The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's look at this 16-day stretch. It's a slow burner, no doubt about it. The first few days are a total write-off, so don't even bother.
The first hint of anything surfable is around Saturday the 22nd. The swell energy is starting to show, reading 108, but it's still cross-onshore and choppy. It's a "maybe" at best. Sunday the 23rd looks a lot better with a clean cross-off wind and a 5ft south swell. The energy is up to 400, and it’s starting to feel like we’re in business. Monday the 24th keeps that clean cross-off wind, with the swell holding around 5ft to 6ft and the period stretching to 11-12 seconds. The energy is cranking to 966 by the afternoon.
But the day that's got me stoked, the real standout, is Tuesday the 25th. We’ve got a solid 7ft south swell with a 14-second period – that's proper groundswell. The wind is offshore from the NE, clean as a whistle. The combined energy is a massive 1608, which tells you there's some serious grunt in the water. This is the one for the experienced surfers; it's going to be powerful. The crowds are listed as "sometimes," so you might see a few others out there, but it's not jam-packed.
The rest of the week settles down but still has some fun waves. Wednesday the 26th has a glassy morning with 4ft south swell, and Thursday the 27th sees the wind go offshore again in the afternoon, cleaning up a 3ft south swell. We even get clean conditions stretching into the first few days of September, with a 5ft SSE swell on Wednesday the 2nd with offshore winds.
So, the bottom line: the first few days are a bust. The surf starts to build over the weekend, but Tuesday the 25th is the one to lock in. That's the best on offer.
Water temps here at Laranjeiras are about average for the time of year, nothing special.
Rusty out.
