The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at the lineup coming our way for Canto do Leblon. We've got some solid action brewing, but you'll need to pick your sessions wisely because the wind is going to be a bit of a mixed bag.

Right off the bat, the water is sitting at a warm `74°F`, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thick rubber at home.

The main event kicks off on Sunday the 23rd, but honestly, it's a bit of a write-off with cross-shore and cross-onshore winds messing with the surface. The real story starts to shape up heading into Monday the 24th. We're looking at a long-period, solid groundswell from the South pushing in at `6ft` early, building to `7ft` in the afternoon with a period stretching out to 14 seconds. The energy is pumping with readings over 1200 (moderate to strong), but the wind is still onshore and sloppy with light rain. It's going to be a powerful, jumbled mess for the most part.

Now, Tuesday the 25th is where you want to be in the water. Early morning brings in some sweet relief with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the Northeast (10 mph). The swell is still a solid `7ft` from the South with that same long 14-second period. This is the standout session of the entire forecast – the cleaner conditions will really let that long-period energy wrap in properly, giving you some excellent, powerful shape for experienced surfers. It's going to be a bit of a beast, and with a combined energy of 1772, it's not for beginners. It'll be a proper battle, but the reward will be there.

The good vibes carry into Wednesday the 26th morning as well, with a light cross-shore breeze keeping things from getting too messy. The swell holds at `7ft` and the period actually jumps to a very long 16 seconds. That's proper groundswell energy (2259 combined energy). Just keep in mind that with a period like that, the waves might break a bit straight on the beach, so look for any points or river mouth banks if they're working.

Thursday the 27th morning is a total hidden gem. The wind goes completely glassy with a slight air from the NE, and the swell drops to a more manageable `6ft` with a still-healthy 14-second period. This is your chance for some truly clean, lined-up waves without the hassle. It’s a window of perfection for those who can get out there early.

After that, things start to dwindle. Friday the 28th offers clean but smaller waves (`5ft`) with a short period of 7–8 seconds. It's fun, but not the power we saw earlier. Then we hit a long flat spell from Saturday the 29th through to Tuesday the 1st of September, with swell sizes dropping below `3ft` and very weak energy. The waves are just too small and weak to be worth the paddle.

Around Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September, we see a tiny blip of energy, but it's poor. Then Friday the 4th of September offers a glimmer of hope, with a clean `5ft` swell from the South-southwest in the morning. The combined energy is 608, so it's moderate, and the light cross-offshore breeze will keep it tidy. It's a session for the longboard or a fun mid-length, but don't expect the power of the previous week.

So, if you have to pick one: Tuesday morning the 25th is your big, powerful standout for experienced crew. For the best all-round clean conditions and a slightly less intimidating wave, Thursday morning the 27th is the magic window. Keep your eyes on the horizon.

Rusty.
