The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checkin' in from the beach. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Praia da Baleia.
To be honest, the first week is a bit of a slow burner. We've got a couple of small, weak days but nothing that'll get your heart racing. The real story is building towards that second weekend. Keep your eyes peeled for Saturday the 22nd of August and beyond.
Gonna be a quiet start though. Tuesday the 18th has surfable waves, but it's pretty ordinary, the swell is weak at 4ft from the ESE with just a short 8-second period. The water temp is 70°, which is about a degree and a half warmer than normal for this time of year, so it's a touch on the warm side. Wednesday and Thursday are tiny, with knee-high dribble and barely any energy. Friday the 21st morning has a clean 3ft wave from the east with an offshore breeze, but it's still short-period and lacking any real punch.
Now, things start to get interesting from Saturday the 22nd of August. The morning is looking good with a glassy 5ft swell from the south and a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps right up (437), and it's the first time we see a "good surf conditions" comment. This is a beginner-friendly size and the glassy conditions are a big plus, so this is a standout window for a clean, easy session.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th see the swell picking up, but the wind swings onshore. Monday afternoon is pushing 7ft from the south with a long 14-second period and serious energy (2457), but that onshore wind will mess up the surface. That size is getting a bit much for learners. For experienced guys, the power is there, but the conditions aren't doing it any favours.
The real gem looks like Wednesday the 26th of August. The swell drops to a manageable 4ft from the south, but the period is still a solid 12 seconds, meaning good shape and power. And the wind? Clean offshore from the NNW. The combined energy is solid (652), and we're looking at "very good surf conditions". This is the best on offer for the groundswell crew. With that long period, it'll be better on the points and will offer some nice, clean walls.
After that, the surf tails off into small, clean conditions again, perfect for the longboard or a soft-top. The morning of Sunday the 30th of August has a glassy 2ft southerly swell with a long 11-second period and a nice 216 combined energy. A very pleasant little session.
There is one big caveat way out on the 31st of August. We're looking at a big 10ft southerly swell with a massive 2380 combined energy. But the wind is cross-onshore and the report says "marginal". At that size, it's strictly for experts, and the wonky wind will be a battle. A kite surfer might love that raw power, but for us paddle-in surfers, it's a pass.
Overall, feel the pulse on Wednesday the 26th of August for the best combination of size, power, and clean offshore wind. Saturday the 22nd of August morning is your pick if you just want some clean, small waves.
Stay salty,
Rusty
