The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm looking at the waves for us.
So, we're checking out Canto do Leblon. It's a beach and point break, and it breaks pretty consistently, which is always a good sign. The water's about average temp for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
The first week is a bit of a slow burn. Tuesday the 18th, we got waves around 3ft from the ESE, but with a short period of 7 seconds, it's got no power. The wind is a light cross-off, so it's clean, but it's just small and weak. Wednesday the 19th is even smaller, with waves about 2ft. Thursday morning the 20th is glassy flat with 2ft waves. Friday the 21st has a clean 3ft wave with offshore wind, but it's still small. The weekend is blown out with onshore winds.
There's a real quiet spell here. The real action starts to build late next week. On Monday the 24th, the swell starts to push in, with waves hitting 5ft from the S and a period of 12 seconds. The energy is building. This is the start of something good.
The standout window is Tuesday the 25th through Wednesday the 26th. The swell from the South peaks on Tuesday morning, with a solid 7ft face and a very long period of 14 seconds. That's a lot of power. For a point break, this long period can be a dream. The wind on Tuesday morning is a light cross-shore, which isn't perfect, but the size is there. But the real winner is Wednesday the 26th. The swell drops a bit to 4ft, but the period is still a solid 12 seconds, and the wind is gonna be offshore from the North in the morning, then light cross-off in the afternoon. That's gonna be clean, lined-up, powerful surf. That's the session to aim for. It's a bit big for beginners, but for the rest of us, it's gonna be fun.
After that, Thursday the 27th is still good with a clean 4ft S swell, and then it trickles off into the start of September with onshore junk.
So, to sum it up: you gotta be patient. The first week is a wash. The one to really get excited about is Wednesday the 26th of August. That's your best bet for a good session.
Rusty.
