The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, bringing you the lowdown on Praia da Baleia.
We start off a bit slow. The first real surf to talk about is on Sunday the 23rd. There’s some 5ft southerly swell, but the wind is a light SSE breeze, blowing onshore. The water’s warm at 72°, and it’s about a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate at 463. It’s surfable, but nothing to call home about.
Monday the 24th brings a big jump in size, with 8ft southerly swell, but the wind is cross-onshore from the SE at 6 mph. The period stretches to 14 seconds, bringing real groundswell energy (energy is 2346), but those winds will mess up the surface. This one is for the experienced crew only.
The first real standout is early Wednesday morning, the 26th. The swell drops to a more manageable 5ft out of the SSE, but the wind is glassy—that’s a huge positive. The period is a very long 16 seconds, so this is pure groundswell. With energy at 1543, it’s got some punch. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The point and beach setup should handle that long period okay, but the point might be the best bet.
Thursday morning the 27th is another one to mark. 6ft SSE swell, glassy conditions with a light NW wind, and a 14-second period. Energy at 1496. Again, excellent surf for experienced surfers. The offshore wind will keep it clean.
After that, it drops off. Friday the 28th has some small, glassy waves, but the swell is tiny and the period drops to 8 seconds. From Saturday the 29th through the end of the first week and into early September, it’s mostly small, weak, and messy. A gap of several days with poor conditions.
On Wednesday the 2nd of September, the swell tries to build again, hitting 7ft from the south, but it’s cross-onshore and the wind is up. Not great.
The next real highlight is Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. Glassy conditions, 6ft southerly swell with an 11-second period, and energy at 870. The forecast says very good surf conditions. This is a solid, clean swell with light offshore wind.
Saturday the 5th of September also looks good. Morning brings 5ft SSE swell with a light offshore northerly wind at 6 mph, giving clean waves. The afternoon goes glassy with a light westerly breeze. Period is 11-12 seconds, energy around 525-574. Very good conditions.
After that, it turns poor again with rain and onshore winds into the next week. The best of the whole forecast is definitely Wednesday the 26th and Thursday morning the 27th of August, with Thursday the 3rd of September as a solid long-range bet.
Rusty out.
