Canto do Moreira Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here, switching to feet and knots for the imperial crew.

First up, the outlook for Canto do Moreira. Slow start, but the second half of the window heats up. Water temp is about 70°, which is dead average for this time of year.

Right now, Thursday the 23rd, it’s flat and messy. Cross-on wind, tiny 2ft swell from the east, period 8 seconds – not worth it. Energy is weak (86). Friday the 24th morning is average, but by Friday afternoon the wind goes glassy, and the swell picks up to 5ft from the south, period 9 seconds, with moderate energy (410). That’s a clean, fun wave. Saturday the 25th is more of the same: glassy, 5ft swell from the SSE, period 9-10 seconds, energy in the 340-396 range. Consistent and clean.

Sunday the 26th morning is a standout. Glassy, clear, and a 3ft swell from the south with a very long period of 14 seconds. Energy is solid (502). That’s a proper groundswell, and at Canto do Moreira, it’ll wrap in with clean lines. The longer period means better shape but more time between sets. Paddling out is easier. Sunday afternoon the wind goes cross, so stick to the morning.

Monday the 27th morning is still glassy with a 2ft south swell, period 11 seconds, energy 215. Small but clean. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th are tiny – 2ft to 2ft – with glassy or offshore winds, but energy is low (137-188). Scratchers. Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st are poor, with cross-on winds and weak, small swell. Energy drops to 72. Not worth it.

Saturday August 1st sees a small bump to 3ft-3ft from the east, period 7-8 seconds, but glassy in the morning. Energy is moderate (165-227). Surfable but nothing special. Sunday August 2nd morning is a write-off with strong cross-on wind and choppy 3ft swell. But Sunday afternoon goes glassy again, with a 5ft swell from the SSW, short period of 6 seconds, energy 331. Clean but a bit dumpy.

Now the good stuff. Monday August 3rd morning is glassy with a 3ft south swell, long period of 12 seconds, energy 316. Clean lines. Tuesday August 4th is the real standout. Morning has calm winds, 6ft swell from the SSE, period 10 seconds, and strong energy (673). That’s a powerful, solid wave, but still OK for strong intermediates. This is the best session of the window. Tuesday afternoon is also excellent with 6ft and glassy conditions.

Wednesday August 5th gets big. The swell hits 8ft in the morning, then 10ft in the afternoon from the ESE, period 9 seconds. Experts only. The energy is massive (846-1256). If you’re not a pro, stay out.

Thursday August 6th morning drops to 7ft from the ESE, period 9 seconds, glassy, with strong energy (671). Still a big wave, but more manageable for strong intermediates. Friday August 7th morning has clean offshore winds, 7ft from the east, period 8 seconds, and very high energy (1137). This is a powerful, fast wave for experienced surfers only. The afternoon settles to 6ft, glassy, with energy 430.

Overall, the best on offer is Tuesday August 4th, with that morning session being the pick of the whole 16 days. The Sunday 26th morning is also a great session for those who like long-period groundswell. Crowds at Canto do Moreira are often an issue, so get there early on those days.
