The Lowdown

Alright surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Praia Grande over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – the first week is looking pretty quiet, nothing to get too excited about. There's a window of small, clean waves early on, but it's going to go flat and messy for a stretch. The real potential is waiting for us in the second week, so keep that in mind.

We kick things off on Sunday morning, July 26th. There's a small S swell pushing in at 2 feet with a very long period of 14 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (247), and with a glassy ESE breeze, conditions are going to be pristine. This is a groundswell, so the waves will have plenty of push and shape, but it's also pretty small. For the intermediate crew, this is your best bet of the whole first week. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

From Sunday afternoon right through the end of July and into the first few days of August, it gets grim. The swell drops off, the wind goes onshore or cross-shore, and we see a lot of poor surf conditions. You're looking at a solid gap of days with nothing worth paddling out for. The energy levels drop right down into the weak range (values in the 30s and 40s). It's a pretty blank run.

Now, things start to look up in the second week. The best chance we get falls on Thursday morning, August 6th. We've got a 3 feet swell from the ESE with an 8-second period, pushing moderate energy (165). The wind is offshore from the NNW at 12 mph, which is clean and makes the lines hold up nicely. This is the standout session – a proper, clean little wave that should offer some fun walls for the better surfers. It's not a huge swell, so it won't be too intimidating.

The following Saturday morning, August 8th, is also worth a mention. Another clean morning with a glassy ENE breeze and a 3 feet SSE swell (163 energy). It's a similar size to Thursday but the conditions will be just as good for a long session.

For the rest of that second week, the wind tends to get on it in the afternoons, and by Sunday the 9th, it's looking onshore and choppy again. So, if you want the best of it, hit the early sessions on the 6th and the 8th. Praia Grande is an exposed beach break, so it can get a little hectic when the wind is wrong, but when it's glassy or offshore, it's a damn good place to be.

Rusty.
