The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what's on the cards for Praia da Baleia over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a slow start, but there's some serious promise on the horizon for those who can wait.
Right now, we're looking at a fairly quiet spell kicking off. The first few days are pretty average, with small, weak swell. You'll see a bit of a pulse on Thursday the 16th, with a clean 4ft swell from the ESE and a period of 10 seconds. That Thursday morning is looking glassy with a light NNE wind, and the combined wave energy is solid at 504 (moderate). It's a decent enough start to the window for the beginner-friendly beach and point setup here. Water temps are sitting around 69°F, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no surprises there.
From Friday the 17th through to about Wednesday the 23rd, it gets pretty marginal. The swell drops right off, with heights hovering around 2ft to 3ft and short, weak periods of 8 seconds. The energy drops into the weak zone (down to 44 on Wednesday the 22nd). There are a few clean windows in there with offshore or glassy conditions, but with such tiny waves, it's really just a paddle and a hope. You might get a fun little knee-high wave if you're patient, but nothing to write home about. There's a definite gap of a few days here where the surf is just too small to get excited over.
Now, hold on to your boards, because things get interesting around Sunday the 26th. We start to see a new, more substantial southerly swell building. The morning of the 26th shows a 5ft SSE swell with a 10-second period and glassy conditions. That’s clean and offering a moderate energy of 417. But the real standout, the one you’re waiting for, is Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th.
Monday the 27th of July is the pick of the bunch for the first week. We’ve got a 5ft SSE groundswell, with a very long period of 11 seconds, and it's glassy – dead calm, zero wind. The combined wave energy jumps to a strong 752. This will be clean, powerful, and punchy. Best for intermediate to experienced surfers as that 5ft is getting a bit hefty for beginners.
But if you've got some experience under your belt, Tuesday the 28th of July is the absolute standout of the whole outlook. The morning shows a 6ft S swell with a crazy long 14-second period. And get this – glassy conditions again, with zero wind. The energy is a very strong 1566. This is proper, powerful groundswell. The long period means it'll really wrap into the point here, offering some beautifully shaped, set waves with long waits between them. This is an *excellent* surf for experienced surfers only, though – at nearly 7ft with that power, beginners should sit this one out. It's going to be a special morning if you're ready for it.
The energy drops off a little after Tuesday, but we still have clean, solid swell in the 5ft to 5ft range through Wednesday and into Thursday, though the winds become a bit more cross-shore. Still, it's a solid run of surf to cap off the month.
So, the verdict? Get through the next week or so of tiny waves, and you'll be rewarded with a fantastic run of clean, powerful southerly groundswell starting Sunday the 26th, peaking on Tuesday the 28th. That Tuesday morning is the one to circle on your calendar.
Rusty.
