The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get straight into it. Honestly, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and grim around here. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds messing things up. If you’re desperate for a paddle, there’s a tiny window early on, but don’t get your hopes up for anything epic.
The first real option is at Praia de Asturias on Monday the 17th of August. It’s not much – just 4ft of short-period ESE swell with a weak energy reading of 220. The wind is light and cross-offshore in the morning, so it might be clean enough for a beginner to get a few soft ones. But it’s inconsistent, and the 8-second period means it’s not going to have any punch. Expect some small, crumbly waves for the learning crew. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.
After that Monday morning window, it just fades away. Tuesday and Wednesday are tiny, with the swell dropping to under 3ft and the energy readings falling into the weak double digits. It’s glassy on Tuesday morning which is something, but there’s just no waves to ride. This dry spell runs for the rest of that week and through the weekend. There’s a small bump on Saturday the 22nd, but the wind is cross-onshore and it’s messy, so it’s not worth your time.
The next chance we see is on Monday the 24th of August. There’s a pulse of S swell that pushes the height up to 6ft with a long 12-second period and a strong energy reading of 1827. But it’s a complete write-off. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore, and with that size and the short-period nature of the swell at the beach, it’s going to be a messy, choppy mess. That’s a day for the experts only, and even then, it’s going to be challenging. It’s over the 5ft mark, so definitely not for beginners.
That swell fades through Tuesday the 25th, and the wind goes straight onshore, so it’s still poor. We’re back to small, weak surf for the rest of that week. The best of the bunch comes on Wednesday the 26th of August. It’s small, only 3ft, but the wind goes glassy in the morning and the period is still a long 11 seconds, so there’s a bit of energy behind it. The energy reading is 172, which is weak, but those clean conditions might make it worth a look for the longboard crew. It’s still inconsistent, but if you’re keen, that’s your spot.
Thursday the 27th is similar with a glassy morning and a 3ft S swell, but it’s a touch shorter period at 10 seconds. Also an option, but nothing special. After that, the swell fades out again and the wind gets messy. That long-range promise for the start of September doesn’t materialise into anything rideable. On Monday the 31st of August, we see a glimmer – a 3ft SSE swell with a 10-second period and a clean cross-offshore wind in the morning with a moderate energy rating of 259. It’s small, but it might be the cleanest wave we’ve seen all week.
So, to be honest, there’s no real standout in this whole run. The pick of the litter is probably that Monday the 17th morning for the beginners, and maybe Wednesday the 26th if you just want a clean, small-wave glide. The bigger swell on the 24th is a total mess. We’re in a bit of a lull, but that’s how it goes sometimes. The sea will come back around.
