off. The swell jumps to 6ft from the S with a short period of 9 seconds, and it’s cross-onshore all day. The energy is moderate (582), but it’s messy. Not worth your time.
Tuesday 14th July morning is a gem. The wind goes glassy, calm, and the swell is 5ft from the S, period 9 seconds, with moderate energy (452). The conditions are ‘good,’ and with the water temperature sitting at 69°, that’s bang on average for this time of year. The afternoon is a bit of a question mark with onshore wind, so stick to the morning.
Now, the real standout is Wednesday 15th July. The morning is an absolute beauty. The swell is 5ft from the SE, period 10 seconds, with moderate energy (552). The wind is glassy, the sky is clear, and the forecast says “very good surf conditions.” This is the pick of the first week. The break is a beach and point setup, exposed to the south, so this SE swell will wrap in nicely. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, but on a Wednesday morning with glass, you might get lucky.
Thursday 16th July morning is also solid. 5ft SE swell, period 10 seconds, glassy, clean. Good energy (438). It’s a reliable morning session.
Friday 17th July holds a small but clean 3ft SE swell, period 12 seconds. The morning has offshore wind, the afternoon is glassy. It’s a long-period groundswell, which can make the waves a bit straight at beach breaks, but Praia da Baleia is a point and beach setup, so it should handle it. Energy is down to 301, so it’s weaker but still fun.
The second week drops off significantly. From Saturday 18th July through to Tuesday 21st July, the swell drops to 2ft and 2ft, with short periods around 8 seconds. The energy is weak (below 100). It’s a flat spell, with poor conditions from Tuesday afternoon. Not much to get excited about.
Then we get a second pulse. Wednesday 22nd July morning is glassy with a 4ft SE swell, period 7 seconds. The energy is moderate (256). It’s clean, but the period is short. Good for a grovel.
But the big one to watch is Thursday 23rd July – that’s over a week away. The morning is showing a 5ft S swell with a very long period of 14 seconds, and the energy is strong at 975. The wind is offshore, the sky is clear, and conditions are expected to be “very good.” This is a groundswell, so it’ll have power and shape. It’s best for the point and reef sections here. The afternoon is glassy too, with 4ft S swell, period 13 seconds. This is the standout of the second week. It’s a long-range call, so don’t bet the farm, but it looks promising.
After that, from Friday 24th July onwards, it fades fast. The swell drops, the wind turns onshore or cross, and the energy falls to weak levels. By Sunday 26th July and Monday 27th July, it’s flat with 2ft and 1.0ft swells, and poor conditions.
Bottom line: The best window is Wednesday 15th July morning and Thursday 23rd July – the latter being the bigger, more powerful swell. Tuesday 14th morning is also a solid call. The rest of the time is small and weak, with a big gap in the middle of the second week.
Rusty out.
