The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the surf for the next couple of weeks. Let’s get straight into it.
First up, we’ve got a few days of small, ordinary waves to kick things off. From Tuesday the 21st through to Thursday the 23rd, it’s mostly small dribble with swell around 2ft to 2ft and short period, weak energy (67 to 91). The wind is clean at times, especially Tuesday arvo and Thursday morning with glassy conditions, but there just isn’t enough oomph to get excited about. These are beginner-friendly days, nothing more.
Then things start to pick up. Friday the 24th morning brings a jump in swell to 5ft from the south, with a period of 10 seconds and a solid energy reading of 391. The wind is glassy calm, so it’s going to be clean. This is the first real standout of the outlook. Praia da Boraceia is an exposed beach setup, and with that south swell coming in clean, it’s going to offer some fun, punchy waves. The combo of decent size and glassy conditions makes this the best morning of the first week.
Saturday the 25th keeps the good vibes rolling with 4ft SSE swell, period around 10 seconds, and energy in the 306 to 318 range. The wind stays glassy all day, so expect clean, fun waves from morning through the afternoon. This is classic, user-friendly surf.
Sunday the 26th gets a bit more challenging. The swell is smaller, around 3ft to 3ft, but the period stretches to 13 to 14 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell. The energy is still moderate to strong (382 to 472), but the wind is cross-on, so it won’t be as clean. The long period might make it a bit tricky at the beach break, but it’s still surfable.
Monday the 27th is back to clean conditions with glassy winds, but the swell drops to 2ft from the south with a long period of 12 to 13 seconds. Energy is moderate (202 to 214). It’s small but clean, a good option for a mellow session.
After a few days of small, ordinary waves from the 28th to the 30th, we get another proper pulse. Friday the 31st morning sees a bump to 5ft SSE swell, period of 6 seconds, and energy climbing to 387. The wind is glassy, so it’s a good morning. The afternoon gets bigger at 6ft, but the wind swings cross-on, making it messy.
Now, the real highlight of the whole outlook lands on Saturday the 1st of August. The morning brings 4ft swell from the south, period of 12 seconds, and strong energy of 544. The wind is glassy. This is a top-quality morning, clean, with solid groundswell lines. The afternoon stays similar in size but the wind turns onshore, so the morning is the clear winner.
Sunday the 2nd of August is another beauty. The morning has 3ft SSE swell with a 13-second period and energy of 494, with clean offshore winds from the north. The afternoon gets even better: 4ft SSE swell, a very long period of 15 seconds, and energy jumping to 726. The wind goes glassy. This is a stand-out session, especially for the point and reef setups, but at a beach break like Praia da Boraceia, watch out for those long-period waves breaking a bit too straight.
The last few days of the outlook, from the 3rd to the 5th, see a drop in quality. Swell holds around 3ft to 4ft, with periods of 12 to 13 seconds, but the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, so it’s not as clean. Still surfable, but not as special.
The water temperature is sitting at 68°F, which is about normal for this time of year. No big surprises there.
Best bets: Friday the 24th morning for the first real pulse, and Saturday the 1st of August and Sunday the 2nd of August mornings for the best combination of size, clean conditions, and strong energy. The Sunday the 2nd afternoon is a special one if you can handle the long period.
Rusty.
