The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here, giving you the lowdown in feet and knots.
So the story is the same: a slow start, a little tease mid-week, then a big wait for the main event on Monday, August 17th.
For the first few days, we’ve got ankle to knee-high dribble. The morning of Thursday the 6th into the afternoon is the first little window that’s interesting. The east swell climbs to about 3 to 4 feet with 8-second intervals, and the energy picks up. The wind goes dead calm. That’s your best bet for a fun little session in the first week, but the period is short, so it’s not going to be world-class.
The rest of that week is just small and ordinary. Swells stay around 2 to 3 feet, period is short, and energy is weak. Glassy mornings make it look pretty, but it’s a lot of work for not much ride.
Then we hit a dead zone. From Sunday the 9th through to the 12th, it’s mostly flat and poor. The 13th brings a lumpy, onshore 4-foot swell with a 6-second period. absolute mess.
Now, the one to circle on your calendar is Monday morning, the 17th of August. The forecast is for a solid 6-foot swell from the ESE with an 8-second period, and the wave energy is cranking at 395. And the wind? Glassy. That is the standout of the entire 16-day run. It’s a long way out, so don’t book the day off work just yet, but it has serious potential for a proper session at Praia Vermelha do Norte.
Expect a crowd for that one, as it can get busy sometimes.
Water temp is 72°, so a little warmer than normal for this time of year.
Keep an eye on that 17th. Rusty out.
