The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Praia da Baleia over the next couple of weeks.
First thing you’ll notice is that the water’s sitting at a pretty standard 68°, which is about average for this time of year – nothing weird going on there.
The outlook starts off a bit flat, to be honest. The first few days from Saturday the 18th through to Thursday the 23rd are all about small, weak swell. We’re looking at waves around 2ft to 3ft, mostly from the ESE, with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak, under 200 (172 down to 89), so it’s surfable but very ordinary. The winds are light and offshore or cross-offshore in the mornings, which keeps things clean, but there’s just not enough push to get excited about. Friday the 24th sees a little bump in size to 5ft from the south, with clean conditions in the morning and moderate energy (292), but it’s still short period and the afternoon gets a bit messy with cross-shore wind.
Then we hit a bit of a lull into the weekend of the 25th and 26th. Swell drops back to 3ft to 4ft, and onshore winds and rain showers make it a scratchy affair. Not really worth paddling out for.
The real standout, and the one worth circling on your calendar, is Monday morning, July 27th. The swell is only 2ft, but it’s coming from the south with a long period of 13 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is glassy, dead calm from the NE, and the combined energy is a solid 280. This is going to be clean, lined-up, and perfect for the point. Because the period is long, it’ll be best at the point or reef sections, not the beach. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get there early.
The next big standout is Tuesday morning, July 28th. Glassy conditions again, with a 5ft ESE swell at a short 7-second period. The energy is strong at 383, and the calm winds will make it look smooth. A bit short period, but for the size and glass, it’ll be a fun morning.
Then we have a gap with smaller, ordinary surf until the end of the month. The real heater comes in the first week of August. Saturday morning, August 1st, brings a 3ft south swell with an 11-second period, clean offshore wind from the NE, and very strong energy (670). This is a quality setup. Then Sunday morning, August 2nd, is the absolute pick of the forecast. Glassy, no wind, with a 6ft SE swell at 10 seconds, and energy pumping at 800. That’s a solid, powerful groundswell. At 6ft, it’s getting into the territory where beginners might find it a bit much, but for anyone with some experience, it’s going to be firing. The point will handle that long-period energy beautifully.
So, to sum it up: the first week is small and ordinary. The best bets are Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th for clean, glassy waves. The true standout, though, is Sunday, August 2nd – that’s the one to plan for. Keep an eye on it, because long-range forecasts can shift, but right now it looks like a belter.
Rusty.
