Praia Grande Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Right, let’s get into this. Rusty here, looking at the next stretch for Praia Grande.

Right out of the gate, Wednesday afternoon (September 9th) has tiny 2ft surf coming from the south, period at 10 seconds, with glassy conditions from an ESE breeze at 3 mph. The combined energy’s weak at 136. It’s surfable, but very ordinary stuff. The water’s a touch warmer than normal at 71°F, which is about 3°F above average – feels a bit bath-like for this time of year.

Thursday morning is small again - 2ft from the SSE, but that 12-second period gives it a little more push, and the NE wind keeps it cross-off and clean. Still, it’s not setting the world on fire. After that, conditions go downhill quickly Thursday afternoon with onshore southerly winds hitting 12 mph, making a mess of the 2ft swell. Friday and Saturday are a write-off – cross and onshore winds, poor conditions, lumpy and choppy.

Sunday (September 13th) morning bumps up to 5ft from the SSE, 10-second period, with moderate energy (371), but it’s crosswind with rain. It’s only marginal. Sunday afternoon gets bigger at 5ft, but forget it – onshore wind at 19 mph and heavy rain. That’s ugly.

Now here’s where we get a standout. Monday morning, September 14th. We’ve got 7ft swell from the SE, 8-second period, energy is strong (611). The wind is offshore from the NE at 6 mph, and the waves are clean. This is the best on offer in the first week. It’s a bit on the punchy side with that short period, but for an exposed beach break like Praia Grande, the offshore wind will clean it right up, and the size will be fun for intermediates. Just note, it’s a beach break, so that short-period swell might not be as lined up as a longer period would be. Monday afternoon is also good – glassy, with the swell dropping to 5ft.

After that, Tuesday and Wednesday (15th-16th) are back to marginal or poor conditions with cross-onshore breezes. There’s a messy mix through the middle of the week.

Then we get another beauty window. Friday morning, September 18th, starts with 3ft from the SSE, glassy calm from an NNE breeze – clean but small. The real gem is Friday afternoon. 6ft from the east, period 8 seconds, *glassy*. Wind is a slight air from the ENE at 3 mph. The combined energy is 589 – solid moderate. That’s a top session if you’re free. Saturday morning (19th) is also good: 3ft, glassy, clean.

Later on, Wednesday, September 23rd is a nice little run: 2-2ft from the south with periods of 13 and 12 seconds, glassy both morning and afternoon. Clean and fun for a small-wave board.

But the final, and maybe the biggest standout, is Thursday morning, September 24th. We’re looking at 6ft from the ESE, period only 7 seconds, but combined energy is strong (557), and the wind is offshore from the north at 6 mph. That’s clean, punchy, and has power. It’s over two weeks out so treat it as promising but not locked in.

Crowds at Praia Grande are often, so expect plenty of company on those good days. Over the 16-day window, there are gaps of a few days at a time with poor surf – like Saturday the 12th through Sunday the 13th, and again mid-week around the 15th-16th. But overall, there’s enough on offer to keep a surfer interested.
